I noticed my ends were getting very dry and splitting a little more than usual.
So now I clip the front and sides to the back (friendly hair clip of course) and braid the rest and tie the end with a silky scrunchy.
The sides of my hair aren't as long as the back and therefore were always being handled more by swinging back and forth over my shoulders. My ends don't like this, so I pinned everything up so the ends wouldn't constantly rub against anything.
