HAWKS LAND STARTING GOALIE

Posted By Ernst Kuglin - The Trentonian

Trenton Golden Hawks pulled off a blockbuster trade Friday involving six players.

In doing so, the Hawks have found their starting goalie. Alexandre Peck was described by Hawks management as a blue-chip player, someone who doesn't come around very often.

General manager Tim Clayden was on the phone last week trying to swing deals to fill out that roster.

That deal was completed Friday morning with the Victoria Grizzlies of the British Columbia Hockey League.

The Hawks are sending coveted defenceman Brad Pawlowski west in exchange for four players, plus two additional carded players, and what's referred to as undisclosed player development compensation.

Pawlowski was acquired late last season by the Port Hope Predators as compensation from the Thunder Bay Bearcats where he scored 12 goals and added 31 assists in 32-games.

Pawlowski, is a 6'3", 210-pound defenceman from Marathon, Ont. He played 38 games with the Oshawa Generals during the 2005/2006 season as a rookie, and played seven games during the 2006/2007 season.

The Hawks are getting the following players in return: Goalie Alexandre Peck (6-foot-4, 185 lbs, 18 year old from Kirkland, PQ, birthday Oct. 28/09); forward Mike Hammond (5-foot-9, 165 lbs, 19 year old from Victoria, B.C., ); forward Craig Eisenhut (5-foot-11, 190 lb 19 years-old from Kelowna, B.C., and 19-year-old Ryan Bradley, plus two future players.

Hawks management couldn't find enough to say about their new goalie.

"A player like Alexandre Peck doesn't come around very often,'' said Jason Clarke, the team's Quebec region scout. "He's a great asset for the Hawks and great for Trenton. Alexandre has been scouted by numerous Division 1 schools in the U.S.''

While Pawlowski was billed as a star defenceman for the Hawks, Clarke said the Hawks now have a giant of their own in net.

Peck had a record of 16-5 with the Grizzlies last season.

Hawks head coach Matt Muir said Trenton is receiving four quality players.

"Peck is very fast for his size and covers a lot of the net very quickly,'' said Muir. "His goals against average is also very good.''

Stats for the three forwards involved in the trade are not available.

Both Muir and Clarke said the three forwards are quality players.

Clarke said Mike Hammond "is an extremely talented forward.''

All three forwards were second and third line players for the Grizzlies.

As for Pawlowski, Clarke said the defenceman has huge potential.

"If he does the things he's capable of doing, there's no reason why Brad can't be at the Tampa Bay Lightning rookie camp next year,'' said Clarke. "This is a very good move for Brad.''

Muir said the talented defenceman needed to be with people his own age.

"If you look down our roster we don't have a lot of 20-year-olds in camp,'' said Muir. "Right now, Brad needs to be with people his own age.''

Muir added the four new players fall in line with the type of team Hawks management wants to ice.

"We want to be a team with a lot of character and heart, that works hard every game. Were getting there,'' said Muir.

The coach added the yet to be named players was another good move.

"The two prospect will add depth later in the year. Those are valuable assets when injuries and suspension crop up,'' he said.
--------------------------------------------------------------

The Hawks also added Jake Doseger, who will make his return to Trenton. As early as Aug 16 when I saw his name on the Kingston line up I commented here on the abilities that Jake possesses. IMO Jake is another positive asset for the Hawks.

You have to be impressed by Tim Clayden and his Management Teams due diligence in puting the right players on the ice in Trenton and making it a reality. The Trenton Fans can look forward to some exciting games at what i think is one of the great old school wooden beam contruction rinks in the league. If you have not made the trip to see a game in one of these great rinks do yourself a favour and make the trip to Trenton.

If you are able, wear Red on Fridays.

2009/10 Golden Hawks .... Week One Talking Points ....

The Golden Hawks believe there is more than one way to have a winning season.

One is to win a Championship.

News Flash

Only one team does that of the more than 36 teams in this part of the Province. One is to move players into the next level of play, that being the NCAA,
CIS, OHL and Pro Hockey. We do that now.

Only one team in this Province will get to do both.

The Kingston Voyageurs set the bar out here last season and we suspect will be one of the very best in the entire country again this season. We will not roll over and play dead, we will ice a team of junior committed hockey players that are good citizens, that have goals on and off the ice and that want to be here. We expect our fans to be appreciative, supportive and very, very vocal

There are 9 ways to beat the big red machine, the Voyageurs this season. Some of them are, Coaching, Communication, Commitment, Class, Character and Chemistry. The other 3 we will keep to ourselves. The time for talking will soon come to an end as we need to prepare the kids that want to be here
for Big Red Machine coming in this weekend.

Regarding the Brad Pawloski trade; "it's never easy cutting or trading a player and or a young man that you like and many of us liked having Brad Pawloski around at times " said GM/Director of Operations, Tim Clayden "Brad Pawloski is one of the better demen out here in all of Ontario at this level, on the ice and tough. We liked having him around this summer and enjoyed his humour. We had also made a promise to Brad before we signed him that we would always put his hockey career and playing wishes first and we have done so in this deal, we had to, it is an opportunity of a life time for Brad"
added Clayden; "we have a connection to Victoria as I have worked in that beautiful City for the Victoria Cougars of the Western hockey League for a couple ofseasons before they were moved to the interior and Prince George, BC and still have good hockey friends on the island. Our Quebec Scout for player Personnel, Jason Clarke also has ties to the Victoria organization"

Clarke chipped in with "The Grizzlies have promised Brad that should he play to his potential this year, his hockey career will be extended after this season into the Pros. That in itself is a fantastic opportunity that every NCAA ineligible player at this level should be given. If Brad does not deliver, we will regain his playing rights should the Grizzlies elect to move him later into this season"

The Golden Hawks GM also pointed out "the down side of a trade this big involving so many is sometimes players are shocked that they have been traded and don't want to move or report, especially when reality is having to move some 4 Provinces East and away from home, that doesn't always sit very well. Our organization gets that as I have made the red eye flight to and from that beautiful Province several times myself, it's a big commitment for every player to move and we understand that it is not an easy decision for any one player to accept or make, we get that and have prepared for it"

"The truth is this trade will take some time to have the dust settle to see where each player wants to end up as this trade has been in the works for 3 weeks now. Originally, all key players in the deal that we had spoken too had agreed to report. Sometimes once hockey agents and player advisors and other hockey experts become involved, players often change their minds, it happens all the time and this deal is no different. It takes the same amount of time or even longer to move players that choose not to report for various and often legitimate reasons, sometimes it takes another 2 to 6 weeks to keep all involved satisfied, it will all work out in due time "

"Trenton is also a beautiful community, on the water in harmony with Canada's largest Military Base and hungry for a good junior hockey team. We have ride too and only want players that want to be in our dressing room for the right reasons. This deal will take several weeks to sort it's self out and Brad Pawloski will need to be at his best in order to stick with the Grizzlies for the season. In the end, we will end up with the players that want to be here for the right reasons and the players that we want " commented the Director of Operations

On a side note, 4 year Letter player Jeremy McCarty has had some hesitation in reporting to camp this season requesting a possible trade. However, in an open discussion meeting with ownership last week, with Jeremy and his Mom both present, the good news is Jeremy has given his word to team management and ownership to give 110% to start the season as a Golden Hawk, while waiting to see how things unfold for the Golden Hawks this season.

"we understand Jeremy's concerns and request for a possible trade, he's a great leader in the dressing room and a great kid off the ice that is destined in this world for tremendous success. Jeremy can play any where he wish's throughout North America this year and next if he wants. We expect this to be his best year ever. We have asked Jeremy to keep his options open this year as his wish is to finish playing at this level this season as a 19 year
old and secure his full ride NCAA D1 scholarship. To do that, Jeremy may have to consider this season's RBC Host Championship Team, the Dauphin Kings"

The Golden Hawks have had on going trade discussions with regard to moving Jeremy for 2 weeks now with 3 teams, the Dauphin Kings, Lindsay Muskies and the OHA Junior A League Champions, Kingston Voyageurs.

"In my mind, playing for the RBC Host Team is what may be best for Jeremy this year in order to maximize his exposure and his dream to secure his D1 ride as a 19 year old. Or simply stay and help the team that he started junior hockey with some 3 years ago win a Championship. Time again will tell, Trenton Junior Hockey fans will love this kid's work ethic. That is why we made Jeremy McCarty the captain of our hockey team at the age of 17" stated the Golden Hawks Director of Operations

Have a great season everyone

I love it

I had never heard of the Kingston Voyageurs referred to as THE BIG RED MACHINE before.

I like it.

And I will tell what I also like about this Trenton story. That they know the standard is the Kingston Voyageurs against which they must measure themselves if they want to compete with the best the league has to offer.

As my good friend Csspostal has often said, "winning a championship is great but the mark of a true champion is doing it again."
