Wards Garage

by

How on earth did this get planning permission, the construction is cheap the building is oversized and the windows and door are UPVC and very ugly. This is very determental to the High street. I may have been in the minority but I like the querky garage. Even if it had to go at least the cottages could be rendered with wooden window and doors to make them in keeping.

Can future develops of this nature be stopped?

Wards Garage

The Society completely agrees with you. It is not an architecturtal masterpeiece. Indeed we are worried about all new architecture in the Town. The trouble is the planners seem not to care. So long as it is not offensive they will pass it. WE are considering what to do about the problem and to encourage better architecture.

Wards Garage

by Sally Irvine

Apart from agreeing about the look and lack of style of this development, I wonder at access to the garages behind, and more importantly egress onto the High Street. The approach seems very narrow. Moreover who will want to live in rooms which every passerby can look into? It compares very unfavourably with the rather sensitive development at Reades, almost opposite.

What are the planners doing?

Motor Caravans on Sea Wall

by Colin Sydenham

What is the policy?
It is said there's a website which cracks up the Aldeburgh sea wall as a wonderful welcoming site for motor-caravaners. Shouldn't the policy include identifying this site, and making our own contributions to it?

Cycling on Sea Front

by Colin Sydenham

Cycling along Crag Path has been going on time out of mind. In April it was reported to ATC (see Gazette 25.8.08 p 6 item 1) that one Jason Skilton (of SCC) had found an order prohibiting vehicles on Crag Path. 'The order dates from 1983 and is rather complex, but does include cycles and tricycles as vehicles'.
I found Skilton's name in the telephone book, and rang the number. I was told (a) that he was no longer at that address, (b) that he had changed his department at SCC, and (c) that a message would be passed, and he would ring me. He didn't.
Can anyone cast any light on this person, or the alleged Order of 1983 (which I should be very interested to inspect)?

Wheelie Bins

by

I am horrified by the prospect of three wheelie bins per property in the centre of Aldeburgh. It begs the question where are they going to live! Numerous properties on Crag Path, High Street, etc. have little or no front gardens. Even those properties with gardens, having three wheelie bins will have a monumental visual impact. Will people be so keen to take photographs of the Aldeburgh conservation area when it is proliferated with wheelie bins! It is also strange that wheelie bins can be introduced into a conservation area considering what these areas are trying to achieve.

Aldeburgh has a number of particular issues. Even where property owners have the ability to take the wheelie bins to the back of the property, how will this be acheived when people are second home owners and not there on the day of the collection. The wheelie bins may stay out the front for serveral weeks, also will rented holiday properties have their bins put away and brought back? Also I use to have a brown wheelie bin but had to get rid of it as it was used by visitors to put their (non green) rubbish in.

The argument posed for them is an environmental one (i.e.they will encourage recycling and reduce landfill) however, what about the impact upon the Aldeburgh townscape which is also an important environmental consideration. In Southwold where wheelie bins have been introduced it is my understanding that a number of householders have 'dumped' their recycling bins as they don't have room for them (this is both a waste of money and defeats the recycling arguments). Door-to-door recycling can be achieved without wheelie bins, many London boroughs provide small recycling boxes (in addition to black bags) which can be stored indoors or even if left outside can be neatly hidden behind a small front wall. Plus recycling in Aldeburgh could also be encouraged by other simple moves like having the ability to recycle a wider range of paper and cardboard at the Fort Green Recycling area.

I realise that this is a controversial issue but some areas have fought and won the introduction of wheelie bins, I would be interested to discuss an action plan if other residents share my views.

Many thanks for reading my article

Kind regards

Matthew

Aldeburgh is being diminished by poor Council led design decisions

by

Dear Chair,

As I am one of those typical time starved Londoners with a second home in Aldeburgh, please forgive me for the brevity of this note. Although a second homer, my family does actually manage to spend about 1/3 of the year in Aldeburgh. We have had our house (at 23 Crag Path) for just over 8 years now and I wanted to write to someone with an interest - and hopefully some influence - about the deterioration of design in the town as a result of Council actions over the last couple of years.

1. The recent concrete paving of the High Street does no credit to the overall aesthetic experience. The High Street has much character and deserves a rather more elegant solution than poured concrete which looks cheap; was this issue ever discussed with the Society?
2. The new developments on the High Street (the former Reade building and the former petrol station) are second rate pieces of architectural pastiche. This is the kind of architecture that is aimed at ‘fitting in’ but ends up being bland and characterless. It worries me enormously that we might end up with yet another poor building when the current Elizabeth Court is sold and demolished; then our High Street will really have lost much of its character. Incidentally, I am not one who merely craves the maintenance of the status quo; it is perfectly possible to introduce modern buildings in a historic setting. The art is for them to be very well designed and for the planners to hold the line against cheap materials. The Reade building, former petrol station and Elizabeth Court are all significant structures and to lose them to poor design is a real tragedy for Aldeburgh and one from which we will all suffer in the years to come.
3. There has been graffiti on building walls and installations (e.g. phone boxes) which should have been removed within weeks – as we who suffer regular graffiti abuse in London know, the only way to stop it from spreading is to clear it up quickly. And yet, the Council has allowed these horrible visual marks to just sit there.
4. The reinstatement of the shelter next to the Brudenell hotel is a real shocker; it looks truly awful. Why on earth does it have bollards in front of it which are so unsightly? Also, could the Council not have tried to put in just a little bit of design flair in the materials used?
5. Asphalting the walk way on Crag Path may be cheap and quick, but as we could see from the recent stretch from the boat pond onwards, it looks horrible. By contrast, the walking path behind the allotments towards the Kings field show that stamped and bonded gravel is a far more elegant and pleasing solution; was this ever considered for our walking paths along the sea?
6. And finally, there are the Scallops which continue to disfigure what was once the most beautiful, clear and uninterrupted sweep of seascape I have come across in the UK. I know this is a personal view, but frankly set against the concerns expressed above it merely forms another example of municipal design decisions which have no regard for the long-term consequences on the built environment. The Scallops should be moved in town where they would do less visual damage.

I could go on; every so many months a new Council-led design intervention sets the clock back for what was once a delightful town.

I hope you won’t mind me sending you my list of grievances in this undiluted form, but as you can probably tell, my concerns are borne out of a genuine frustration that a place I love is slowly being diminished by the poor quality of care from those whose task it is to look after our built environment. The results are deplorable.

Is there anything more you could suggest I do to air these issues? Will your society be able to champion these concerns in the future and if not, who can? How can I get involved in helping you and others ensure that our town doesn’t lose out further?

With best wishes,

Wheelie Bins and Parking

by

Your leaflet asked what members are worried about.

I am concerned about SCDC's recent circular letter about recycling which will involve all households having three differently coloured wheeled bins. I concur with the need to recycle our waste but where are all these bins to be kept and what effect will they have on the appearance of the town?

Presumably ground floor and upstairs flats will each have three bins and it is far from clear how the visual impact will be addressed. Is the Society considering this matter?

I am also concerned about parking in the town and the empty spaces in the parking meter areas which are leading to congestion elsewhere.

Tony Bailey

Re Wheelie Bins etc

by Aldeburgh Society

Thank you for this. We are indeed concerned about the recycling bins and our amenities committee is looking into this including the possibility of shared bins in the town.

On parking we agree with you about the non use of paid for parking and so does the town council. We are awaiting the results of a survey being conducted by the Aldeburgh Business Association before recommending a way forward. Some people would like to see parking charged for in the High St and free at Fort Green and Oakley Square. Others of course think this would be a dreadful idea.

Thanks again fro your input which I will post on our discussion board.

The Island

Subject: the island

just to confirm our telephone conversation this afternoon

having visited the site this morning, our view is that the island has little or no current conservation interest. particularly as it has recently been dug up by pipe layers with the result that the ground has been disturbed and weeds encouraged at the expense of more interesting plants

we did find one orchid, but on the 'mainland' just before the bridge

however it is a site with potential. with the marshes on one side and the remarkably clear water surrounding it. someone with a mission and tender loving care could over time transform it into something worth while

but it would be starting from scratch. and it would be a lot of work involving tree planting and probably reeds in the ditches so that it is difficult to see who would take it on.

it is quite a big site, relatively speaking, and if more allotments are needed [which did not seem to be the case] one could contemplate half of the island as a mini nature reserve and half allottments

but at the end of the day, like everything else, it needs an enthusiast to get it off the ground.

hope these comments are helpful

Dennis Peel Manifesto posted by the Society

by Aldeburgh Society

Dear Resident

As you are aware there is to be another Town Council election. This was bought about by yet another hard working councillor’s resignation. Again this was down to the councillor concerned not being able to work within the current regime. This makes two resignations for the same reason within the last few months. We now hear that another councillor who has done a great deal of important work for the town has resigned as Chair of the committee.

I, as you probably know, have now put my name forward for election on to the Town Council on two occasions and I intend once again to stand for election on 4th May 2006.

I came very close to being elected in the last two elections and am still as keen as ever to represent the residents of Aldeburgh on the town Council.

I can claim to have instigated the last two elections. I make no apologies for this; I do not believe it is in the best interest of Aldeburgh residents for Councillors to be co-opted on to the Town Council.

It should be the choice of you, as a resident of Aldeburgh to decide who you wish to represent you, not just a select number of the current Council.

Jimmy Robinson Manifesto as posted by the Society

by Aldeburgh Society

Jimmy Robinson

1973 was the year I moved down to Aldeburgh. In that year I also helped start Leiston and District Rugby Club and joined their Committee; sadly the club no longer exists. Being a keen sportsman and family man, I am delighted to see facilities at Kings Field and Kemps Field improving. Also, with the new Community and Sports Centre.

Most of my life has seen me keenly connected with boats and the river. I have been on various Committees at the Yacht Club and the River generally; also my love of boats has seen me involved in the Aldeburgh Lifeboat for 10 years as a “Deputy Launching Authority” and Committee member.

I was Chairman of The Aldeburgh Emergency Scheme for three years. It having been disbanded for some time now, I am very pleased to see it started up again by Kevin Webster and I would like to help him as much as possible, especially as we are at threat from the sea now more than ever.
As you can see I enjoy working on Committees and believe that I can work for the town through the Council. As you may know I stood for election last time and came second to Kevin by a considerable number of votes. But I did manage to get twice as many votes as my next opposition, whom I hope I can beat again this time around!

Both my children attended The Aldeburgh Playgroup and then the Aldeburgh Sea Scouts, whilst being at school at Snape and Leiston. One works at the Boatyard and the other is a carpenter and worked for a local building firm before he started travelling. They are both young and would love to live around here, but, without living at home, cannot afford to do so. Naturally I am very interested in affordable housing within Aldeburgh (one reason would be to get them out of our hair and keep us sane!).

We support the local shops, pubs and eating houses in Aldeburgh.

If you would like to ring me to find out more about me and my thoughts, please contact me on 453774.

CCTV Cost Sharing

by

An issue with the propose CCTV installation is its cost put at circa £17,500. Given that we hear that Leiston are considering installing several CCTVs (their problems being greater than ours and extending the year round) and that the purpose of ours is, as I understand it, primarily to monitor and discourage rowdy behaviour along Crag Path in the summer, would it not make sense to share the cost of one installation for use in Aldeburgh in the summer and at Leiston for the remainder of the year?

CCTV - Views of the Society

by Aldeburgh Society

The follwing was sent to the Town Council expressing the Society's views.
______________________________________
To: aldeburghtc@moothall1.fsnet.co.uk
Cc: a.graham-enock@netcom.co.uk
Subject: CCTV Should we or shouldn't we

I am writing to tell you of the Aldeburgh Society's views on CCTV in Aldeburgh.

Broadly speaking we do feel it would be of use in preventing and solving minor offences committed in the town, particularly in the summer months.

We therefore support the idea of mobile cameras, but if cost is an issue, which it is likely to be, we would suggest that the cameras and cost could be shared with a neighbouring town which has a year round problem (eg Leiston) and only deployed in Aldeburgh during the peak summer months when most of this nuisance crime takes place.

Shelter

The shelter at the Fort Green end of Crag Path is one of several ugly structures in Aldeburgh, which have no claim to being "traditional", "quaint", charming", olde-worlde" or whatever designation is given to rubbish in general.
Possible improvements may include its

demolition; then possible replacement -- for which we would have to pay.
or repair and refurbishment for which we would also have to pay
or sale, lease, rent to a commercial undertaking which might provide a service or other amenity to the Town's advantage.
No doubt these and other suggestions have long been considered by the Society.
My own opinion is that a commercial concern may be the best option because costs would be borne by that company, not the ratepayers.

Shelter Policy

by

Our policy for the shelter is as below. Please let us have your views.

SHELTER FORT GREEN

1. The Aldeburgh Society is strongly in favour of renovating and preserving the site. How to do this is the problem given that SCDC, who own the site or the Town Council who may take it over, do not have funds available to carry out the work even if they wished to do so.

2. We would be concerned that any solution for the shelter must involve its maintenance on a very regular basis.

3. We believe that there may be one or two interested parties who might take a lease on the shelter for possible commercial use. We would prefer that this didn't happen but if there is no other way to restore the site, then the Aldeburgh Society, in principle, would support the idea provided that an area was retained for public seating and the public lavatories remained - this is essential. If these could be guaranteed, the introduction of a commercial element could prove beneficial given that the area would then be cleaned and occupied during the day.

4. Given the strong feelings in the Town, the Aldeburgh Society would be prepared to consider launching a public appeal, either on its own or with other bodies, to assist in preserving the public seating element of the Shelter provided there was a proper plan for its development and maintenance.

'Fishermen's' huts

As those huts fall out of use or become vacant or are offered for sale, they should be removed together with all the rusting equipment and other debris that litters the beach.
The ratepayers would probably have to pay, but their beach would then look more like a beach.

Policy Fishermen's Huts

by

The Society Policy is as below. Please let us have your views.

POLICY FISHERMENS HUTS

1. The huts are an important part of the Aldeburgh beach scene and we would like to see them continue.
2. Currently there are about 14 huts and we would like at least 5 huts to be there in perpetuity, but these need to be maintained in good condition.
3. The huts are there for the fishermen of Aldeburgh to carry out their trade and this must continue to be their primary purpose.
4. We are against the huts being used for leisure purposes e.g. as beach huts or a place to hold leisure gatherings or events.
5. We would be happy for the SCDC to grant leases on a longer term than 1 year if that facilitated the fishermen investing in the upkeep and maintenance of their huts.
6. We would be happy for the fishermen to sell local fish other than that they had caught from the beach, if that assisted in the commercial viability. No other commercial activity should be permitted.
7. If the huts are not being used as described above then their owners should be asked to remove them from the beach.
8. If the action above results in the possibility of fewer than 5 huts remaining then we would consider the possibility of the commercial use of the huts being extended possibly to include further activity relating to fishing or maybe local crafts.

Fairfield Road Post Office

by On Behalf of Peg Davis

Below is a transcript of a letter to the Aldeburgh Society from Peg Davies

Whilst I am concerned about the matter raised in your leaflet I feel that the imminent closure of the Post Office in Fairfield Road is the more pressing just now. About 85% of the population live north of the roundabout many of them elderly and the PO in Fairfield Road is a lifeline. It is impossible for many to walk to the High St and could the PO there cope with many extra customers anyway? May I suggest that before it is too late the Society makes strong representation to the Regional Office asking for the service to be continued. Several venues have been suggested.
I would like this matter to be treated as URGENT.

Post Office

by Aldeburgh Society Chairman

I quite agree with you that there is a need to have a Post Office facility to the north of the roundabout and the Aldeburgh Society has already started to take action. I believe that John Richardson, one of our committee members ahs already spoken with you about this and also the reaction he has received from both the owners of Fairfield Rd stores and other businesses in the area of the roundabout.

We shall certainly put our full weight behind this as it is vital that the area north of the roundabout is serviced by a postal facility. I will keep you informed of any progress we make.

Brown Bins

by

Hello,

We have all been issued with Brown bins for the disposal of garden refuse, and these are emptied on a two weekly basis, so far so good. One can always see that these bins have been emptied, by the way in which the bins are returned to the collection position, in my case the bin was collected and thrown over the fence on it's return, and being disabled it was difficult to return it to it's original place. I have as a consequence of this , now stopped using this service. If I was burglar I could easily identify the "Holiday homes" by the bins still outside of the properties for days after the collection date.

Sorry to have to sound so negative on this, is my first contact after sending off my application for membership, I hope to be more cheerful and objective in the future.

Good luck with your endeavours,

A.H.Burnett.

Littter etc

by

Hello there,

I am heading the Green Committee at the Brudenell Hotel in Aldeburgh and have concerns about environmental issues as well as litter. I have noticed that the beach especially near the marshes is covered in rubbish, in particular rubbish from fishing nets which are entangled in the litter. I feel this is dangerous to the wildlife around, e.g., birds and is not particularly attractive either, especially for a beautiful tourist resort like our village. I also have concerns that local domestic recyclable rubbish is picked up by the Council but that local businesses (that have more recyclable rubbish) have difficulty and more expense getting that disposed of. Are issues such as these discussed at your society meetings?

I’d love to hear back from you about these issues.

Thanking you in advance.

The first phase of the centre (external make-good) was completed in the autumn on time and on budget.
