I thought it might be a good idea to kick off this thread for a potential discourse on this age-old argument that winners can be bought.
Is it good? Is it the only way? Is it fair to the rest of league? Is it simply an ego thing for deep-pocketed owners? Is it good for long suffering fans of a team suddenly thrust into the spotlight because of a goodwill owner?
Here is the Dukester post in the thread titled "Ontario showcase."

Even the perennial middle of the pack Kingston Vees were nothing until the deep, deep pockets of Rosen entered the picture. Now why would a team suddenly laden with $$ suddenly rise to the top? Hmm.

Is it good? ... It is fine. Not the way I would want to do it, but may be the way today.
Is it the only way? ... Hell no !
Is it fair to the rest of league? ... It is within the rules, the rest of the league should not matter.
Is it simply an ego thing for deep-pocketed owners? ... In many if not all I will say yes.
Is it good for long suffering fans of a team suddenly thrust into the spotlight because of a goodwill owner? ... Where are you going with this one Wayne ? Why not ? Think of it as a return for their investment.

I think it is obvious where Wayne was going with this, Wex. He was putting his own personal slant on the debate, by suggesting that the people who SHOULD matter, the fans, are the ultimate beneficiaries of the winning situation. I will also include the players in the group of people who SHOULD matter.
Do I believe that players should be paid in Jr. A Hockey? No, I do not. However, if ways are found to reward the players without circumventing or breaking the rules, I do not have a problem with that necessarily. But again, it has to be within the rules of the league. If a team in the CCHL breaks the more stringent standards and rules laid out by that league, but another team in the OJAHL does the same thing and it is not breaking the rules within that league, then I have no problem with the OJAHL team doing it but a big problem with the CCHL team doing it.
As for the comment about why Kingston won when the new "deep pocketed" owners came in, I would suggest this. Just because a wealthy owner who is willing to spend money on a team comes in, and then a team starts winning, that does not necessary imply that players are being paid. There are many, many ways to spend money on a team and turn them into a winner without paying players. Team dinners, highest quality equipment, upgrading the dressing room, more practice ice time, larger training, scouting, and medical staff, all of these are ways to promote a winning atmosphere that translates onto the ice. Are the players on Kingston being paid, as was insinuated? I don't know. What I do know is that that cannot be the only conclusion one jumps to.
I do not automatically jump to the conclusion that illegal intent was what was suggested.
I assumed that Dukester and Wayne were both talking about buying a player from an other team, as in buying the player's services, not paying the player.

i,m just really curious why Corbin Crwaford ended up in k-town in the off season. being a Belleville boy and an x-Duke where by the way he left welly on good terms , did not end up back there .The only reason i see is either rules of x-ohl,ers or shillings being tossed about, keep in mind i,am not insinuating anything whatsoever, just CURIOUS.
"Well put. Even the perennial middle of the pack Kingston Vees were nothing until the deep, deep pockets of Rosen entered the picture. Now why would a team suddenly laden with $$ suddenly rise to the top? Hmm."
Gregg Rosen didn't just buy the team last year. He has owned the team for three seasons now and was the major sponsor keeping the team alive for many years prior to that. You make it sound like Rosen just came in last year, and dropped a boat load of money. Rosen and his deep, deep pockets were still there when the Vees were considered this "middle of the road" team.

Corbin did play in Kingston with the Frontenacs for the past few seasons and whose to say he is not registered in school in the Kingston area or that he grew fond of the city and decided he wanted to continue playing hockey there. There are always more sides to the story than the typical negative ones.

with kingston they are nothing but a class act organization.
i have been to many jr-a rinks and talked to many people in this league about things happening and kingston is never talked about in a negative manner.
the reasons players want to go there is good coaching, good program, great facilities, great dressing rooms, post secondary opportunities, OHL town.
and then of course winning last year helps too
players that come back from the OHL want to go to a qaulity organization and that is why they want to play for the vees
The Villanova Knights are a much improved team but I prefer to
think they did their homework made iprovements and took a giant
step forward.
Some one could say something belittling but its usually from "small
people"

Now is this because Villanova is in the Classic, not apart of the 'C' ?
Or does this apply to every team and everyone who make 'belittling' remarks ?
