Back to back Championships... truly special teams' status

The New York Yankees won another championship beating the Philadelphia Phillies in 6 games. The Phils were bidding for back to back championships but it did not come this year.

Ask the Detroit Red Wings of last year in the NHL how hard it is to repeat. Pittsburgh beat them in the finals.

For the Yankees of baseball, it was their 1st championship since the year 2000. But for all those Yankee haters out there, which team has won more back to back championships in major league baseball than any other?

It has been done a mere 11 times in MLB history. And the Yankees have done it an incredible 8 times of those 11. Oakland A's, Philly and the Braves each did it once.

Locally, the Greater Kingston Senior Soccer Association's AS Roma team won back to back in the fall of both 2008 and the fall of 2009. In spite of having rewitten the record books for League,Playoff and Lanzo Cup championship seasons, it has been done just once in this league called the GKSSA.

And, since the inception of the tier OPJHL, only 2 teams have ever won back to back Buckland trophy championships. The Milton Merchants did it in the spring of 1996/97 and again in 1997/98 seasons.

The St. Michael's Buzzers did it with back to back wins in 2004/05 and 2005/06.

So the point? Well, no matter what team sport it is in any league, it is tough to win back to back once much less a number of times.

The Kingston Voyageurs have a chance, this year, to repeat and become only the 3rd OJHL team ever to accomplish the feat. And if that should happen, they would have a special place in the history books of this league.

Coming back to the Yankees, like them or not, they truly are a remarkable team that has a record unlikly ever to be beaten in MLB ball. imagine it. 8 back to back championships over the years.

So teams who manage to achieve that kind of success are truly worthy of special mention.

As a matter of interest, any forum contributors got any more who have won back to back championships in their sport and league to add?

I would love to see some more. List them right here along with their respective years of back to back wins.

I know the NBA's Boston Celtics and the NHL's Montreal Canadiens have had tremendous teams. They are likely to show up on this list.

Anyone?

How about the Wexford Raiders long run in the old Metro Toronto Jr. A League in the early '90's. Though I didn't follow this league till '95, I know they just had to be monsters in that league considering the powerhouse teams Caledon and Aurora had back then. To win it 4 straight yrs.is quite an accomplishment.

Wayne;
"It has been done a mere 11 times in MLB history. And the Yankees have done it an incredible 8 times of those 11. Oakland A's, Philly and the Braves each did it once."

The Philadelphia Phillies have never won back to back WS. Their only two wins were 1980 and 2008.
The Atlanta Braves also have never won the WS back to back. They won once as Atlanta in 1995, once as Milwaukee in 1957 and once as Boston in 1914.

However here are a few you missed ... including one glaring error !

TORONTO BLUE JAYS 1992, 1993 !

Chicago Cubs 1907, 1908(last time they won)
Philadelphia A's 1910, 1911 / 1929, 1930
Boston Red Sox 1915, 1916
New York Giants 1921, 1922(before moving out west to San Fran.)
Cincinnati Reds 1975, 1976

Those announcers steered me in the wrong direction. When they said 11 times only for back to back, the Yankees did do it 8 times. But the others, I did not catch and only guessed (albeit not correctly).

My son really steered me straight on the Blue Jays saying they were one of them winning back to backs.I do remember those wonderful years.

But the others? Thanks for looking them up and straightening it out, Wexdog . Once again, I knew I could count on my friend to set the record straight.

Robert C.Edwards had it right when he said;
"Never exaggerate your faults. Your friends will attend to that."

Now, back to back to back champions.

Anymore folks.

I will stay tuned.

As soon as I read your message I went ballistic. lol
How could he forget the Jays !

I remember the Reds in '75, '76, and because there was so much talk about the Cubs not winning since 1908, 100 years, I knew about the Cubs going back to back ... then going into hibernation.
I had heard the Red Sox had done it, but did not know how long ago.
