Usually I triple check when I'm programming the VCR, but somehow I still didn't get last night's show. I do apologize. If anybody wants to post a summary, please feel free to do so.
Now that Sandra has more of the devastating potion, she's out to get Valentina somewhere to eat so she can put her plan to work. When she convinces Valentina to have lunch with her, Valentina innocently goes to the restroom only to to give Sandra the chance she was looking for.
Sandra put a dropperful of potion in Valentina's drink and just to make sure it would work, she dumps almost the whole bottle in. Now remember, the witch told her that she would only need a dropperful to drive her crazy, so by putting almost the entire bottle Valentina is surely to die.
Andres was surprised to see Luis and his firefighters at the almacenes. Apprently there was a small fire and the fire department had to come out, but not before LUis made his feelings about going there to the comentante-who basically told him that its his job and needs to go. Andres came face to face with him and asked him to come to his office when he finishes that he needs to clarify something with him.
Luis reluctantly goes to see Andres but doesn't really let him talk telling him that Victoria will no longer return to work and it was a decision that he supports. He also reminded him that he and Victoria are the only ones who can make decisions regarding their life and he should stay out of it. Andres tried to coment but Luis cut him short and left.
Valentina, meanwhile when trying to leave the restaurant faints when she gets behind the wheel. Excuse me, but as wobbly as she was walking don't you think atleast he valet would have stopped her from getting behind the wheel??
Shakira did her number and when she was walking out with Tony and the owner they were kidding around and she didn't see Charipas behind a curtain listening. He took everything she said out of context thinking she had both of them as lovers instead of what they really are-her friends. He also heard some patrons there talking aobut her and how beautiful and sexy she was and that just fed his imagination. He needs to go talk to her and get off his high horse.
Victoria gets a visit from Ines and she of course keeps asking her if marrying Luis is really what she wants. I love her answer--that she loves Luis with all her mind and soul and wouldn't have it any other way. Things happen for a reason, and the only thing she would want from her past is her father. How sweet. but they still don't know what happened to Sergio, he just left the hotel and nobody has heard from him.
Mauricio, meantime is looking to get the hell out of Mexico because he thinks he is in grave danger. he got together with his "woman" and asks her for money telling her the truth as to why he has to leave, but she denies giving him any money. So he's stuck, for now atleast.
Alma got the shock of her life--SHE'S PREGNANT!! What is her father going to say? What is Roberto going to say? How did this happen? I think I know-how about you? Roberto totally took advantage of her and now she has gotten herself in a doozee.
e-mail address from the forum, but the mail bounced. She did a great job. You should go and read some of the old forum comments that go along with the summaries, too, Phyllis.
you don't want to spoil yourself, by starting at the beginning and working up to where we are, though.
That was a real nice bunch of folks. I got introduced to Telenovelas Internet because of that forum and Vivo Por Elena, which was going at the same time. But Desencuentro was the first novela I watched, and I only caught the last two weeks of it. So you can guess I was happy when it came around again.
I am so sorry you are sick! Please take care and get well. Drink hot tea and veg out with a blankie in front of the computer. Also, they say there are some good novelas on Telemundo right now, since you don't get Galavision. People say "Xica" is good.
Help!,
I was going to have my grandparents in Texas tape "La Mentira" for me since I do not have Galavision where I live, but at the last minute, they are unable to do it. I was wondering if anyone who has the station would be available to tape the entire thing for me, since I have heard it is really great and because I saw very little of the beginning and middle when it aired on UNI last year.
If anyone can make GOOD tapes of this GREAT story, please let me know ASAP and I will try to get back to him or her just as quickly. I would pay him or her back to the last centavo and would be very appreciative.
Thanks,
Melanie

I'm kind of confused so could someone explain something to me?
by
Okay now, I don't have Galavision but I heard about this novela so I decided to find out more about it. As I was reading the info I noticed
Alma Muriel plays Valentina who's suppose to be pregnant and married to this other girl's boyfriend or ex fiance. And now I'm guessing her character is young? Well, I find that very strange because in Nunca te Olvidare she plays a mother of a 25-30 year old guy. Have I mistaken her for another person? So how old is she anyway then? Or this novela's really old? Can someone clear it up a little because I'm kind of confused. Thanks!
You've got Alma Muriel pegged right. She's in her 40's in this novela, too. She's married to lead or should I say co-lead male character (there are two lead male characters). Her husband's character is Andres Rivera, played by Juan Ferrara, and unfortunately he is in love with another woman. The other woman is the lead female character, Victoria San Roman.
Andres used to be in love with Valentina when the show first started, but she has had a complete personality change since their 15-year old son died three years ago (they say). She blamed Andres for the son's death, because he gave the boy ("David") a motorcycle against Valentina's wishes, and the kid went out and killed himself on it, apparently.
Ok, now. Valentina is slowly losing her mind, or rather more quickly lately, and she thinks that having another child will patch her and Andres back together. She's not pregnant, and she knows it, but she wants Andres to think she is just long enough to make it a reality. In other words, she thinks he will stay with her out of sympathy and continue marriage relations, and eventually she will get pregnant.
And about Andres. He's out of luck, because Victoria San Roman is engaged to the other male lead, Luis Torres, the firefighter. (Ernesto Laguardia).
Valentina goes to Andres, who's sitting and crying on David's bed, and comforts him. Don't worry, you can see David, too, like I do, if you just calm down. Right now I'm very tired; I think I'll go to bed. She leaves and Andres can't believe what he's just seen and heard.
Maricarmen is getting ready to leave Julia's, but first she tells Julia and Victoria how much she admires Andres and how generous he is. He backs an organization to help street kids, but he doesn't want anybody to know! She leaves and Victoria tut-tuts to Julia about Andres incredible arrogant behavior. Imagine, he's telling me he loves me at the same time he's getting his wife pregnant! Thanks a lot. That guy is so nauseating, Nana!
Maru's at the beauty salon getting a haircut from Alma. Maru wants to be beautiful for Victoria's wedding, and Alma's boss tells her that soon Alma will be getting married, too! Cut to Roberto's soon-to-be inlaws' house, and they are putting him through the wringer for taking a transfer out of the city. Nena backs him up, though, explaining he'll be working closely with the state governor, and that she would follow Roberto to the end of the world. Her parents feel a little bit better about it and discuss buying a house out there. Roberto doesn't object very strenuously, and when he graciously offers to sell his apartment in the city, the mother talks him into keeping both a country house and the city apartment. Nice deal, Roberto. We can see the wheels turning in his head.
It's late at night when Sandra bangs on the medicine woman's door, and the woman is surprised, but lets her in. Sandra is desperate to buy some more of the loco juice after Jose Joaquin broke the first bottle, and the woman sees this a fine opportunity to jack up the price. Well, I can't just cook some more up like a batch of enchiladas, you know. That stuff has rare ingredients in it! Sandra keeps stacking the big bills on the table until the woman is satisfied and pulls another vial of the vile stuff out of an apothecary chest drawer.
At home the next morning, Andres is calling Dr. Reyes to tell him the latest, but Alvaro is out of town, in Durango. He just tells Andres to stay closeby Valentina. Meanwhile at Laura's, Beatriz has the table loaded down with bread and cold cuts, making stacks of sandwiches. Turns out the vecinos have all planned a picnic in the woods for the day. Suddenly there's a knock at the door, and it's Queta, who has an urgent call from Dr. Reyes in Durango. He wants Laura to go check on Valentina, since he can't. Back at the Rivera's, Valentina's up bright and early and looks nice and normal in a yellow suit and acts normal. Andres tells her he called Dr. Reyes to come over anyway. She apoligizes to Andres for her excesses of the night before and blames it on her "condition." Andres seems confused. When Valentina's out of sight, she runs to her suite and calls Dr. Reyes and abruptly tells him not to come.
Luis and Victoria go to church and while there, decide they like it so much they want to get married there. They go to make the arrangements. When they get back to Julia's, she and Lolita are also packing a picnic from a loaded dining table. Victoria and Luis are really excited to tell them they got a church for the wedding, but Luis gets a bit disappointed when Victoria lets herself get dragged into a conversation about the food first before they can tell them.
At Abel's, Pan Dulce is feeding him another brown meal and goading him into getting more money. (These two seem always to have brown, nondescript food and drink.) A few moments later we see Abel calling from a pay phone in a kids' park somewhere. He wants to talk to Esteban but Mauricio answers and recognizes the voice from the tape. Abel hangs up abruptly.
Over at Alma's, Rosario would really like to go to the picnic, but that dumb husband of hers wants his servant around to wait on him hand and foot and prevents her going. Rosario's upset and Alma's angry. That Manuel is such a bully. All the rest of the vecinos are going to the country in a van that Rufino is bringing, and when they get there, we see it's a nice, woodsy forest park. Benny and Samuel and his family are there, too. It's a happy day, with kids running around, folks barbecuing and laughing and talking under a ramada with a big picnic table loaded with goodies. There's a sweet little kissing scene between Victoria and Luis. Never mind the pesky dialog; the closeups are good for admirers of the two principles.
Laura can't go to the picnic, though, because she has to check on Valentina. When she gets there, Valentina greets her friendly and reiterates she wants her secret kept so she can make it a reality. Later on Dr. Reyes has made it back from Durango and is just starting to spill the beans to Andres when Laura breaks in and interrupts them. She wants to keep Valentina's secret to keep the woman calm, I suppose, and distracts Andres with the story about her actually being a nurse and colleague of Dr. Reyes. Andres thinks it was a good idea. He doesn't know when Valentina might try to do away with herself again, and if things continue the way they have, they're going to have to commit her.
Back at the picnic, there's a cute scene where Rufino gets quite excited objecting to Toni's tepid characterization of his romance with Julia. "Interested" in her?!? What kind of word is that! But the big payoff in this scene is between Beatriz and Benny. First, they are gathering sticks for a fire, when Benny starts worrying about a spark igniting a blaze, and Beatriz teases him about his earnest dedication. Then she asks, You really like being a firefighter, don't you? He does. He adores it! Quite coyly, next Beatriz asks the leading question, Do you like being a firefighter more than anything else in the world? Benny is devouring her face with his eyes when he nervously but definitely asserts that lately, he's found something he likes more. You! he says. Beatriz grins from ear to ear and giggles like the girl she still is. That was certainly something she wanted to hear.
Then later, when everyone is eating dinner, Maru teases Benny about whether he and Beatriz are a couple, and wouldn't Beatriz like a firefighter for a boyfriend? Hoots and hollers all around, and Benny looks a little shy and nervous. When Beatriz insists to everyone that they are just friends, Benny looks disappointed. But she continues, saying that For her part, she wouldn't mind at all having a firefighter for a boyfriend! And Benny looks really happy and hopeful. More and more hoots and hollers. Then Maru starts working on Lolita needing a boyfriend now, and she puts her order in for a firefighter, too. Laughs and hollers.
Back at the Riveras's, Dr. Reyes talks privately and frankly with Valentina, leveling with her. The only reason I didn't tell Andres the truth was because of Laura. I was on the point of committing you. Valentina begs him to give her some time. Downstairs in the office, Andres wants Laura's address, and she tells him that she lives in the same complex as Victoria, but that Valentina doesn't know it.
Roberto brings Nena to his bachelor pad, and she frankly tells him she's not comfortable there. I'm not like the other women you've brought here, she says. He avows she's the first one, and she just blows him off. No, I don't believe that, she says, and wants to go home. He tries to put the moves on her, but she acts like he's lost his mind. Why are you kissing me like that -- I don't like it! Whoah. (I think they are trying to set up some plausible reason for keeping Alma around. Cold wife, warm mistress.)
Back at Alma's, old Manuel brings in a load of goodies to nosh and drink while he watches his football game. He claps his hands (really) for Rosario to fix the stuff. Alma comes in and sits at the dining table, and when Rosario pulls a big ham or something like that out of the grocery bag, Alma draws back from it. She says the fat smell makes her NAUSEOUS! In melodramas, in situations like Alma's, "nauseous" is a code word for PREGNANT. You watch. Coming right after the scene with Roberto and his fiance, they have to be making a point. Plus they already had Victoria use the word "nauseous" talking about Andres, and in this show I've noticed they often have a theme-word of the day. I think this is it.
The picnic is over and everyone's getting ready to leave. I guess the vecinos came separately from the firefighters, because Beatriz and Benny are saying goodbye. He wants to come by her place that evening, and she's saying it will be late, but doesn't exactly say no. Instead she kisses him on the cheek saying goodbye, and stuns the poor fellow. He is so happy. Samuel comes up and the somewhat dazed Benny says, She likes me! Samuel answers, DUH, what did you think?!
At Esteban's, Abel calls once more, and this time Esteban picks up, really agitated to be called again. Mauricio's on the kitchen extension looking a little green around the gills, listening to this conversation.
Chiripas (Raul) has apparently been unable to withstand his morbid curiosity about Elena and goes to the club to watch her dance. He looks frightened and uncomfortable at what he sees, and what's more is in danger of taking a drink of alcohol again. (He's a recovered alcoholic.) The last thing we see of him, he's sitting at the bar looking fearfully at a double tequila he's ordered. Don't do it, Raul!
At Luis's, he has all the windows and doors open, and when Maru comes up and asks, he tells her it's to get rid of and protect them from the paint fumes. He's sitting at the table polishing the silver that goes on his uniform, and Maru repeats from rote a motto of the firefighters. You're going to be the best female firefighter in the world! he tells her. Lidia comes up and mentions what a Queretaro friend told her about Sergio's inheritance, and this reminds Luis that Sergio was so sad about his uncle's death.
Mauricio brings Esteban some tea and crumpets in the living and opens the ball about the phone call with the guy from the cassette. Esteban gets really angry and demands to know who told him about the cassette?! Did Sergio tell you about that and the murder of his uncle? If so, you could be in real danger! Mauricio claims he was too drunk to remember his conversation with Sergio. Esteban says that's just great, because Sergio has been "eliminated." Now Mauricio is shaking and frightened. "Eliminated!" Esteban says, by the "organization." And now we have to think of ourselves, protect ourselves, he continues. Sergio's effects have to be picked up from the hotel, and YOU are going to do it. Mauricio thinks he can't do it, but when Esteban starts polishing his automatic pistol, Mauricio becomes subdued. Esteban slaps Sergio's hotel key into Mauricio's hand and says he will wait for him in the car, and make sure nobody sees you! Our living is in the balance, here. Roll Televisa logo, music up and tune in Tuesday morning.

That must have been some treat for you, being Ernestito's #1 fan and all! How are you enjoying the second go-round of Desencuentro? Thanks for posting the chat log....
Matias is running off to the studio after a quick bite of breakfast. First he kisses Jovita goodbye, and she mentions that Sara just disappeared from Esteban's. Jovita's going over to see what Elena learned at the AIDS hospice. Meanwhile, Ines is on the horn to Victoria, and they both wonder what in the world has happened to Sergio. They can't raise him at his hotel.
Back over at Elena's, Toni is there, and Jovita has been chatting a moment when she realizes she has to run to Televisa for an extras shoot. After she leaves, Elena despairs to Toni about not being the sort for love, but Toni tells her she's wrong. There's somebody she knows who's interested in her. Segue to the club, where poor Constantin sits alone, grouching at the help, and pining away, thinking of his cute Elena in her dance costume and crying on his shoulder.
Over at the Rivera's, Andres is coming home from Chiripas's after sleeping on his sofa. When he gets upstairs, he starts undressing (tosses a wad of American money, it looks like, on the valet), and Valentina follows him in. She begins to kiss him, and it looks for a moment like he's enjoying it, but he stops himself and walks away. Valentina gets very upset, insisting to know why he rejects her like this! Andres won't discuss it, and she accuses him of having a lover. And that lover is Victoria San Roman! She runs out of the bedroom and into David's room, crying and pleading for him to appear, but he won't.
At his hotel, Mauricio hasn't been able to raise Sergio on the phone either. The desk clerk tells him everybody's trying to find him, and he's got a pile of messages. Mauricio decides to check out, and when he's walking out the front door, encounters Esteban in his car. Esteban wants to pick him up and take him back home to talk. Mauricio doesn't want to go at first, but gives in. He asks Esteban if he's seen Sergio and tells him he can't find him. Esteban acts like he didn't even know Sergio was in town. Meanwhile in the hotel parking deck, the attendants think Sergio's red car belongs to someone who's gone on vacation.
Over at Esteban's, they just get there when someone comes up in the elevator. Mauricio hides behind a door and listens as Victoria comes in and speaks earnestly with her godfather about being in her wedding. He's to give her away, in place of her father, and she tells him she loves him very much. Esteban for his part is all sweetness and light to her, the creep. Mauricio is getting an earful, and when Victoria leaves, he questions Esteban about his true feelings. Of course, I really care about her! All that stuff I did was because I was ordered to by Andres. Andres is the cause of it all. Mauricio expects that Esteban could have ignored the orders, but Esteban makes out like that would be impossible. There's no lengths Andres wouldn't go to!
Over at Televisa, Jovita accosts Maria Rubia about an audition for Toni. Maria is fairly horrified when Jovita reminds her of a vampire film they once made together and denies any knowledge of it. But Maria's son is directing a novela, and she might get Toni an audition for it.
Julia is just coming down the sidewalk toward the vecinidad when suddenly Andres gets out of his car and wants to talk to her about his interest in Victoria. Julia's pretty upset with him, figuring he's up to no good. He says he's offended, and Julia thinks this takes nerve. Victoria is a decent girl, and a rich guy like you can find plenty of women who aren't decent to fool around with! Leave my girl alone. You're a married man! Andres just claims that this fact makes no difference to the heart and gets back in his car and drives away. Julia's left standing on the sidewalk in a huff. Both Rufino and Luis come up and see she's upset, and Julia fills Luis in a little bit, including that she's over at Esteban's right now. Luis is sick and tired of Andres bothering Victoria and wants to talk to her about it, but when he calls she's already left.
Back at Esteban's, Victoria's just left, and Mauricio is impressed with Esteban's tenderness towards Victoria. He's tending to believe that all the problems and villany are Andres' fault. Esteban insists, You do believe me, don't you? Meanwhile, downstairs Victoria is waiting for a taxi when Andres pulls up, and I guess, gone there to talk to Esteban. Boy, what luck! Andres heads straight for Victoria, grabs her and plants a big, fat kiss right on her mouth before she can stop him. But she does haul off and wallop him for it, thank goodness. Let go of me! You have no right to do that! He says, My feelings give me the right! You have to hear me out! Victoria yells at him that she doesn't care about his feelings! Your money doesn't give you any rights. Don't touch me again! You understand?!?
When Victoria gets home, Luis meets her as she's exiting the taxi. She's in tears because of what Andres did, and goes directly to hug Luis and be hugged. Luis is so worried! They go in and sit on Julia's sofa, and he tries to discover the problem; but Victoria lies to him about it. She just says seeing Esteban reminded her of her dad and made her sad. He has little choice but to believe. (Tsk, tsk, tsk, Victoria. Don't like to see her lying to my guy.)
Esteban is tired of talking about Andres and who did what and why and has just retired to the bedroom, I assume, when Andres comes up in the elevator. So, Mauricio goes to the door before Esteban can get there. Andres thinks he's seen Mauricio before, and while Esteban introduces Mauricio as the son of old friends, Andres figures it out. He saw him dancing with Victoria at the foundation ball. Mauricio smiles at the memory, avowing she was the most beautiful girl there! Andres obviously agrees, and Esteban can relax, since Andres probably assumes Mauricio is heterosexual. But since Esteban has company, Andres decides to leave. Afterward, Mauricio prods Esteban about not looking too fearful of the big, bad wolf. Esteban changes the subject, complaining about Mauricio leaving his stuff around. This brings up the topic of Esteban's infamous distaste for disorder, and this leads to it turning out that, after Sara saw the mess Mauricio made in the office, Esteban had to can her. Eventually the two of them patch it up and the adventure with the cassette is forgotten. Mauricio does ask about the missing rug, however, and Esteban makes up a lie about it being cleaned.
At the vecinidad, in a total change of subject, Benny is running around with a loaded paint brush, not watching where he's going, when suddenly he collides with Beatriz on the way to the laundry room. Benny is becoming totally enamored of Beatriz. He tries to clean her off, apologizing profusely, but this is more than Beatriz wants, and she jumps back. But she does let him talk her into going out with him that evening. He makes her laugh, declaring they can do whatever she wants: go to the movies, eat out or -- discover the world! Benny's really excited.
Julia holds a little buffet for the guys who did the painting and some other neighbors, and she and Rufino set up the new/old grammophone and 78's. Luis and Victoria tease the two so much about being lovebirds and dancing together that Julia cracks one of the old records over Luis's head. Everybody's laughing, but there's a slight pall over the scene, because Julia is still upset about being accosted by Andres. After a while, everyone but Julia and Victoria leave. Julia explains what happened on the sidewalk, and Victoria explains in return what happened in front of Esteban's building. They're both disgusted, and Victoria does not want Luis to get wind of this and worry for no good reason. You know it's a lie anyway. The guy never had an honest feeling in his life! Then still later, Maricarmen comes in just to visit and have a cup of coffee with Victoria, and she brings the happy news that Mr. Rivera's wife is pregnant again! I hope they will be very happy. (I swear, I couldn't be sure about the look on Victoria's face, but I honestly thought it was disappointment. Argh!)
And finally, I'm afraid Valentina has gone over the edge now. After her disappointment that morning with Andres, she ran out of the house and chased around the grounds desperately calling and crying for David, who won't answer her. Finally, she thinks she sees him in the pond, but he disappears when she reaches into the water. Poor Valentina. When Andres comes home that evening, Valentina is still in quite a state, and he follows her upstairs calling to her. She's still crying David's name and runs to his room and slams the door. Valentina's hysterical, and when Andres finally unlocks the door, she's focussed on a spot she says is David, and she's very upset because he won't talk to her anymore! Andres is upset, too, and tries to reason with her, insisting David is dead, that they saw his tomb! The room is empty, except for us! But she doesn't hear, and I believe Andres started to cry. His face was tightening for it when he sat down on David's bed and put his head in his hands. Tune in tomorrow!
Elena and Toni stay at the AIDS hospice and talk to Jacqueline Andere, but Matias has to go -- meet Jovita? Jovita's gone to Esteban's to look for Sara, I assume, but she's not there. Jovita talks to the concierge, but he can't tell her much and just leaves a message in case Sara shows up. As she's leaving, we notice Sergio's red car pull up across the street, and he gets out. Jovita recognizes him, but he doesn't know her, and they don't speak.
Sergio's more intent on getting in to see Esteban, though, and presently Esteban pulls up in his car and gets out. Sergio still looks pretty scruffy (no shave), and greets Esteban perfunctorily. He surprises Esteban, wanting to talk privately in his condo.
Back at the hospice, Elena is enthralled and moved by the stories Jacqueline has to tell about "Ser Humanas." It's one of the best facilities outside of the U.S. and Brazil. They provide a place for those who can't afford to incur the horrendous costs associated with AIDS, and they provide a place where they can live with respect, since AIDS sufferers are often shunned. What's more, people don't realize how many, many babies with AIDS there are that need caring for. This part especially makes Elena cry.
Up in Esteban's condo, Sergio is on edge. Esteban's exhibited a bad opinion of Sergio since he first dropped his penniless girlfriend, Victoria, and doesn't waste time alluding to Sergio's cowardice. Or pointing out Fernando's avaricious shortcomings. Sergio admits his cowardice and points out he changed his ways, but he's very curious to know whether Fernando's greed was unpardonable enough to make Esteban want to kill him! Esteban starts laughing, like this is a crazy question.
Over at Julia's meanwhile, Queta takes Victoria aside to tell her what she thinks is a secret -- that her old boyfriend wanted her so urgently to call him. She gives Victoria the number. At the dining table, Julia's telling Lidia how her own mother was Victoria's mother's nanny and how in turn she became Victoria's nanny. She remembers how beautiful Victoria's mother looked at her wedding and muses how Victoria will also look lovely.
At Dr. Reyes, Laura is meeting with him. He tells her that Andres came to see him about the pregnancy and asked a thousand questions, but that he kept mum about it for now. Laura thinks
he'd be a lot more upset if he knew it was a lie and that they should continue to go along with it.
Sergio insists he's not being outrageous. His uncle didn't die accidentally -- he was murdered! Esteban tries hard to discredit him and get him to leave, accusing him of being drunk. Sergio's getting really hot and yelling at him, and Esteban yells back that he's crazy! He's not putting up with this and threatens to call the police. Sergio doesn't stop him, but insists on some answers first. I'm not leaving until you explain! I'm not leaving! Esteban calmly puts down the phone and walks to his office. Sitting at his desk with his back to the door, we see he's screwing the silencer onto his automatic pistol! Sergio follows him in, and Esteban turns and shows him the gun. Naturally, Sergio is taken aback. So you're going to kill me, too, eh? Esteban says he gave him no choice. So, have a seat, and first I'll tell you what you came for. Some woozy, menacing theme music is playing, with a definite tick-tock beat to it. Sergio tries to run out of the apartment but the only exit is the elevator, and it won't open.
Sergio turns back into the living room, and Esteban follows, gun in hand. Sergio does want to confirm the truth, has guessed it already, and braces Esteban with it. You killed my uncle because he was going to start an investigation into the ruin of Alfredo San Roman! Esteban agrees, adding that he was going to focus on Quintana Enterprises, and Esteban couldn't have that. Sergio points out Quintana was who bought the San Roman home, and you are actually running it. Esteban laughs evilly, declaring that's right. I ordered the death of your father, but Andres Rivera had nothing to do with it. I am the sole ownership of Quintana! Sergio says, and you ruined Alfredo San Roman, too. Esteban laughs some more. Ah, yes, the plump, little pigeon. He was so easy to pluck. And I managed to blame his death on Andres, too! Ha, ha ha. Hey, guess what? I could blame YOUR death on him! His reputation for ruthlessness has served me well.
Sergio decides he's going to leave, swearing to Esteban he's going to turn him in. You won't get far with this. And I'm just going to walk out of here, because you're a coward. You've never done any of your dirty work yourself, never to anybody's face. So Sergio starts walking, and for a moment it looks like he might be right; but then suddenly Esteban turns and fires into Sergio's back. THWACK! The shot spins Sergio around, and Esteban shoots him twice more in the chest. Flowers of red blood are already blossoming on his shirt before he hits the floor. Sergio's not dead yet, though, and Esteban goes calmly over and sits backward in a dining chair, staring at him on the floor. I think Sergio is still conscious. He seems to be focussing on Esteban. Then the camera shot switches to Sergio's view, looking up into Esteban's face, and Esteban has the pistol pointed directly into the camera, i.e., into our eyes. He says sarcastically, That's right, you see. I can't face anybody myself (another blast -- Sergio jerks, and blood spurts out his mouth); I'm a coward and can't do my own dirty work (another blast); Yes, you see, I'm never going to get far with this. Ha, ha, ha. You're the one not getting far, you idiot. (Blast!) And after this last shot, the light goes out of Sergio's eyes, and he's dead! I feel so sorry for Sergio, but I don't know what he expected. He didn't show much sense going there to argue with someone he suspected was a damned murderer. Esteban thinks the same thing apparently, and his eulogy to Sergio goes, "Ah, kids! They always forget that curiosity kills the cat!" (Harp music plays -- really.) Great scene.
Later on, getting down to business, Esteban's having quite a time rolling the body up in a rug. It's probably the rug Sergio fell down on, and now that it's got blood on it, it wouldn't be any good anyway. He digs the cash out of Sergio's wallet and finds his car keys. This latter ticks him off, because it reminds him now he's got to get rid of the stupid car, too. One more problem!
For something completely different, over at Valentina's, she's running barefoot on the lawn, playing hide-and-seek by herself; but Laura looks disapprovingly on, knowing David's there, too. Laura comes up to her, and Valentina's happy to see her. She trusts Laura, to a point. She wants to know where she went (when Laura was at Dr. Reyes). Laura lies and says she went home, and Valentina apologizes for being suspicious. She needs a friend now. Later when Valentina goes to Dr. Reyes office, she kind of blows him off, and I think she might be getting tired of hearing him tell her stuff she doesn't like.
In Sandra's office, Jose Joaquin yells at her for failing to tell him Valentina was pregnant. But she doesn't care, since they're on the outs, remember? Taken aback, he does finally remember. He tries to apologize and shake on being a team again, but Sandra's had it with him. Their goals are different. He wants money, she wants Valentina destroyed. And she's got just the thing to do it, too! Sandra pulls out of her purse the vial from the medicine woman. This will make her completely crazy! Jose Joaquin doesn't want Valentina hurt. That would be killing the golden goose, and who knows, maybe he actually has a few tender feelings somewhere. Plus, he's in charge of the foundation funds now and is on easy street as long as Valentina's around. Jose Joaquin tries to grab the vial, the two wrestle with it, and Sandra screams as it hits the floor. You idiot! Oh, never mind! I can get more. But Jose Joaquin warns her not to do anything to ruin his game with Valentina.
In a weird move, Andres instructs his driver to take him by the fire station. Sure enough, Luis is waiting at the bus stop to go home, and Andres has the car halted. He just rolls down the window and stares at Luis, who stares at him back. The whole thing just served to make Luis unnerved. I don't get it, and neither did he. When he gets to the vecinidad, he goes to Victoria's and greets her with a hug, looking disconcerted. She notices, but shrugs it off when he denies any problem and then just wants to snuggle up. Lidia and Julia come in and they all talk about how careful Victoria's being with her wedding expenses. Victoria doesn't seem to mind at all that she has to, though, and accepts it as a matter of course. Luis should believe her and not feel bad, in my opinion. He takes her to a restaurant for dinner and Victoria calls Sergio's room from a pay phone there, but can't get him. She's concerned but thinks he might have gone back to Queretaro. This reminds her she wants Ines as the madrina de lazo for the wedding, but Luis's not hot on this idea at all.
At home at Laura's, she's scramling eggs when Beatriz comes in and says, by the way, I saw Abel and Esteban sitting at a table in the store cafeteria the other day. They appeared to be arguing and angry. Laura's laughing at the image of these two opposites having anything to do with each other and can't picture what was going on.
It's night and dark outside Esteban's condo building. He sneaks out to try to get into Sergio's car. He has such a problem starting it that it alerts the local cops, and they pull up with full lights and siren to check on him. He manages to get it started and get rid of them, but it was the last thing he wanted happening. Esteban moves the car into the basement parking deck of the building.
Sandra is over at Valentina's, listening to Valentina call Aurora at home to find out what has happened to Andres. He's very late, but Aurora has nothing to tell her. Sandra does all she can to make Valentina worry. Then we see Andres has gone over to talk to Raul at his trailer. He's really feeling low and exhausted with everything that's happened. He falls asleep on the sofa there, and Raul thinks to call Valentina and reassure her. Valentina reveals this development to Sandra with satisfaction, but Sandra poo-poo's this, too, claiming all guys stick together and that Raul's probably covering for Andres and Victoria. She's so mean.
In a short scene, of which we will no doubt see more tomorrow, Luis has rooked Benny and Samuel into painting his apartment. Benny doesn't look too confident and warns him he's no expert. Samuel makes some joke about "new wife -- new paint."
Esteban wrestles with 20 pounds of rug rolled around 160 pounds of dead Sergio, trying to get it out of the basement elevator stop. He has a run-in with the concierge, but gives him a big tip before the guy notices anything, and the guy goes off happy. Funny, while Esteban's getting rid of the concierge, the rug and body, still stuck in the elevator, take a ride to the seventh floor and back, making Esteban nervous enough to pull out his pistol upon it's re-arrival. Lucky nobody decided to ride back down with it. Esteban dumps the body into Sergio's car trunk and takes off for parts unknown. Next time we see him, he's levering the bundle over the side of a pit at a construction site. Is this the business complex in Queretaro? In the daylight next day, we see several workers dumping cement from a truck into the pit. It must be part of a building foundation they're pouring. The workers can't see the body, because there's a big plywood form separating them from it. Boy, how convenient for Esteban! I was thinking that criminals like him must notice useful details like that when they're driving around town. You never know when a secluded pit might come in handy! Well, I would certainly tune in tomorrow!
Over at Alma's, they're at the dinner table, and Manuel is insisting Alma get a wedding date out of Roberto. He's enthusing about the big wedding Roberto's going to throw for them. Then the vecinos will see just exactly who they've been living with! Manuel gets a bit of a shock when Rosario fills him in about wedding protocol; i.e., that the bride's father pays. He wants Alma to ask Roberto to pay anyway, but she's not having that. Go get a loan! He notes that the bank on the corner has low rates, but I don't think Manuel's credit is very good.
Sergio's already in his jammies in his hotel room, reading the paper and ready to go to bed, when he gets an urgent phone call from Mauricio. Come over to my hotel right away! Mauricio sounds really drunk again.
Valentina is in David's room, to get some more advice, but she's very anxious. Sure enough, David's really upset she's lied to his dad. He even yells at her about lying to everybody. You're not pregnant! You're not expecting a child, Mom! She weakly admits she's not. But it's the only way to hold onto Andres, she whines. I'm not, but he thinks I am. As she's leaving she tells David not to worry, she'll always love him best.
Esteban lets himself into his office. He looks tired and sits down on the sofa, removing his toupee, all the while remembering the whoppers he told Andres and Victoria about each other. He starts to smile and then laugh. Ah, Andres and Victoria, what a couple of dopes! he says. Suddenly his cell phone rings, and he checks his pockets for it. He finds it, but there's nobody on the other end, and he disgustedly hangs up; but in his jacket side pocket was Abel's tape. Esteban takes the tape out and looks at it, saying This is what caused Mauricio to leave! and tosses the tape angrily to the other end of the sofa. (Ooh, watch out, Abel!)
Abel comes into a restaurant and sits down with Encarna, who's already at a table. She wants to know about the money. He's got it and looks happy. I haven't counted it, but it's a lot! Enough to get far away from here. Pan Dulce agrees, it's a lot, but what's happened to your ambition? It's not going to last you forever. You should get all you can while the getting is good! Abel says, Are you kidding? That could get me killed! But Encarna wants to help him, and he's looking thoughtful. She's dying to know the patron's name, since she's already seen him. What's his name, what's his name?!?
And in a clever segue to the next scene, Mauricio in his hotel room answers, "His name is Esteban Aguirre!" to Sergio. Sergio is really upset with Mauricio because he's drunk again and thinks he's not making any sense at all. What's Victoria's godfather got to do with anything? He threatens to leave, and Mauricio relents and alludes to Esteban's relationship with him. He's my friend and protector. You can see the comprehension dawning in Sergio's eyes, and he's furious with denial. Mauricio insists it's true and says the situation has something to do with he himself, too. Then Sergio's really upset and starts jerking Mauricio around, demanding the truth.
It's bedtime at Victoria's, and Julia sits at the foot of Victoria's bed, trying to find out what Esteban told her. But he swore Victoria to secrecy, and so she doesn't utter a peep about it, which gets Julia a little ticked off. Then upstairs at his place, Luis is lying in a dark room, in bed wearing his blue jammies like usual (and a t-shirt under them), thinking scentillating thoughts of his dear Victoria. He's reliving the previous moments on the patio when she tells him she loves him and how fate brought them together. Suddenly, about 60 pounds of screaming little girl bursts through the door and jumps onto his bed. This is a really cute scene. Luis and Maru laugh and yell and carry on. He teases her. I couldn't get that word that she mispronounced, but Luis was having a fine time at her expense. Turns out Maru couldn't sleep, and sneaked a peak out the window at Luis and Victoria on the patio bench, and she gives him a ribbing about kissing Victoria on the mouth. Maru doesn't mind. She likes the idea, because it means the two of them are in love. This pleases Luis. But then Maru continues with that notion she got earlier, wondering what it would be like if she had a boyfriend kiss her on the lips! Now, this does NOT please Luis. He is so NOT ready for this! He dumps Maru out of his bed and sends her back to her own, yelling at her the whole time. Adorable. (No ticking bedside clock in this scene, though.)
In Queretaro, Camilo comes home after an evening with friends. Ines is sick as a dog with some cold or flu and couldn't go, so he fills her in. Word is that Sergio's contest of Fernando's will is going pretty well. They seem to feel like the last will was just an impulse and will be overturned. Also people seem to be wondering about the strange circumstances of Alfredo's death. But Camilo doesn't credit Victoria's suspicions. He thinks the idea is crazy, and may have emerged because she became a penniless orphan overnight, and the stress was too much. Ines is strangely hopeful that Camilo thinks Victoria was temporarily out of her mind -- I guess, because she'll never stop trying to get Victoria married off to Sergio. But Camilo laughs and says "crazy" was only a figure of speech.
Abel's lying on his stomach behind his sofa, stashing his new money into the baseboard hideout. As he counts all of his stacks, he's remembering Encarna's words about his lagging ambition and how much more he could have. (Abel's thinking of giving the cosmos an opportunity to pay him back for Fernando's murder, if you ask me.)
Back at Mauricio's hotel room, Sergio's trying to sober Mauricio up so he can have some chance at believing what he says. He's got him to shower and gulp down some coffee, but the story isn't changing any, to Sergio's horror. I'm going to get a breath of fresh air, Sergio says, and when I get back I want to hear all the facts!
At the Rivera's up in their bedroom, it's nighttime, and Andres has apparently come back to the master suite to sleep. But Valentina is sitting up, looking catatonic as she replays David's voice in her head. You're not pregnant! She wakes from her reverie and leans over to nudge Andres. Do you want to make love to me? she asks. Poor Andres is sound asleep, but this rouses him, and he gets up and goes down to his office instead. I have a lot to think about, he says. Once he gets down there, he writes a letter describing all his feelings. He doesn't want the child, which is a shame, since it's innocent. He still loves Victoria, no matter what's happened. And then he tears the letter up into four big pieces and leaves it on the desk. (Will Valentina find it?) Andres comes back upstairs and Valentina's still awake. She braces him with the fact that he doesn't want the child, does he? He won't answer directly, just says that the situation is absurd! He asks her to forgive him and help him. She wants to.
Constantin drives Elena and Toni home from the club. Elena kisses Constantin on the cheek saying godnight, and after she's gone, he touches the spot and smiles, like he can still feel it. I think he's got a thing for la Chaquira. Once inside her apartment, Toni notices a letter slid under the door. It's for Elena from Jovita. Jovita and Matias got an apointment with Jaqueline Andere the next day, and they will pick her up in the morning! Please wear something CONSERVATIVE, Jovita entreats. This gives Elena and Toni a chuckle. But suddenly Elena's worried Jacqueline may object to her somehow. Toni points out that for a volunteer position, one only needs a big heart, which you have!
When Sergio comes back into Mauricio's room, Mauricio has been hitting the whiskey bottle again. You're a hopeless case! Sergio exclaims. But Mauricio needed the false courage, because he couldn't tell Sergio otherwise. He finally grits out, Your uncle's death wasn't an accident! He didn't just fall down the stairs -- he was murdered! He knew too much! Sergio is astounded and doesn't know what to think. You're drunk! I don't believe you! You're drunk and crazy, besides! Poor Mauricio starts crying, because he's told everything and not been believed. Sergio can't handle this and runs out, leaving Mauricio behind, calling him a liar. Mauricio sinks down on the bed in a pitiful, whimpering heap. Sergio only gets to the other side of the door and collapses against it, crying and replaying Mauricio's horrifying words over and over in his head.
Rosario looks out the kitchen window, worried about Alma being out so late. Manuel comes in and grouses about her sleepwalking and insists there's nothing to worry about, but Rosario's not reassured. Meanwhile out in the street, Roberto's dropping Alma off, and she thinks to ask him about the wedding date. He tries to hedge a little but finally says he'll talk to her parents next week. She's ecstatic and truly looks happy to be marrying him. (I'm wondering if he knows he's leaving town next week.) Anyway, Alma goes in and Rosario braces her with her increasingly unseemly behavior, but Alma puts her fears to rest when she tells her the news. They're both happy, however temporarily.
At Valentina's, she's gathered all the foundation members in her living room to make an announcement. She's stepping down as president of the foundation, because she's going to have a baby! They're all taken aback, but finally come around and hesitantly congratulate her. Old Jose Joaquin really hits the jackpot, because Valentina decides to make him the new president after he offers to do the job in the interim. Now he's in charge of foundation funds -- great. (If Valentina was thinking, she'd realize he'd be glad to get her pregnant, too. Please excuse me for the gross thought.)
At Julia's, she, Lidia, Victoria and Luis are having dinner. Luis pulls Victoria aside for a mysterious little chat. She's wondering what he's up to when he produces a well-worn envelope full of cash and gives it to her. It's for the wedding, and he wants her to have whatever she wants. I know you're used to having things! She insists it's not necessary. I was used to having things -- past tense -- but now I am and will always be a happy woman, because I'll be with you! She tells him she loves him. Victoria has to mention, though, that her godfather wants to give her her dress. This makes Luis a little sad. But she can use the money for a veil and other things. I think this tarnished Luis's happy feeling. But they end with a kiss anyway, and I'll always take that.
In three very short scenes: Andres goes to see Dr. Reyes ostensibly to get his blood pressure checked, but they both know it's to ask about Valentina. Dr. Reyes doesn't spill the beans when Andres asks how far along the pregnancy is. Then Lidia, Victoria and Julia set off for the bridal shop; and Toni, Matias, Jovita and Elena go and meet Jacqueline Andere. Probably more on this stuff tomorrow.
While the ladies are gone to the bridal shop, a very haggard-looking Sergio shows up to see Victoria, but only Queta is around. She recognizes him as Victoria's old boyfriend, and he asks her to give Victoria his hotel-room phone number. Ask her to call me, please. It's extremely important! (Oh, I hope nothing awful happens to Sergio before he can talk to Victoria. This will open that whole can of worms again, though. I hope she and Luis can just get the wedding over at least.)
And finally, Andres goes to see Raul at his trailer. He tells Raul about his strange visit with Dr. Reyes. He said he felt like the doctor wasn't leveling with him somehow. Raul just sticks with his standard procedure, defending marriage and Valentina. Hopefully this pregnancy will bring her out of her depression and make her a normal wife again! (Andres is thinking, Oh, fantastic.) Roll Televisa logo, music up and tune in tomorrow!
At the restaurant having breakfast, Esteban succeeds more in upsetting Victoria, rather than really telling her much. His story is that Alfredo and Andres never really knew each other, that Esteban was a go-between. Alfredo's finances had already collapsed, and he hoped to get a loan from Andres. Esteban makes Andres out to be a heartless bastard, as though he wouldn't give Alfredo the loan, which is why Alfredo blamed him. And that is why he was exclaiming his name over the phone on the last night of his life. Victoria's amazed Esteban never told her this before. of course. But his excuse is that Andres is a dangerous person. He explains Andres's rough upbringing and how he supposedly got his start with Valentina's money. Coincidentally, Esteban contends that Valentina's family disowned her for marrying Andres, and that Valentina is completely under Andres's control. So, Esteban never really wanted Victoria around the guy. He wanted to protect her from Andres. After saying this, Esteban looks around the restaurant like he doesn't want to be overheard and whispers, He's capable of anything! Uh-hmm. He makes Victoria swear to never utter a word of this to anyone -- anyone! And she does.
At the fire station, Luis's unit is having a hose drill against another team, and unfortunately they lose. (But I do get to hear "Action Station," which I always enjoy, LOL.) Nice interlude. His buddies wish him the best with his marriage.
At the circus in Raul's trailer, Andres has explained what Esteban told him about Victoria. He wants to help Victoria, but Raul thinks he'd better forget about that and concentrate on the new baby that's coming. It will help you forget when you hold the baby in your arms. But Andres can't imagine being a parent at his age and this stage in his life. He's pretty horrified about it.
Over at Valentina's in the living room, she tells Laura that she lied to Sandra and Andres, telling them she's pregnant. Laura's very upset she did that, but Valentina begs her to go along with it until she can make the lie a reality. Please, I trust you! she says.
Back at home at Julia's, Victoria hears Esteban's voice again in her head, making her swear to keep everything he just told her a secret. Right then there's a knock on the door, and it's little Maru. Maru notices something seems amiss with Victoria, but Victoria shrugs off her worry. She insists instead that the two of them head down to the fire station to give her dad a surprise visit. Maru loves the idea and they take off.
At his hotel room, Mauricio is just waking up, apparently with a horrendous hangover. But the first thing he hears is Abel's voice in his head, from the tape, describing Esteban's order to kill Sergio's uncle. The second thing he hears is a knock on the door, and it's Sergio. It takes a few pain-filled moments for Mauricio to get to the door, but he lets Sergio in. Sergio has decided he wants to help Mauricio after all, getting him a real job for once being a main objective. The immediate task at hand is getting some coffee and food into Mauricio, though.
At Andres's office, Sandra congratulates him about the baby, since Valentina already told her about it. She acts happy, but manages to introduce the downside of the situation neverthless. Andres doesn't need help there. He's way ahead of her on that score. It's going to change our lives forever, he says with a heavy, resigned sigh.
Victoria and Maru are at the fire station, and Luis has been showing them the trophy room, which is a nice panelled room with pictures and a trophy shelf. Maru is examining the trophies, but meanwhile Victoria has Luis in a clench, which he doesn't seem to mind at all. He is murmuring to her in a very deep, sexy voice. She's telling him that after her talk with Esteban, she doesn't ever want to have anything to do with Andres Rivera again, and she's dropping her vendeta against him. That suits Luis just fine, too. Then Victoria tells him she just had to come see him, that she loves him with all of her heart. Luis smiles, so happy. She begs him to never leave her, because she would just die. Luis answers, Of course not, sweetheart, and then he kisses Victoria tenderly. They get briefly interrupted by Benny and Samuel entering and passing through, noticing everything, of course; but get back to a nice, thorough, long kiss. Yumm.
Over at Jovita's, Elena and Toni came over to ask whether she and Matias know how to get in touch with Jacqueline Andere, who's heading up funding the AIDS hospice where Elena is interested in helping out. They get out their old address book, but Matias says they knew the actress way back even before they were married. Jovita is funny, saying that was before anybody had telephones. She promises to find out the number, and Elena and Toni get up to leave, but not before Elena sincerely thanks the older couple for helping her start her life over.
At a restaurant, Sergio is getting some food into his hungover friend, Mauricio. Sergio makes him choke when he mentions Mauricio was moaning about some cassette last night. Now Sergio really is interested. Mauricio tries to get up to leave, but Sergio wants to know what it was he wanted to tell him. I can't tell you, I can't! Just then Mauricio's phone rings, and totally forgetting himself, he argues and rants angrily with Esteban, and even grits out his name after hearing he's changed all the locks. After Mauricio gets off, Sergio asks who this Esteban is!
Laura goes to Dr. Reyes office and tells him about Valentina lying about her pregnancy. The doctor is really alarmed and wants to talk to Andres, but Laura talks him out of it, explaining what Valentina said about needing time to get pregnant.
Victoria and Maru have apparently gotten the whole station tour, because Victoria is raving about how cool the trucks are as they walk past them. (I think they are, too. I love fire trucks.) Maru is climbing on one, and Victoria and Luis stand and talk there. She feels terrible that her godfather always seems so lonely. Luis is grabbing Maru and exclaiming that Esteban's going to have a new granddaughter, when suddenly the alarm begins clanging, and he runs off toward a truck. The trucks pull out from their stalls, all around Maru and Victoria, sirens screaming, as they stand watching, mezmerized.
Back at Esteban's, he's stuffing a wad of cash into an envelope when Sara enters. He called her in, because he wanted to tell her he's being transferred to Europe immediately and has to let her go. Here's three months' salary, plus a bonus, and a letter of recommendation. She's dumbfounded and almost crying when she leaves. Esteban sits there and snaps a pencil in half, muttering angrily about interfering women.
Lolita and Beatriz are going to a club for the evening. I presume this is part of Laura's encouraging Lolita to do things with Beatriz. On their way out of the patio, they run into Luis and Benny, the confirmed bachelor, on their way home from work. When Benny sees Beatriz, he is just pole-axed. He met her before, but never when she looked so PRETTY, he says. Lolita invites them to go dancing. Luis teases Benny unmercifully, when Benny claims he's not dressed for it -- like he's ever dressed any different, LOL! But Beatriz makes Benny's day, saying she thinks he looks just fine. Oh, and that gets Lolita and Luis really going on the teasing. Benny says he'll go another time, and as the girls pass by, Luis makes Beatriz stop and get a kiss from Benny. Luis gives Benny a little shove so he runs into her. Cute!
When Andres gets home that evening, Valentina greets him very brightly. He says they have to talk. He's been thinking all day that them having a baby at this late date is insanity. Valentina is instantly up in arms. It's not insanity! It's wonderful! She takes off, talking non-stop about how it will help their marriage and how marvelous children are. She's absolutely manic. And she brings David into the mix, which sets Andres off. He starts hounding her about how she has to face facts. David's dead! He's never coming back! Valentina can't stand to hear this and starts crying pitifully, sinking down into a chair. No, don't say that! Please don't say that. I can't handle it. Andres apologizes for being so hard on her, but he wants her to see the truth. She's whimpering.
Back at Julia's, Victoria and she marvel over the fact that Esteban never called the police about the breakin. Victoria repeats to Julia that she thinks she's been really selfish where Esteban is concerned. He's so lonely, and she thinks she'd better make an effort to spend more time with him. Julia agrees, especially since she won't be going to the office anymore. They also talk about Victoria's fears for Luis at work. His job is so dangerous! But Julia tells her she'd better get used to it.
Out in the woods somewhere, the scene is lit only by Esteban's car headlights, and he is meeting Abel finally to give him his money. He tosses the packet on the ground, and Abel has to bend over to pick it up, but he's pleased at what's inside. When Esteban cruelly demands he never show his face around Esteban again, Abel gladly agrees. Don't worry, he says. Esteban reminds him, though, that the murder of Fernando Estebes is solely on Abel's hands.
Mauricio goes to the hotel bar and looks to be wanting to get drunk again. He can't get it out of his head, the words of love Sergio had for his uncle, and how much he misses him.
At Luis's, he and Lidia and Maru are picking over beans or something. He's regaling Lidia about Beatriz and Benny, and suddenly Maru asks her granny if she believes in love. Well, yes, in the right circumstances. Maru sighs and dreams, I can hardly wait to fall in love. Luis is taken aback and speechless. Lidia chuckles at him.
When Beatriz comes in early, she tells Laura, who's waiting up, that the club was kind of boring. But not to worry, she's over the situation with Toni. She just appreciates him and respects him as a friend now. That makes Laura really happy, and she assures her that one day when she least expects it, love will happen to her. Laura tells her she couldn't sleep, worrying about her patient, who has serious emotional problems.
Later at Luis's, Lidia asks him whether he wouldn't consider changing jobs for Victoria. She's very anxious about the danger in your work. But he can't do it. A firefighter is what he is. He's proud of it, too. And also, the danger exhilarates him. All the firefighters' mothers and spouses feel anxious. It's part of the territory. He gets a little uneasy talking about it, and goes out for some air. Coincidentally, Victoria has also done so. They sit together on a patio bench, and she asks him whether he minds if she works after they're married. I think he doesn't want her to, but is willing to go along if that's what she wants. He wants her to be happy. Then Victoria brings up her fears about Luis's job. He just stops her on that one, though. He explains how he doesn't want to do anything else. She understands, but is still worried something will happen to him. She loves him. They think of all the strange fateful coincidences that brought them together, but here we are -- together.
And finally, at the Rivera's, it's bedtime, and Valentina says she feels a little strange. Must be her condition. Andres doesn't want to talk about it. The phone rings, and it's Dr. Reyes, but Valentina makes like it was Sandra and gets rid of him. Then she asks Andres to hold her, and he reluctantly does, heaving a big sigh and rolling his eyeballs heavenward. Roll Televisa logo, music up, and tune in tomorrow!
Luis leaves Andres's office after telling him off. Andres didn't answer, just stared at Luis.
At the Rivera's in David's room, Valentina has apparently spent her hysteria and fallen asleep on his desk. Laura comes in with a sedative for her on a tray and wakes Valentina up, but it's a rude awakening. She's so upset about Laura being in David's room that she tosses the tray on the bed, water glass and all, and pushes her out the door, yelling the whole time. I told you, no one comes in here but me and Andres! No one! Valentina slams the door behind them in the hallway, and Laura tries to cover her tracks. She apologizes and tells Valentina she was just trying to help. Valentina calms down a bit, enough to get suspicious and ask how Laura knew she might need a sedative. Laura just reminds her how upset she was when she came in from the appointment with Dr. Reyes, and Valentina admits he told her she wasn't pregnant. Laura wants her to accept reality, but nothing doing. No, uh-huh. Everyone is trying to fool me. They are all lying! But I am not going to fall for it. Nope.
Over at Esteban's, Sara is treating Jovita, the local celebrity, very well. And Jovita is happy to play the part. They are gabbing at the kitchen table when suddenly they both hear a noise out in the apartment somewhere. Jovita grabs a huge butcher knife, and they edge around the corner, looking carefully. Out in the office, an uncharacteristicly desperate-looking Mauricio is tossing things around on Esteban's desk, and he has scattered stuff all over the floor, looking for something. The ladies come in and surprise him, and Mauricio makes a quick, terrified getaway. Sara calls Esteban at the office to report the break in. He's excited and tells her to get all the building exits closed off. Meanwhile, Mauricio is escaping in his car when he gets a cell-phone call. He rips the antenna up and yells "I don't want to talk to you anymore!" but it's just poor Sergio on the other end, and Mauricio apologizes. He agrees to meet Sergio somewhere.
At Julia's, Victoria is now vowing that she never wants to think about Andres Rivera again! Guess she's really spooked by this latest development. Julia is really happy she feels that way, too. Victoria only wants to think about Luis and little Maru. Julia wants her to live in peace, and Victoria wants to, too. But she just hopes her dad will forgive her for not making Andres Rivera pay. Julia assures her that Alfredo would understand. He always wanted the best for you. And never fear, he's still with you.
Dona Lidia's at Queta's, calling her friend in Queretaro. Turns out that a lot of people are interested in buying Lidia's house, and she's had some good offers. Lidia says she hadn't thought about selling her house. Also the friend is going to forward some mail to her that has probably to do with Maru's inheritance. When she hangs up, Queta suggests that Lidia sell her house and move in there with them, either with Luis or some other apartment or even there with Queta. Lidia seems pleasantly surprised to consider it, but says she has to think about it. Right then, Jovita bursts into the room shouting about how she nearly had to turn into an assassin at Estebans and demands a double-shot of tequila.
Over at the tailor shop, Pan Dulce is driving her case home with Abel, saying she saw Esteban in the vecinidad patio and that she can recognize him now, in case something happens. See, I can be useful! Abel is awfully quiet and thoughtful.
In Andres's office, his discomforture after the meeting with Luis is so obvious, Aurora is moved to ask him if she can help him at all. But he answers no. Nobody can help me with anything. He leaves the office, and in the ante-offices, runs into Raul, who is just coming in and looks very agitated. He wants to meet with Andres right away, and they leave together for some private place.
Over at Valentina's, she's up in her suite, and when Sandra comes in, Laura's there to greet her in the living room. She wants to protect Valentina, but can't stop Sandra, who claims Valentina called her. I'm her best friend, you know! And Laura, don't come in and interrupt us. We don't need you listening to everything. See that you keep to your place -- you're nobody! She hands Laura her purse to take care of, like Laura's a servant, and traipses on up the stairs. Laura looks like she might almost laugh at this stupid remark.
Luis gets back from his meeting with Andres and goes to see Victoria at Julia's apartment. They embrace right away, so relieved to be together safe and sound again. He sits down on the arm of a upholstered armchair and takes her onto his lap. She wants to confess something right away, but he stops her, saying he knows all about it. He talked to Andres. Victoria's relieved and freely admits Luis was so right about Andres! Luis says never mind -- the only thing that matters is that we love each other. Victoria gives him the news that she never wants to go back to the office or see Andres Rivera again! All she wants to do is get married to him as soon as possible! Boy, this is all Luis wants to hear. He hoots and hollers and lifts Victoria off her feet and swings her around the living room. Happiness reigns!
At a restaurant somewhere, Raul has told Andres he sent Elena away. Andres tells him that Victoria was completely unmoved by his words of love, and even seemed like she hated him. He doesn't understand that at all. Raul suggests that Andres and he run away on a trip somewhere, like they did when they were kids. Andres isn't sure that what Raul's doing is the right thing, but Raul's feeling really weak and can't bear the slightest criticism from his friend right now.
When Sandra goes up to Valentina's room, she finds her sitting up in bed with a breakfast tray. Sandra's not too happy to get wind of Valentina's delicate "condition." Valentina lies and says Dr. Reyes told her she's pregnant, and Sandra turns her back on her, she's so angry about it. The evil theme plays.
Mauricio and Sergio are drinking at a bar somewhere, and Mauricio is well on his way. He is very morose. (Just call him Morosio.) He says his life is a mess. I'm sure Sergio thinks something weird is going on, especially when Mauricio says he has something he wants to tell him that will make himself feel better.
Over at Jovita's, she's theatrically (of course) relating the events of the so-called robbery. She's not too sure it was a robbery. The fellow was young and good looking, Sara seemed to recognize him, and what's more, the patron did not call the police about it! Matias thinks she's getting a bit too involved, playing detective.
I don't really want to talk about this scene, but I will do my duty. Alma is sitting at her house very impatiently, waiting for Roberto to call. He's past due. Rosario assures her he's just busy with work and is probably planning some nice surprise for her (oh, right). I'm sure Rosario is just trying to make her feel better, but it sounds so lame when you know the real Roberto. Meanwhile, he is sitting with Nena at a nice restaurant somewhere and upsetting her, too. He's informing her that he's transferring out of Mexico City and that they will be moving after their married. Why didn't you tell me? And what about my parents -- you know I'm an only child. Well, you can tell them what you need to, but it's already decided. We're leaving here. Back at Alma's, she and her mother are sitting at the dinner table, busy not eating dinner, since they're down in the dumps. Alma is worried especially since Roberto's failure to call comes just after the night she slept with him. There's a banging on the door suddenly, and it's Queta. She's seen Roberto sitting in his car out in the street, and Alma should run and meet him. It's so pathetic, the way Alma brightens up. The jerk couldn't even get his butt out of the car. When Alma literally runs out to see him, Roberto doesn't even look up until she gets in beside him. She's so grateful to see him, she kisses him and is all smiles. They go to his place, and he maneuvers her into the bedroom again. Oh, I hate this guy! Poor Alma.
Esteban's at his house looking at the mess in the office when the doorbell rings, and it's Andres. He's followed him there, because he has to know right away why Victoria thinks he's guilty of Alfredo San Roman's business failure and death! Esteban is really taken aback, and he hems and haws, claiming he couldn't know what makes her think that. But Andres insists Esteban knows her better than anybody. Out with it! Esteban rambles around, not explaining anything. He throws Andres some crumbs, saying that Alfredo made some bad business decisions. But why does this make Victoria accuse me -- and even Luis Torres? Esteban has to gather his wits and finally stumbles into this farfetched explanation. He says, After her mother died, Victoria's personality became very difficult. Andres can believe this, knowing how Valentina changed after David's death. Anyway, Victoria became such a problem, Alfredo had her to doctors, but still couldn't curb her willfulness. It was out of these distractions with her that Alfredo made his bad business decisions; and even the night of his death, he went out into the rain driving after a horrible argument with Victoria. (The lying son of a gun!!) Then he tops it all off, saying that Victoria resents and blames anybody with power and money, since her dad lost all of his! Well, Andres heaves a big sigh, and I can understand why. This story doesn't make a whole helluva lot of sense. But Esteban just goes on like it does, swearing him to secrecy, especially to Victoria and Luis. Yeah, I guess he wouldn't want them hearing this ridiculous tale. The only thing Andres said that I didn't particularly like was that Luis is just a kid.
Back at the bar, Mauricio has apparently told Sergio the sordid intimate details of his life during the commercial break. Sergio doesn't look real happy to know all that, but is certainly disgusted with the way Mauricio is acting. He is so drunk. Sergio tries to get him to stop knocking them back, since that's no way to solve his problems. Wasn't there some other way you could have done things in your life? he asks. Mauricio says no, that he's young and just likes the easy money. Later on, we see Sergio dragging the totally loaded Mauricio back to his hotel room and dumping him on his bed. The idiot is moaning and singing, and while Sergio writes him a note, saying he doubts how much he can help him out, Mauricio mutters something about the "cassette not being there" and "didn't even tell you!" I am assuming that he meant to tell Sergio what he knows about his uncle's death, but never got around to it.
In a cute scene at Luis's apartment, he and Victoria and Maru and Lidia are all at the table, and Maru is frankly and very grownup-like telling Victoria that her granny's cakes are the absolute best! They are having a little celebration, and Luis is opening a bottle of champaigne with some fanfare. When it doesn't pop and go all over the place, he's all disappointed, and lets out a loud, fake groan. But still, they are all laughing and carrying on and having a great time toasting the wonderful recent events. Victoria's home safe, she's quitting work, they're getting married, etc. Fun!
At Julia's later when Victoria gets home, Jovita is there and telling Julia and Lolita and her about the supposed robbery. She chickens out and doesn't tell them her suspicions, so that Victoria has to call Esteban to find out what happened. Esteban is not happy to find out about Jovita and Sara gossiping. He didn't know Jovita lived at the vecinidad either. He says they will see each tomorrow, but she explains about not going back to the office ever again. Esteban is relieved, understandably, and they plan to meet tomorrow to talk.
Back at home, Andres comes in and goes to his office, dead tired. Valentina comes in acting very bright and wants to know about his day. It was terrible, and he's about to confess everything to her when she pops her "news" first. They are going to have a baby! Andres is stunned. Later he heads over to Raul's trailer, and you get the idea he's never felt lower. Things just keep getting worse and worse every day.
Over at either Toni's or Elena's, they are having a meal together and looking at the newspaper. Elena notices an article about an AIDS hospice and tells Toni's she'd like to help out at a place like that. Once again, I get a feeling from Toni's self-conscious and defensive behavior, plus the way the director shot the scene (and the timing of the theme music in it), and even the fact that they keep bringing the subject up at all, that Toni is worried about having AIDS. But that is just an opinion, of course. He tells Elena she has a good heart.
Finally, next morning, Luis is at the station informing the chief of his impending wedding in about a month, and the chief congratulates him. Then Esteban and Victoria are having breakfast somewhere. I think Esteban is eating American-style pancakes. Anyway, Victoria tells him she's giving up the hunt and just wants to concentrate on making a happy marriage. Now that Victoria's not so vengeful, and also since he just made up that whopper to Andres about her, I guess Esteban feels like it's safe to make up some whopper about Andres to tell Victoria. He tells her that he can finally tell her the truth about Andres Rivera, and she is all ears. Tune in tomorrow morning!
At Julia's apartment, in her bedroom, Victoria reads to Lolita a juicy part of Luis's letter, but keeps the business part to herself. He hopes she will think about their future happiness and forget about getting back at Andres. He pleads with her to not go to Rivera Enterprises anymore.
At the station, Luis is leading the company in a ready drill. He's tough on them. After the drill, the alarm rings, and it's the real thing. They all take off on the trucks. After while, they return, and turns out the call wasn't anything serious, thank goodness. Luis, Benny and Samuel discuss the sad state of fire department funding in the city. They wish there was a firefighter school. They're underfunded, but the department is always on the spot in an emergency nevertheless.
Esteban comes into his office at the store and tells Maricarmen he's got to make a trip over to Victoria's. She's surprised Victoria's back, because she just talked to her evening before last. Esteban's demands to know exactly what she told Victoria, and Maricarmen mentions Victoria seemed fascinated about her work on the Quintana files. Esteban looks worried, and the evil theme plays.
At the beauty salon, Alma must have told her boss, Estella, that she slept with Roberto, because Estella is very agitated. Don't you know? The moment you do that, guys lose interest in you! But Alma doesn't believe it and assures her that won't happen with Roberto. Uh-hmm. Meanwhile, over at Manuel's workplace, he's following Roberto into his office. Roberto thinks it's a lovely day. I guess he does, after last night. And Roberto at first thinks Manuel wants to talk about that, but turns out he just wants to borrow some money. Roberto happily hands over a wad of cash, calling Manuel his father-in-law. After Manuel leaves, Roberto gets on the horn to his real future father-in-law and confirms he's going to accept the new position he offered him.
Esteban goes to the vecinidad and runs into Don Abel. Don Abel duns him for the money again, but Esteban puts him off. He leaves and just as Esteban's knocking at Julia's door, she walks up. Esteban blesses her out for letting Victoria leave the hospital, and then Luis walks up, hearing the tail-end of this. Esteban is in a rotten mood (Don Abel didn't help) and rudely insists that he's there to collect Victoria and take her to live with him. He should have known better than to let her live here! Whew, this gets Luis upset. He informs Esteban that Victoria is an adult and totally able to make her own decisions, including about where she wants to live!
Over at the circus, Raul sits alone in the big tent. Surprisingly, Elena walks toward him and sits down closeby. She pleads with him, telling him she laid out her life's story because she wanted them to start clean. She loves him and doesn't want to live without him. When Raul turns to her, we see he's crying. He just orders her to get out. Get out of my life forever, he says, and rises and walks away from her. Elena's crushed.
Valentina is at Dr. Reyes's office, and he gives her the news that she was incorrect -- she's not pregnant after all. Valentina's shaken and won't believe it. You're lying! Of course, I'm pregnant! He offers another test to prove the results, but she's not interested. I know what's going on with my body, and I am pregnant, and I'm going to have this baby!
Over at the store, Victoria's walking down one of the aisles when Andres stops her suddenly, demanding an explanation for leaving the hospital. She thinks this is the height of prying, and demands in turn to know why he should care. Andres just flat out tells her it's because he loves her! She is thoroughly flumoxed and incredulous. He wants to sit somewhere and talk about it, and when Victoria tries to walk away, grabs her arm. She jerks it away, biting out Let me go! But he convinces her to take five minutes in the cafeteria so he can explain.
Back at the vecinidad, Esteban takes off in a huff, leaving a furious Luis in his wake. What right does he have to decide this and treat people like this! Julia tries to make excuses, saying he's a caring godfather, but Luis is agitated and going to the store to seek out Victoria. On his way out, Luis passes Rufino, greets him, and continues out. Rufino has a present for Julia. He's brought some (I think) 78-rpm recordings of old-fashioned favorite songs and even found an old windup grammophone to play them on. Julia has always wanted one, it turns out, and she's just delighted. I can't tell exactly what Queta's response is, but when Julia pecks Rufino on the cheek, there is some reaction from her -- was it jealousy? disapproval?
In the cafeteria, Victoria and Andres sit in a more private area than Lolita usually goes to. Victoria just tells him that she doesn't believe he loves her. An unscrupulous guy like him doesn't have feelings; plus he's married and can only be after one thing. He pleads to know why she's always taking this critical tone with him. He thinks he doesn't deserve it. If he doesn't like her tone, tough. She stands up and walks off. He's confused.
At the salon, Alma notices Manuel loitering around the front of the shop. She goes out to him, followed by Estella, who doesn't like him at all and warns him not to keep Alma too long. Manuel now asks Alma for some money, threatening to ask Roberto for it if she doesn't hand some over. Alma doesn't want this and gets Estella to advance her some of her pay. Estella doesn't like doing it, but because it's for Manuel. Alma gives it to him, and he's very nice to her and kisses her.
Elena sits on a park bench feeling sorrowful. Soon, Toni runs up, come to meet her because she called him. Elena explains what happened at the circus with Raul and starts crying. Toni does something very sweet, and tells her to put on a good face -- literally. He has his makeup bag with him and starts cleaning up her tears and brushing on some color, all the while chattering cheerful words, and soon Elena starts smiling. She's happy to have such a caring friend, and it makes her feel better. He reassures her she should just trust in herself, in him and most of all -- in time.
Victoria has gone straight to church. In her mind, Andres incredible words replay. She is so upset she prays that the Virgin will help her find the peace that she lost after the death of her father. She prays for the Virgin to cleanse her heart of this poison. Help me to forget!
Valentina goes straight home and upstairs to David's room, even though Laura is calling to her and following her all the way. Valentina slams the door and huddles against it, shivering and gulping with fright and desperation. She begs David to hold her, hold her, and listen to her! The doctor said she wasn't pregnant! Laura opens the door to find Valentina standing there, arms entwined around thin air. Laura goes downstairs and calls Dr. Reyes to report about Valentina. He realizes that Valentina is much worse off than he had thought. She probably hears and sees David. She's not been able to face real life, so she makes up one!
In Andres's office, Esteban explains about his unsatisfactory trip to the vecinidad and how insolent Luis was to him. How dare he question me about my rights concerning Victoria! Finally, Andres tells him that he himself has seen Victoria, and this stops Esteban. I told her I loved her. Esteban can't believe it. Well, I couldn't help myself. And she said awful things back to me! Do you know why she has this terrible attitude toward me? What's that about?
At that moment, down in Maricarmen's office, a very agitated Luis is grilling Maricarmen about where in the world Victoria could be. Nobody has seen her! She suggests he go up to Andres Rivera's office, and he doesn't like the idea, but knows it's the only thing left to do. Luis does so and Andres wants to talk with him privately and gets Esteban to wait outside. Standing in front of his desk, Luis tells him he's looking for Victoria. Nobody has seen her. Andres said he has. He had a talk with her. Well, at least she's alright. Luis takes the opportunity to tell Andres to leave his fiancee alone. Andres doesn't let anyone tell him what to do. Oh, yes? Well, there's a first time for everything. You're used to always winning, but let me just assure you, you'll lose this time!
Victoria is just coming up the sidewalk in front of the vecinidad after going to church. Sergio has pulled up to the curb and suddenly notices her and jumps out to see what's wrong. She's crying. Sergio puts her in his car and takes her for a drive up to a park overlooking the city. (It looks a lot like Los Angeles to me.) He says bringing her there was to suggest she should get an overview of her situation, too. I guess she told him what Andres said, because she's angry, thinking Andres must be contemplating trying to buy her off with his millions. Sergio admits he came to Mexico City to try to help her in her quest, but now is thinking she should try to forget all of this and concentrate on making a happy, new life after her marriage to Luis. Victoria is about at the same point of agreeing.
Esteban is waiting in Aurora's office when he gets a call from Abel. Abel insists on meeting him and talking about the blackmail payments. Turns out he demanded they meet at the store cafeteria so that nothing bad could happen to himself while he was pressing Esteban. These two look and act so suspicious that Beatriz notices them particularly, while she's on duty, waitressing. Esteban keeps claiming that he doesn't give the orders, and Abel gives him a little while longer.
Luis is about to leave Andres's office, when he suddenly turns and asks the fateful question! (I couldn't believe it.) "Do you have anything to do with the business failure and death of Alfredo San Roman?" Andres is totally taken aback. Absolutely not. I never had any dealings with him at all. Luis is listening carefully and especially critically when Andres informs him that Esteban is the one who had dealings with Victoria's father, them being best friends. Andres calls Aurora to have her round up Esteban to corroborate his claim, but Esteban's meeting with Abel just then. Luis is about to leave again, and this time, Andres stops him. Why did you ask me about Victoria's father? Luis says it's not his place to explain. He should ask Victoria. Didn't you two discuss that when you met earlier? No, Andres answers. We talked about me and my feelings for her. Even though I know I don't have a chance, I admitted that I'm in love with her! This gets Luis hot, and he just deliberately turns over a chair getting to the front of Andres desk and as close as he can get to his face. Luis grits out, I am the one who loves her! And respects her! What you feel is something else altogether! Music up, role Televisa logo, and program those VCR's for tomorrow morning!
Andres arrives at the hospital in Guadalajara and is astounded to see the room deserted and the maid vacuuming. He gets on the horn to the doctor and blesses him out for letting Victoria go without informing him. Well, it's news to the doctor, too! She just up and left. Andres charges over to the physician's office and wants particulars, but the doctor doesn't have any. He says there's no real danger left, though, as long as Victoria's careful. Plus, he suggests that it must have been the boyfriend (meaning Luis) who convinced her to leave. Thanks a lot, doc.
Queta rushes in to Luis's apartment (he's at work) and breaks the great news about Victoria's return to Lidia and Maru, who are both ecstatic to hear it. Funny thing, though; Queta, who's such a gossip, didn't think to tell the one person who'd really want to know! When she realizes it, she rushes downstairs to call Luis at the fire station. Lidia and Maru are going to greet Victoria, and Maru has a present for her. When they get down to Julia's apartment, we see Maru has brought the music box to give Victoria, and Maru starts crying right away. (If this is supposed to be her mother's music box, it's got a different tune. The one I remember from Queretaro plays Maru's theme.) The two of them sit on the bed, and Maru tells Victoria that she hopes her dad and she will be so happy, because they deserve it. Victoria tells Maru she loves her, and right about then Luis comes in and sees the two of them together and hugs them both. He's happy.
Laura congratulates Valentina on her pregnancy, but strongly encourages her to guard her health and be sure and tell Dr. Alvaro right away. However, Valentina doesn't want anybody told before she reveals the surprise to Andres. It will be a blessing for both of us and for our marriage. Laura is supposed to keep mum. But she goes straight to Dr. Reyes with the news. They're both worried about Valentina's health, and Dr. Reyes especially about her mental health. It's funny, he even puts his finger to his head and makes circles like he means "crazy." I don't know if they did that on purpose.
Mauricio lounges on his hotel bed, about half a dozen magazines open around him. There's a knock at the door, and it's Adela. He greets her with a kiss, and she looks worried. They both do actually. He tells her something's happened, and he can't stay at his parents any more. She says she doesn't have much time, but wanted to bring him this money, because his call sounded so urgent. She pulls a big wad of cash out of her purse. I can't stand the thought of you being in need. Mauricio makes a show of graciously receiving it. You're so wonderful; there's no other woman like you, which is why I love you so much. He kisses her and embraces her, and Adela looks like she might faint.
Back at the vecinidad, a bunch of the neighbors have gathered at Julia's for a welcome-home potlock for Victoria. She looks so happy to be there and be loved by her friends. They are all relieved she's back, healthy and lovely as always. Rufino says it also gives him an excuse to be with Julia. Later after it's all over, Victoria and Luis are left alone in the living room, and she levels with him: I'm going to Rivera Enterprises tomorrow to gather evidence against Andres Rivera. He's really disappointed and tries to talk her out of it, for the sake of their happiness. You hate him, so forget about him! All I want is that you don't go there. I don't want you to be near that man. Think of our future, of you and me.
Over at Alma's, Manuel is cattily grousing about everyone's concern over Victoria, but Rosario and Alma are glad to hear she's alright. Alma can't go to the potluck, though, because she has to get ready for her date with Roberto. (Guess she overcame her shock of yesterday.) When she emerges, she really does look nice. Manuel conversationally comments that Alma knows how to handle Roberto. Alma says that little by little she learned to love him, and she hopes they'll get married, but she's not sure. He might not mean what he's said. It's been two days since she's seen him this time. After all, Alma tells Manuel, you say a lot of things that mom and I and all the neighbors know are lies. This ticks Manuel off, but Alma and her mom have a bit of a chuckle at his expense.
Esteban sits at home, moping and listening to a melancholy Mozart piano piece in a minor key. The doorbell chimes, and surprisingly it's Andres. He came because Maricarmen told him Esteban wasn't feeling well and was at home, and Esteban admits he doesn't feel well. (I guess he's really broken up about Mauricio leaving.) But what Andres wants is for Esteban to go find Victoria and get her away from Luis. Esteban didn't know Victoria was back in Mexico City, but must be kind of horrified to think Andres wants her to move in with him in the penthouse there! But Andres is bent on having his own way. I can't get that girl off my mind! She's really under my skin. Esteban counsels him to get a grip. No kidding. What nerve!
Valentina is in David's room, calling for him. He appears, and he's rather petulant. He's feeling a little threatened about his position in her heart, since she's going to have another baby. But she snuggles him and assures him nobody could ever take his place. I need you just to live! Right then Andres comes in, and of course, Valentina is standing there, holding thin air. He startles her, wanting to know who she's talking to. But she explains that some people talk to their pets or to their plants, so what's wrong with her talking to her memories? She feels great now, and he seems reassured. Ok, why not. Valentina asks, conversely, about his health. He doesn't look very good and she's worried. Andres tells her she's very good and loving. However, he indeed isn't feeling very well and intends to sleep in a guestroom. As you wish, my dear. As you wish, for now, she repeats, after he leaves.
At the club, Elena is just finishing her number, but she doesn't look very festive. The boss, Constantino, counsels her if she can't look any happier than that for the customers, then she might as well not be there. What's wrong? She says she has troubles. Man troubles. A little later, Elena finds her way into Toni's dressing room, and the atmosphere in there is very bright and festive. She likes it, and he says the outcasts have made a place for themselves there. She says she feels like one, too. She starts to cry, and he's very concerned for her. You promised me to concentrate on living for others, remember? He has to run out to do his number, but insists they will talk when he gets back.
Alma and Roberto sit at a restaurant somewhere. He's trying to convince her the cell-phone incident was all a technical mixup. She reluctantly goes along. Then he invites her to listen to music at his apartment, and when she balks, he presses her. He can't imagine why she'd be nervous with the two of them alone in the apartment of her fiance. Later, we see she has relented and the two of them are slow-dancing in his condo. He kisses her and moves her over to the sofa, and kisses her again, deeper and longer. That jazzy music theme plays, and things seem to be progressing right along. (The lamp is shining right in her eyes, though, poor girl.)
At Julia's, after all the guests have left, Lolita and Victoria are getting ready for bed. Lolita thinks she'll be cute and bring up the topic of all the hospital visits from Andres. Mom told me about all the times he came to see you! (Lolita finds it a little thrilling, I believe.) So, what do you think about that, hm? What do you think? Victoria turns around from her dressing table and skewers Lolita with a mean look. What I think, Lola, is that you are a little slow on the uptake! Because you well know what I think about Andres Rivera and the one and only reason why I came to Mexico City! Ok, ok! Lolita says, shrinking back and chagrined.
Up in the guestroom, Andres is having bad dreams of getting chewed out by Victoria various times. Suddenly he awakens, and Valentina is standing in the doorway. I heard you talking in your sleep, and I was concerned. Would you rather sleep with me? He groggily declines, and she bids him goodnight.
Back at Luis's, Maru's in bed, and Lidia's made Luis a big midnight snack. He's piling it on his plate (-- is that jelly in the jar?) when she asks him what remains to be done before he and Victoria can get married. He's thinking about his stomach and can't suggest anything, so he just asks her, Why? She says that he's so wonderful and noble that he doesn't want anything standing in the way of his happiness. This makes him hoot and holler for modesty's sake. Luis feels like they are a family there now, and Lidia observes it will be different when Victoria moves in. What are they going to do? Luis gets impatient with Lidia insisting again that she should return to Queretaro, and pleads with her not to go back.
Roberto is dropping Alma off at the vecinidad, and makes some comment about being the first man in her life. How happy they will be when they get married, etc. They kiss goodnight, and she does look happy, but as she's going in, he shakes his head negatively at her back, muttering to himself, "Stupid!" Argh! I could squash him. Now that he's "ruined" her, he's going to drop her, what do you bet? When Alma gets inside, her mother was waiting up and they talk at the kitchen table. Alma wants to be frank with her mom. I won't pretend: I'm no spring chicken, and I wanted to experience making love with the man I love. Besides, he's said he's going to marry me. Her mom starts crying because things have come to this, but she loves Alma no matter what. Alma starts crying, too, and gives her mom a big hug. I adore you, Mom! Alma and Rosario are solid, that's for sure.
Back at the club, Toni is onstage doing his Edith Piaf-style caberet number. Elena watches from the wings and looks ecstatic. I think it's pulled her back out of herself and her own problems again. Constantin comes up behind Elena, and they discuss their admiration for Toni's performance. The music track is loud over the voice track, but I think Elena points out that Matias and Jovita profess to be actors, but Toni's fantastic, and Constantin agrees that if Toni were in the mainstream, he'd go far. Matias and Jovita will no doubt show up in this scene tomorrow.
At Don Abel's, he's on the lookout for a safe time for Pan Dulce to leave his apartment unseen -- a time when nobody's loitering in the patio. But she decides to stay. Why not, she says? We've been together for years, don't have anyone to answer to -- why not? He laughs big, sarcastically accusing, Oh, don't tell me you're in LOVE with me!? Encarna just calmly answers, also why not? Don Abel looks very sober suddenly. She tells him she's worried about him, and that she's decided he deserves his money. He looks very taken aback and sober. (Now, don't tell me he's vulnerable to a little love?)
Luis must be on his way to work, and is hot-footing it through the patio, but he has an envelope in his hand. He gets to Victoria's door and hesitates, and then wedges the envelope into the crack where the door closes, and it sticks there. He goes on to work, but I am really worried about this envelope. I remember that Andres told Esteban to go and see about Victoria, and if he comes and finds the envelope first, what will happen? What does the message in the envelope say? I repeat, I'm worried!
Andres is trying to leave for work when Valentina runs out, asking him if he was planning on leaving without even waking her up. He makes some mealy-mouthed excuse and tries to get away, but first she makes a suggestion. Put Esteban in charge of the business for a while, and let's go on a trip for some R&R. He's concerned she's ill or something, if she wants rest. No, no, no problems. But I do have some solutions, she claims inigmatically. Andres looks perplexed.
And last, but certainly not least, because it's a great scene, Sandra and Jose Joaquin are in a restaurant somewhere having a steak dinner. He's complaining once again that the situation isn't working for him. He needs money. It's just not his style, the way he's living. So many middle aged ladies with money out there, just waiting for him. Plus I really don't want to see anything bad happen to Valentina. Sandra claims she loves Valentina, too, but Jose Joaquin begs to differ. Oh, no, you hate her. You've always hated her. Sandra grudgingly admits that she does. She's hated her since they were children. Valentina always had everything and she had nothing. Sandra just lives to take away everything Valentina has, including her husband. Jose Joaquin continues goading Sandra, insisting she lied about loving Andres. Ok! I hate him, too, Sandra admits. All I want is for him to leave Valentina! Jose Joaquin, just flies in her face and baldly insists, Well, he won't. He won't leave her, and you won't get anything. You won't have her money, her property, her status, whatever. Sandra is transfixed, listening. You won't have a child to compete with her, and you won't have -- and never will have anything! I honestly thought Sandra would cry, but instead she just stands up from the table very calmly, grasps a water glass and dashes the entire contents all over Jose Joaquin's shirt! Everybody in the restaurant is staring in horrified fascination when the Televisa logo rolls. Tune in tomorrow!!
Luis's sandwich fascinated me. I remembered from the first time that I saw Desencuentro that he had had a very funny sandwich with Dona Lidia. This one might have been it. He sliced open a sweet roll and spread on it--beans? peanut butter? followed by jam followed by something white--shredded coconut? (Surely Dona Lidia would keep shredded coconut on hand for her wonderful cakes. Also jam.)
So, will he have another, even more improbable sandwich in a future episode? I think we have to keep an eye on him!
Those rolls we used to get in Tucson, and yes, they were sweet! And I thought he said beans were in the bowl, too, LOL. And it sure looked like jelly, plus I thought what was in the bowl was white rice. I just couldn't believe my eyes. He sure seemed excited about it all when he saw it, though, didn't he? LOL!
Michael just read these posts. He says that those were definately beans. He also says that the white stuff could have been finely chopped onions. YUCK!!
I don't think it's anything, because even though we've had snow, it's just normal for around Chicago. But they did flicker, and probably Com Ed is just switching power sources; but keep this in mind in case I can't get on later.
At Queta's, she and Jovita continue to relish a good gossip over coffee when suddenly there's a knock and it's Encarna. Neither one of them want to see the woman, and they both snub her. Jovita even exits through the kitchen to avoid getting close to her. Encarna demands the rent receipts as Queta slurps her coffee loudly. Queta reminds the rude Encarna that she's in HER house. Meanwhile, upstairs in his apartment, Don Abel is crouched down on the floor behind his sofa, counting the money in his baseboard hideaway. He's not happy. It's not enough to make an escape with.
At the Rivera's, Andres is busy soaking up some brandy in his office and dwelling on his jealousy over Victoria and Luis. There's a knock, and Andres momentarily looks annoyed, but it's Valentina, so he dons a poke face. She's calling him to dinner and mentions that she signed papers for Quintana yesterday, assuming he had read everything thoroughly. He lies and assures her, of course he did.
At the hospital in Guadalajara, Luis and Victoria cuddle together and are sad and hurting that he has to leave. She's crying and he promises her that nothing's going to separate them when they finally get together. They say they love each other, and he wants her to remember what they discussed.
At dinner at the Rivera's, Andres is still morose and knocking back the brandy, and when he sees Valentina has ordered some of his favorite cheeses, he declares he doesn't deserve her love or her attention. She doesn't agree, of course. There's a phone call from Sandra for Valentina, but she won't take it. She tells Andres she just wants to be together with him without interruption. He just grunts and pours another brandy, heaving a big sigh and biting off "Ooh-kay."
At Ines's in Queretaro, she and her husband and Sergio are at the dinner table. Sergio reveals to them Victoria's suspicions about the death of her father and that he intends to go to Mexico City to see what he can do. They both think her desire for vengeance is crazy and want Sergio to try to talk her out of it.
Over at Jose Joaquin's apartment, Sandra tells him that she's having a tough time getting through to Valentina lately. He throws her a curveball, declaring he's thinking about giving the whole thing up. There are lots of bored millionairesses around who would just be tickled to have me pay them attention. Sandra intreats him not to leave her in the lurch. She has lots of plans and needs someone like him to help her. She's not going to let anyone get in her way with Valentina.
Speaking of which, at Laura's, Beatriz is noticing that Laura is acting a little strange and braces her with it. Laura admits she was feeling a little strange -- a little pepped up and accelerated. (Sandra's loco-weed juice must be an upper.) But she's feeling better now.
Victoria calls Maricarmen at the office, expecting to get Esteban. She's surprised Maricarmen's still there so late, and the secretary tells her that she's working on special, top-secret documents for Andres Rivera on Quintana Enterprises. Victoria listens in horrified fascination.
Way out in the woods somewhere, Don Abel stands hidden by a tree in the lights of a car that is just pulling up. A man gets out, and after a moment we can see it's Esteban when he walks over to Abel. Abel is there to blackmail Esteban. He needs more money to escape. Esteban doesn't understand. Abel's been working for "them" for years. Abel says but only recently did you turn me into a murderer. Now, he says menacingly, you wouldn't want to get me mad, because I have this tape here that I've made that explains all about your role in the killing. He gives Esteban the tape, and Esteban tries to put him off about the money, saying he has to discuss it with someone. Go home and calm down. Abel gets furious, insisting he knows what he's got and doesn't need any advice. Don't worry, there are lots of copies of the cassette!
At the beauty salon, Alma's boss wants to know if she isn't going out with Roberto tonight. Alma says she hasn't heard from Roberto all day, so she guesses not. The boss says why don't you give him a call? Meanwhile, Roberto is over at the future inlaws' house, having a jolly time, eating dinner, etc., having spent the whole day there. They all sit down in the living room, and suddenly Roberto's cell phone rings. Nena, who must have a guardian angel, just picks up the phone and answers it. Alma, on the other end, is stunned and asks who's speaking. Both women are speechless after that and hang up. Alma starts crying her eyes out and tells the boss that it's all over! Nena's folks are so eager to have Roberto in the family that they always gloss over whatever doubts Nena has about Roberto and convince her she's wrong. Roberto never has to do a thing. Nice folks. Listen to your daughter.
Esteban returns home and goes straight into his office and angrily pops the dreaded cassette into his tape machine. Abel starts talking and giving damning evidence. Following close on Esteban's heels, unbeknownst to him, was Mauricio, and now he comes in, very curious. You always act so proprietary when you're in here. What are you doing? He grabs the tape player away from Esteban and hears Abel explain about the death of Fernando. Mauricio's completely slackjawed. He switches off the player and turns to Esteban, saying, You ordered the murder of Sergio's uncle?!? Esteban tries to deny it, saying he was just following orders. Mauricio cannot stand the idea that he himself helped Esteban. Mauricio, please believe me! Mauricio won't believe him unless Esteban drops the whole business right now. Esteban says he can't because he's in too deep. He'd go to prison! Mauricio threatens to go to Andres Rivera, but Esteban insists it's too dangerous for Mauricio to do that. And it's too late, besides. Mauricio agrees and says he's leaving and not coming back. As he's walking out, Esteban stops him, pleading with Mauricio not to leave him alone. Sadly, he says, All these years that I've been doing this, it was with you in mind. Mauricio continues on and shuts the door behind him.
Back at the vecinidad, Beatriz is so worried about Laura that she drags Elena and Toni over to see what they think. Laura seems back to normal, but Beatriz also has a lot more confidence now that she has them as friends. Toni and Beatriz happily agree. Later when Elena and Toni are sharing a meal together, Elena observes that she noticed how Beatriz being worried about Laura sort of took Beatriz out of herself. Stopped her worrying about her own problems. Elena thinks that's what she will do. Concentrate on others and stop being self-centered. Even later, their boss from the club comes over and yells at them for not showing up for work. My show needs you! he tells them. Toni makes up an outrageous lie about them both having stomach flu, and I think the boss doesn't believe a word, but still accepts them back, if they'll just come to work that night. After the boss leaves, Elena and Toni have a good laugh, and Elena calls Toni "Pinnochio."
Back at Don Abel's, he's telling Pan Dulce about what he did to Esteban, but he won't tell her where he's hidden the tape copies. (She's really loaded with jewelry today.) He's rude to Encarna and boots her out. I wouldn't even trust my own shadow! he told her. It's funny, he's got this chair with uneven legs, and he rocks in it, diagonally from side to side. A rocker, but all wrong.
At Luis's apartment, Dona Lidia is just sitting down at the table with a cup of coffee and some of her famous cake when Luis comes in with his suitcase from his trip to see Victoria. He's pretty glum and worried and wants to talk with her. She says she always has time to talk with him. Luis wants to discuss Victoria -- and Andres Rivera.
At the hospital, Victoria is sleeping and being visited by a horrible dream of her father, Alfredo, insisting she shouldn't forget! Shouldn't forget! Shouldn't forget! Victoria bolts straight up in bed, gasping and crying out, and soon Julia rushes in. Victoria can't stop sobbing, and through the gulps, swears to Julia that the next morning they are leaving for Mexico City!
Back at Luis's, the clock is striking ten, and Luis realizes he has been bending Lidia's ear for hours with his story about Victoria's situation. The table is now littered with dishes. But Lidia is sympathetic and supportive. He thanks her for listening. He feels better. She says Victoria's life must be a living hell, and Luis agrees, saying poor girl. When Luis begs Lidia for advice, she counsels lots of patience and love. And have faith. Have faith, and you will see! She's turned into a nice mother in law.
There's a funny scene over at Jovita's, where she wakes up poor Matias for breakfast by banging a big spoon on a frying pan. Matias jumps straight up out of bed. She chuckles devlishly at her own self. It was kinda cute! But not great for a guy with a heart problem. I would have killed her, but I'm not in love with her either. Anyway, I guess she thinks things are getting boring around there, because in addition to that little ploy, she poses to Matias that the two of them do something different and go and surprise Toni at his club. They will all be surprised, he he.
Over at the Riveras's, Valentina awakens Andres, and he has a monster hangover. He feels like death warmed over, but she doesn't believe it. He must have been pretty lively the night before -- or don't you remember, she asks?
At the fire station, Luis is back at work. Benny and Samuel are way up on the ladder of a ladder truck, washing it, and Luis goes up and joins them. They want to know how Victoria is, and Luis tells them she's enchanting, beautiful, wonderful! They laugh, saying they MEANT her HEALTH. Luis is waxing romantic like he does a lot lately -- it was so nice to have her hold me, feel her breathing... I feel so good inside! Benny says he doesn't even have a dog to keep him company. Well, you could if you'd get a haircut and act right, Luis tells him. I'm doing this all according to plan. I love her and I respect her. First the wedding, and then the honeymoon. Generous razzing about that. Hey, I'm serious. I want this thing done right! Luis insists.
Andres goes over to see Chiripas (Raul) in his office and tells him he's desperate and has to do something. He's going nuts. He's going to Guadalajara and tell Victoria how he feels, come hell or high water. Chiripas tries to dissuade him like usual, suggesting the two of them, who are both having woman troubles, should go on a long trip, like in the old days. But Andres won't be dissuaded. He goes off to Guadalajara.
Victoria and Julia pull up in one of those little green bug taxis outside the vecinidad. The go in and some of the neighbors greet Victoria and wish her well. Victoria stops by the shrine momentarily and thanks the virgin for seeing her home again. When she gets into her bedroom, she sits in front of the mirror and hears Maricarmen in her head, informing her she has top-secret Quintana files in her office. It's eating Victoria up. Next morning, she gets ready and intends to go straight over there to Maricarmens, but Julia sees her and stops her cold. She yells at her good. No way are you going over there! You should have never left the hospital! Victoria argues back. This is her big chance to have proof against Mr. Andres Rivera!
Over at Valentina's, Laura is just coming in and hearing from the frightened maid that Valentina has locked herself in the bathroom. Laura is very alarmed and rushes upstairs. She tells the maid she should be calling Andres or the doctor, because Valentina tried to commit suicide in there before! Just then Valentina comes out, looking angry. Now, how do you know so much about me? she asks. Laura has quite a time convincing her she pried information out of Dr. Reyes because she wanted to help Valentina. Finally, Valentina decides she doesn't really care, because that's all in the past. There was a time she didn't want to live, but now she does. She wants to live for Andres -- and for the child she's going to have! She gave herself a home pregnancy test (that must have been what she was going in the bathroom), and she's pregnant! Music up and tune in tomorrow!
P.S. I am worried about the pregnancy and Sandra's loco-weed juice. As I mentioned, I haven't seen these episodes before, and I would be so furious with Sandra if she makes Valentina lose her baby with that stuff.
I loved the scene where Toni got Beatriz to finally eat by cooking her his very special chilaquiles! He believes in making them *very hot* and they are about as hot as Beatriz could take! As usual, I loved her acting--I could really believe that she was actually eating very hot chilaquiles for real in that scene--she spent as much time fanning her face, eating pieces of tortilla and drinking lemonade as she did speaking while she was talking to Toni!
Julia greets Luis in the hospital corridor, and he is 200% enthused to be there. She lets him in to Victoria's room, where the patient is still sleeping. The prince wakes her with a kiss. He kisses her head where it was injured, very earnestly and thoughtfully. Victoria opens her eyes and calls Luis's name, so glad and surprised to see him. They squeeze each other tight, having missed each other terribly. He repeats "I love you, I need you" several times, beginning to kiss Victoria passionately, over and over, more and more deeply. Luis is breathing hard, getting lost in the wave of romance crashing over him, and suddenly Victoria stops him. He pulls back a bit and looks dazed and confused, but she admits she has always dreamed of being married in white. Luis understands and goes along with her. He gives her a sweet little kiss and bides his time. (Meanwhile, I had to go run cold water on the insides of my wrists. I don't know how she can resist.)
Andres is in his office looking impatient and decides to give Victoria a call. She's busy being ravished by Luis, and so Julia answers the phone, and Andres hangs up again. Julia and Andres are both disgruntled. When Esteban comes in to see him about something important, Andres turns his back to him. He's not in the mood right now. But Esteban talks him into at least signing the papers. Esteban sets the sheets in front of him, levered one on top of the other, so only the signature spot shows. Andres signs them, and then as Esteban's leaving, decides he'd better look at what he signed. Esteban feigns indignation at Andres not trusting him and not wanting to redo everything he worked so hard on. Andres accedes, but reminds him to be conscientious, because he cares a lot about Quintana Enterprises. Esteban is very agreeable.
At a cafe somewhere, Mauricio is meeting with yet another lady. He calls her Adela, and I think it's the same name he murmured while he was unsuccessfully calling somebody the other night at Esteban's. And when the phone rang back and he prevented Esteban answering it, I think he thought it was this woman giving him a dial-back. Anyway, Mauricio says he's returned now, and Adela is glad to see him, but familiar with his broken promises. She says her kids and her husband ask about him; that she worries time to time that they suspect something. But Mauricio says he'd rather only the two of them met. He's very nice to her. She asks him if he needs any money, and he tells her, oh, no. At least not right now.
Pan Dulce (Encarna) is over at Don Abel's apartment when he comes in, looking glum. She's got his coffee made and even the biscuits that he likes so much. She wants to know what's got him down in the mouth, and he complains about the boss/es. They don't understand his important place in the business or treat him like he deserves! Encarna wants to know howcome they just don't strike out on their own and forget about all of that, and this suggestion gets Abel riled. But she just cooly repeats, well, think about it.
Over at Valentina's, Sandra has stopped by to make her daily dose of trouble. She tries to discourage Valentina about her marriage, but Valentina's still optimistic. The maid brings in the coffee service, and while Valentina's out getting Andres's new watch to show her, Sandra slips a few drams of the loco-weed juice into a coffee cup. Scarey music plays. Unfortunately for Laura, she comes in right then and gets the wrong coffee cup. Sandra is foiled for the moment, but looks very interested in the upcoming results on test-subject Laura.
Over at Jovita's, they're at the breakfast table, and Matias is still not feeling very well. He tries to play it down, but she wants him to see a doctor. In a very sweet scene, Jovita earnestly tells Matias that, even though she doesn't tell him very often, she truly loves him a lot. He's the most important thing in her life and wouldn't know what to do if she lost him. A very warm, pastoral theme with lush strings plays. He's very touched. Matias agrees, he loves her a lot, too. She's the happiness in his life. I always ask myself why you stay with me with all the tough times we've had. She answers, the only thing she wants out of life is his company and his love. And I want to tell you something else. He interrupts, suggesting: Your age? They laugh and she smacks him lightly, insisting, Maybe on my deathbed! No, really, I wanted to tell you that another reason I want to be with you is that I admire you, admire your work. I am your Number One fan! And I know that you're a better actor than I am. He jumps up and hugs her, saying, Oh, no! You're the best actress in Mexico! They're both teary eyed and choked up. It was a nice scene.
At his office, Esteban calls Maricarmen in to talk with him. He gives her the confidential files he was just working on, but really wants to talk to her about Victoria. He's willing to foot the bill for Maricarmen to go see her in the hospital in Guadalajara. He'd like to know what's going on with his goddaughter, what her plans are for getting married, etc., but can't go himself right now. Maricarmen feels uncomfortable about ratting on somebody, but Esteban assures her it's nothing like that. She finally agrees, since she trusts him and is the company's most faithful employee. Wonder what Esteban's up to.
Back at the hospital, Luis is hauling and tossing Victoria bodily around the suite, hollering and laughing and making her squeal and giggle. Julia's fussing appropriately, and so after depositing Victoria on the sofa, goes over to tease Julia similarly. She decides it's time to leave, and Luis concentrates on Victoria. Are you hungry, are you thirsty? What would you like? I love you and I'm your slave the whole day! Julia comes back in and tells on Victoria, about her trying to go home before she's ready. Luis is going to talk to the doctor about taking her home with him. They start cuddling and smooching and Julia has to leave again.
Over at Toni's, he's bringing in some food on a tray for Elena. She stayed the night, and he has been taking care of her the whole time. She won't eat, and he threatens her with a spanking. But she feels just terrible. Doesn't even want to go back to work at the cabaret. Nobody cares about me. I don't have a single hope left in life.
Back at Valentina's, it hasn't taken long, and Laura is getting sick. She wants to go home and leaves. Sandra tries to talk up Jose Joaquin to Valentina, but she's not at all interested. She's only interested in Andres. Sandra insists she's being foolish. Valentina disagrees and even reveals she's determined to have Andres's child!
At the hospital, Luis is talking to the doctor in his office. He gets the disappointing news that she can't go home yet, but takes it ok. Luis wants the best for her. Back in Victoria's room, she tells Julia she plans to tell Luis that Andres came to the hospital and threw his weight around. Just then Luis comes in with a nice bouquet of flowers and is suddenly a little embarrassed to compare them with the huge bucket of flowers on the table. But Victoria loves his bouquet and hugs him, saying thanks. He gives her the doctor's advice, and they are both disappointed he has to go back that night and leave her alone again. She cries, and he tells her he'll always been in her heart. He shows her where, drawing a little circle with his finger in a respectfully appropriate spot. Victoria still cries and begs him not to go.
Out in the streets of Mexico City, Laura tells Valentina's chauffeur to let her out in an alley somewhere, and she has to run in and, we suppose, throw up. We only see her come out, rubbing her mouth. When she gets back to the vecinidad, she passes by Queta and tells her she's not feeling well. Queta's worried. Right about then, Rufino walks up, but Laura walks on past, too sick to speak. Queta invites Rufino in for a snack. He's busy crunching churros and chugging hot chocolate when he declares that if he weren't so interested in Julia, he'd be after Queta for her cooking! Queta takes it as a compliment, but insists she's not getting married again. She's a widow. Was her husband so bad? Rufino asks. Oh, no! He was wonderful, my little mama's boy! Rufino asks, your what? She repeats, mama's boy. Well, he says, I am very much interested in getting married again and would like to find a nice mama's girl. Queta exclaims, oh, you can't say it that way! But does Dona Julia know how you feel? He says he's not had a chance to talk to her about it yet.
Over at Alma's, Manuel is in a bad humor and insulting Rosario about her cooking. Then he demands to know from Alma when the devil that wedding is going to be! He objects to a comment of Rosario's and starts to grab her to knock her around, and Alma stands up to him. You leave her alone or we'll both walk out of here, and I will be telling Roberto just what kind of guy you are! This stops Manuel cold, and he backs up and walks out, but not before intentionally knocking a dining chair over. Rosario's crying.
Back in Mexico City, Andres calls the doctor from his office for news on Victoria, and the doctor tells him he just talked to Luis. Oh, the boyfriend is there, is he? Andres doesn't seem pleased. Yes, the doctor says, I'm sure he's visiting with her now. Andres hangs up and looks peeved. He dials Victoria's room again. Victoria and Luis are watching TV, and Luis picks up the phone, so Andres hangs up again. Victoria's got something on her mind and finally gets Luis to stop watching TV so she can have his attention. She reveals that Andres visited her in the hospital. She has his full attention now, by the look on Luis's face. Plus, I am not the good person you think I am. You idealize me. More worriesome news for Luis. Luis asks, just what do you mean by that? Victoria says, I want to tell you the true story of my life. Uh oh! He's thinking, what next?!? Cut to commercial.
When we get back, Victoria's crying her eyes out. I told you all the wonderful things about my life in Queretaro, but not the awful ones. She's so upset, he wants her not to talk about it, but she insists she has to. He's very conciliatory and helpful and kind to her. She explains about the terrible storm and her father's wild drive to Mexico City when he wrecked and died! He went out that night to find and confront the man who ruined his business! Comprehension dawns on Luis, and he murmurs, And you think that man is Andres Rivera. She nods her assent. (Nice closeup of Ernesto in this scene. Daniela was close up, too, but covered with tears and mascara.)
Andres comes home early from work. I guess he can't work, he's so disgusted. He heads straight for the study and disappoints Valentina, who's so glad to see him, shutting the door and asking not to be disturbed. Great husband he is.
Esteban is alone in his office. He puts the new Quintana files in a lockable drawer and pulls out a single piece of paper from it. The page is a sheet of company stationery and is blank except for what I assume is Andres Rivera's signature. Esteban must have inserted the sheet among the other papers Andres was signing. He can put anything he wants on this page now, and it's pre-approved. Esteban brings the sweet thing to his lips and gives it a kiss. Then he sticks it in a folder, puts it in his briefcase and leaves the office, telling Maricarmen he has a late appointment. He also reminds her that the Quintana files are completely confidential and no one's to see them.
Back at the hospital, Luis pleads with Victoria to give up this vengeance. Please don't be a slave to hate! Forget him, forgive him! She can't, however, and then he begs her to at least stop working for Andres's company. You hate him, after all! Victoria begs him not to ask her to do this. But he does ask her -- for herself and for them both. Sweetheart, you don't have any proof, only suspicions. She assures him she's thought about quitting so many times, but she just can't. Her dad's death always haunts her, and she wants someone to pay. Luis feels so sorrowful; he realizes and observes to her that her hate for Andres is greater than her love for himself. Victoria feels ashamed. But Luis says he won't insist, at least not for now. Instead he'll help her so she can put her mind at rest some day. Victoria sobs piteously and tells him no. She hugs him, saying he's too good for that. She doesn't want him touched by all this. Too good.
Manuel comes back home and tries to make up somewhat with Rosario. He needs her help in dissuading Alma from filling in Roberto on his true character. But Rosario has learned a thing or two from Alma, and gives him a piece of her mind about a guy who's so cowardly that he beats up on his own wife! Talk to Alma yourself. Over at the beauty shop, Alma is taking her fury out on the floor, mopping it, and discussing the state of macho men with her boss. Her boss tells her it's the fault of boys' mothers, who raise them to be the king of the castle, expecting women to do everything for them. They're ignorant, lazy and useless! Alma is just glad that Roberto is different than all that. So sincere.
Different, alright. He's over in the dining room of his fiance's parents' big house, and the two of them are working on the wedding guest list. Nena (forgot her name) wants assurances that he will be faithful to her, and Roberto gives her a nauseating line or two about how sincere he is. You know me, I always tell the pure truth!
And finally, Matias is at a doctor's office. The doctor recommends some tests and an EKG, plus a diet regimen and moderate exercise. Matias tries to dissuade him and convince him it's just stress, but the doctor says fine, but I'm the doctor. So Matias has to go along with it. Back at the vecinidad, Jovita is having a coffee klatsch with Queta and gabbing to her about Matias resisting going to the doctor. Queta says, but Matias is a saint, and Jovita has to agree. Now, me, I'm a real devil! Just let me tell you some of the things. Queta would like nothing better, and as she rubs her hands together and greedily says, "Tell me, and don't leave anything out!", the Televisa logo rolls. I had to laugh. Queta is so funny. Anyway, tune in tomorrow!
Darn, darn I wish I could have seen that scene with Luis and
by
Victoria in the hospital room. But it is just as well, I would of had to take a 20 mintue cold shower and end up with ice on my teeth. LOL. I almost had to take one from just reading about it. No wonder you love him so much.
I feel so sorry for Elena, turns her life around, meets Mr. Right and gets a broken heart. She is very brave to have told him. Don't think I could have been that good. I wouldn't have told him a thing and ran with him.
I am proud of Alma and her mother finaly standing up to that jerk of a man. If you can call him that!
So, they cut off your Galavision, did they! Well, look, I tried to write you, but your e-mail address wasn't working. Write me with a good address, ok?
is a good "main story" all on its own. And I think that the actress who plays Elena is really fine. I'd much rather watch and think about Elena than Sandra (of course, Sandra is really important to move the plot along, because left to be her own sweet self, I'll bet that Valentina could captivate Andres again. And then there would be big gaps in the story. To hold the audience they would probably have to put in kissing scenes, say with Victoria and Luis, hmm, too bad that this novela is already all filmed, because otherwise, maybe that would be a good suggestion for them...)
I hope that you can get Galavision soon! I've seen this novela before and the best is yet to come! (But even after having seen the whole thing, I must confess that last night's kissing had really stuck in my mind from the first time. I was really looking forward to seeing that scene again!)
Cool stuff. Luis could use one of these.

FIREFIGHTERS GET NEW VISION EQUIPMENT
(Chicago Tribune)
January 24, 2000
by Warren Moulds
ST. CHARLES, IL -- St. Charles firefighters have new high-tech, heat-seeking vision equipment that will allow them to find people trapped in smoke-filled rooms and fires hidden behind walls.
Fire Chief Larry Swanson credited employees of the city's Wal-Mart for raising $6,000 to help buy the $10,500 device, which works like night-vision goggles.
On-call firefighters and their union donated the remaining amount. Swanson said the gift came at an opportune time because he had intended to include the thermal-imaging device in an upcoming budget.
To bad they have to come up with some of the money. They work to hard and should be better supported by the public. They, the police and the libaries are always the first to be cut back with budget cuts. They need more not less. But at least this one fire company has it and may be soon others with also.
And I agree about supporting them. I did to begin with and always voted for their bonds in elections, but I think my antenna will always be up for firefighting news and events after this.
