Fry's receiving a check receives the actual funds in 7 or so days. The same thing occurs with Credit Cards. If cashiers hate checks, then do they not also hate Credit Cards? The processing time on cc's is shorter, but if a credit card is used a day or two before the period ending the commission calculations, then there would not have been anytime for the money to be received by Fry's, therefore no commission paid.
I do remember someone stating that Fry's cashiers would take their time on ringing a customer out if they saw a large order sitting in line in hopes of getting that customer. This means that if a cashier has to hurry up to get the 'Big Order', then the check process would slow them down. If a check verification company was in use at Fry's then the cashiers would not become impatient with a person using a check (whether the impatience show's or not is a different question, but I would imaging the cashiers grow tired of having to run to a phone every time a check is presented) and since the checks are guaranteed then a commission could be issued immediately rather than waiting for funds to appear. This would make the cashier happy and the customer happy and make the store more efficient.
