2011 Dudley Hewitt Cup Goes To ...

2011 will be the OPJHL's turn to host the DHC ... one problem, the OPJHL does not exist anymore so the question is which 'league' gets to host the 2011 DHC ?

To me the 21 team Central Division/League should get the DHC because they are what is left of the OP. In the 2008/09 season they(the Central) were a division within the OP and this summer it was the 15 teams that now call themselves the "Ontario Junior A Hockey League" that have actually seperated.

Officially the OP is disolved, so the question is which league/team will host the Dudley Hewitt Cup in 2011 ? And furthermore what about 2012 ? Surely the other league(the one that does not host in 2011) will want to host the DHC.

With the SIJHL all but folding...surely, it's only a matter of time. That would leave the door open for both the OJAHL and Central teams to make it directly, and both be included in the rotation.

I suppose if the SIJHL stayed, the winner there could play the winner of the NO, and then the winner of the OJAHL play the winner of the Central, and we could go back to a series-Dudley! yay!!

Either way, I'd like the tourney held in one of the Muskoka/Central Ontario/Lake Simcoe area cities...they're teams are always competitive, have nice facilities, and quite large community support. They deserve it.

i think the division with the current league champion should get the dudley in 2011. i also have no problem with kingston being the choice. if huntsville have their new arena ready they would also be a good choice.

How about we just say it's the OHA's turn to host and anyone from either league can bid instead of getting into another thread where both sides continue to bash the other, often with arguments that don't rely on logic or fact.

Personally, I'd love to see Kingston have a shot, I think it's a beautiful facility and I think they'd put in the effort to make it a first-rate event. Then, there are quite a few organizations who will have nice new facilities in the next few years and it'll be good for hockey if all of them put forward their best foot to try to win a bid.

Definately my vote goes to Kingston and Huntsville, those teams have the best two brand new facilities. If Huntsville can host the G8 pretty sure they could host the Hockey.

Perhaps the new Dukedome. It will be a great rink and the support is guaranteed.

My whole point is both leagues will probably want their team to win the host bid. The losing league, I am sure, will want their turn and I doubt they will want to wait three years.
So lets say Kingston(or some OJAHL team) gets it, does that mean in 2014 it goes to a Central team or viseversa ?

I like Return the Redline's idea but planning would need to start now for 2011

I actually think the SIJHL will find a way to stay alive and having the winner of the SI vs winner NO in a best of 3 or 5 would be great. Each year the league host of the series would flip.

Same goes down south, OP vs Central, here you could actually let the series go back and forth. Travel may be increased a bit but not much and no worse than what SI and NO does throughout their playoffs. The winner of the regional series (NO vs SI) and (Op vs Cent) league will then meet for the Dudley in a best of 3 or 5. The Dudley would also rotate in years, one year it's the Northern region Champ, (SI or NO) the next it's the southern (OP or CENTRAL) champs turn to host.

There would be complications/uncertainty though since no one would know who was going where. It would be based on the winners. I do think this would eliminate some of the cost associated with hosting the Dudley. When the Abitibi Eskimos hosted it in iroquois falls in 07 it ran up a 105 000 price tag. in 09 It broke the Diesels to the point of folding. Not sure about Newmarket. Having to worry about one team's expenses as opposed to 3 will surely cut the cost down.

If you keep it the same, whoever the host is needs excellent finances, strong organization/volunteers, good fan support and the rink should need to hold at least a 1000 butts.

Wex, I'm fine if they decide that they're going to put both leagues in the rotation back-to-back years or even if they wait until the OHA's turn and rotate back and forth, much like many believe the OHL did for a period of time with the east and west hosting the Memorial Cup.

What I hope not to see, and it seemed to me that it started in the first post with the accusations that one particular group left and the other should host, is another "he said, she said" thread that seems to be the same as every other one lately. It's time to acknowledge the divide happen and find ways for everyone to still work together under the OHA umbrella for the best of hockey.

With a new rink, Wellington would actually be a great spot. Now I know people are going to say, there is no place to stay in Wellington for teams. However, I remember when it was in Fort Francis(sp?) teams travelled 30+ minutes to get to the rink. There are plenty of spots within reason for rooms. Belleville, Trenton are the immediate two of thought.

Fan support was never great in Kingston until the new arena. It's good to hear they are now getting fans out.

collingwood

the town knows how to run special events and was behind the blues bid

it was a missed opportunity for the game in 2008.

Dale, completely agree. Collingwood would be a perfect place for a DHC.
