just to confirm our telephone conversation this afternoon
having visited the site this morning, our view is that the island has little or no current conservation interest. particularly as it has recently been dug up by pipe layers with the result that the ground has been disturbed and weeds encouraged at the expense of more interesting plants
we did find one orchid, but on the 'mainland' just before the bridge
however it is a site with potential. with the marshes on one side and the remarkably clear water surrounding it. someone with a mission and tender loving care could over time transform it into something worth while
but it would be starting from scratch. and it would be a lot of work involving tree planting and probably reeds in the ditches so that it is difficult to see who would take it on.
it is quite a big site, relatively speaking, and if more allotments are needed [which did not seem to be the case] one could contemplate half of the island as a mini nature reserve and half allottments
but at the end of the day, like everything else, it needs an enthusiast to get it off the ground.
