At first I thought you were writing a poem, but to reply to your '... then comply with the policies.' statement.

.o0(remembering back to when Fry's first opened in Greenville, TX)

Bought a CD-R from Fry's. At the time of purchase, the CD-R was not marked with a previously opened sticker. It was not hard to tell that it had be opened before when you notice that screw heads are scratched up and there is no anti-static wrap on the CD-R and the documentation and the driver CD are all missing their wrappers. On top of all of this, there was no software for burning a CD (in this case, it was suppose to contain Adaptec's Easy CD Creator, said so on the Box).
I did comply with their return policies and brought the CD-R back the next day. I was denied a return because there was no software ... couldn't even swap the CD-R, so, Basically, I was stuck with either purchasing an additional $45 dollars worth of software or to simply use my CD-R as a CD.

Most people will comply with the return policies, as long as Fry's complies with them also.
