Hyman named Red Wings captain

It’s bound to raise a few questions.
The Hamilton Jr. A Red Wings have named 17-year-old forward Zack Hyman team captain.

Hyman, who scored 13 goals and added 24 assists last season, is also the son of team chairman (and the guy who signs the cheques) Stu Hyman. But Red Wings president, head coach and general manager Robert Turnbull said it’s been the teen’s performance on and off the ice, not his bloodlines, that earned him the C on his sweater.

“Zack is a leader in the dressing room,” Turnbull said. “Zack has a scholarship to Princeton University. He is one of the leading scorers in exhibition. He’s done everything a coach or GM could want a player to do to lead the team and he’s got the respect of the players.”

Turnbull said some hockey experts have told the Red Wings the Toronto teen will likely get picked in the NHL draft next year.

The Red Wings’ assistant captains are defencemen Jeremy Goodwin and Justin Steevens and newcomer forward Christian Powers.

Turnbull said most of the team’s roster has been set and they’re in the process of finalizing the line combinations. He’s said he’s pleased with the way the training camp has gone so far.

“All the players are working hard, they’ve bought into the team concept,” Turnbull said. “The nice thing about this team and the players is they’re communicating with one-another … everybody’s watching the game, everybody’s talking.”

The Red Wings were slated to play their final game of the preseason at home against Oakville this past Wednesday (Sept. 2).

They are slated to spend a day with their Jr. B affiliate in Wheatfield, New York tomorrow (Saturday) before returning to the Dave Andreychuk- Mountain Arena for a full week of practice to prepare for their home opener against the Burlington Cougars next Friday (Sept. 11).

Turnbull said the squad will work on their power play and penalty killing next week.

At the Westwood Rink on Monday, Dylan Boyd scored what turned out to be the winning goal in the second period as the Red Wings beat Streetsville 5-2 in preseason action.

Noah Schwartz, Evan Haney, Austin Weih and Brooks Behling scored the other Hamilton goals.

At the Dave Andreychuk-Mountain Arena Aug. 24, the Red Wings doubled Bramalea 4-2.
