In the midst of an impressive run in the Ontario Jr. A Hockey League, the Trenton Golden Hawks are getting a new head coach.

Matt Muir submitted a letter of resignation yesterday, citing changes in his work commitments at Rogers Communications in downtown Toronto.

That means rookie assistant coach and former Trenton Sting enforcer Mat Goody will take over the reins of the Hawks, who have now won 10 of their past 12 games and are making a run up the league standings.

Unfortunately, due to very recent changes within my place of employment, I can no longer commit to spending the appropriate amount of time required to continue my role with the Golden Hawks, Muir wrote. I would like to make it very clear that the Golden Hawks are a class act organization. Even through this recent change in my employment, they were accommodating and willing to try and work with and around my schedule moving forward.

However, the time commitment and travel between downtown Toronto and Trenton, makes it impossible for me to fulfill my agreed to responsibilities with the team, Muir wrote. Working with (Hawks GM) Tim Clayden has always been a pleasure. I wish the Golden Hawks the best of luck in the future. Success is imminent with such a top notch organization and hockey community as Trenton.

Clayden and Goody are actually a perfect 7-0-0 as coaching partners that past few weeks.

We had always hoped Mat Goody could step in one day as our head coach here and this situation merely speeds up up the process, Clayden said. Frankly, Mat and I have had to work closely together on the bench the past few weeks and I have no hesitation in giving more responsibility to him as a bench boss.

In terms of a head coach, we will quietly and cautiously look for someone to come in and coach this hockey team with Mat. Until than, Mat and and I will continue to work our bench together.

Our biggest concern is our dressing room, we have great chemistry this year and it really is a lot of fun to be around our players. We will not jeopardize that in any way shape or form, Clayden said. We like our kids and our dressing room, its fun to be a part of this hockey club and we intend to keep it that way.

does this mean Goody will be the only coach our do you all think Tim will hire someone else to be an assistant what do you all think ?

I presume that Goody is only interim until they can locate someone with some experience. Is that your take?

Weren't there rumours swirling around here about Tom McCarthy, formerly of Huntsville, at one point?

Wow. I don't even know what to say.

How is Goody going to handle this while driving back and forth from ottawa to work?

How long will it take before they hire a new head coach? I will place my bet on two weeks. Who's with me?

the hawks are on a good roll now and with their good team chemistry they need to be careful adding a new coach. i agree that they need someone with more experience but not someone that wants to change everything.

There is no rush to replace Matt Muir.
Mat Goody and GM Tim Clayden are now a perfect 8-0-0 as bench partners so far this season. They are blessed with excellent team chemistry. The players are really tight with this bunch, the best since the Port Hope Predators won the East six years ago, according to Clayden and owner Rod Finney.
Clayden has admitted he doesn't want to be on the bench forever, but with the way things are going right now they can take their time and find the right fit to co-coach with Goody.
You have to start some place, and Goody is a smart guy who has the players' ear right now. People can't forget this guy did play six years of minor pro and has been exposed to a high level of coaching and has a very experienced guy in Clayden to help him out.
Besides, anyone who pays attention knows the best coaches are former goalies, defencemen and muckers and grinders because they understand team defence better than former offensive stars, who usually had to be introduced to their goaltenders at the end of every game.

Why try and fix something that isn't broken?

Trenton is doing great!

No need to rush for a new coach right now...The team is doing awesome, fans are slowly starting to show up so life is good! And I just saved 15% on my car insurance with Geico, what more do you want?

But if they ever offer the head coach job to Craven Moorehead and I, we'll take it!

Have a great day, make sure you buy a Poppy!

There shouldn't be a rush to replace Spencer Finney. He is a solid goalie who positions himself well, doesn't make the spectacular looking saves, because he doesn't have to. Develop a defensive system in front of him and he will take the team far. Look do you think Sirman would have done as well last year without the Kingston defense in front of him.
Offense wins games, defense wins championships.

What a difference a year makes. I had heard that last year the team did not have much faith in Spencer and because of that did not put in full effort when he was in net. This year he is undefeated and their is no way the same attitude exists with an undefeated record at this point in the season.

Hats off to the kid and to the team in front of him.

And you will remember all the flack the youngster took in Port Hope when his father was a big owner of the Preds.

I am glad he's doing well.

Totally slipped my mind to mention that.

Thanks Wayne.
