Shirley, how pretty! They are holding their own despite that darned old hot wind. We hit 107 here today, but I am sending it up to Patrick for the week-end - so get set, Patrick!
The leaves on your brugs are so pretty, Shirley as well as the blooms. Mine have nicer leaves this year than last except for CG, and he is still yellowing.

Nice pictures Shirley but I'm sorry you are getting the heat along with the wind. Those two things combined make for a very short lived flower.
Got my fingers crossed you soon will have a garden full of blooms.

Great looking brugs, Shirley. I hope when the weather cools a bit, you're rewarded with a great show. Are you doing any cross pollinating between those first 3 (Daydreams, Tatiana & Rothkirch) ?? I see all kinds of possibilities there if they're compatible enough to cross.

Shirley, I realized not too long ago that our Brug want list is mainly filled with ones I first saw pictures of from you, MM, Tuffy, and Pumpkin just to name a few. I'm not sure if I want to see more pics from you or not, Nah... I love the pics, but has anyone figured out how to make them "scratch and sniff?" I keep scratching the computer screen, it's just not working.

PS: I'm glad you got the posting of all the pictures to work, keep 'em coming, please.

Thanks everyone. Thank God...I can take a picture without getting all of the dead grass and weeds in it..just don't look too close.

Patrick, I did a couple of crosses with DD using Mountain Magic on one and Susanne on one and I got a double pink from each one. I may do the cross again since I got so few seeds from those pods. However, now isn't the time to make crosses. It is way to hot and they don't usually take. I'll have to wait for cooler weather. You have reminded me tho, that I should go see if there is any pollen to save Thanks.

Lynne, I'll try to watch what I post. I don't want to cause you any further brug want problems. NOT! LOL!

Okay...this is about all I have now due to 100 degree temps a very tropical type humidity. Today the winds are finishing them all off. Guess I'll just have to wait for the next flush and hope it is cooler.

Shirley... I feel your pain on the fried blooms. I was about to have my first flush on my Day Dreams. When we got home from the hospital the hot winds had fried the inner skirts before they could open. She is a sad mess. I want to put her in air conditioning to see a pretty double pink bloom but I bet the mites would love that!! Your other blooms are lovely that made it through the heat!

Re: A few new pictures

July 20 2006, 9:08 PM

Thanks everyone. Bren, I had two Day Dreams plants, one in sun and one that just got a little morning sun and I thought I'd be able to see bloom on her....and then 100 degrees, 81% dew point, and winds fried the blooms. I was just sick, but I see more buds developing, so there is still time for blooms.

As for fragrance....I have to admit that I don't like the heat. I run out and water and come back in. I haven't stuck my nose in any flowers other than MM and Champagne Fizz this year. They are tall and I can walk under them for a sniff. Just for you Patrick, I'll run out right this minute and take a smell......Okay, I just took a whiff of several blooms in the yard. I would say that Northern Peaks is a bit spicy smelling. RK has more sweetness to her smell. Most of the others didn't have much, if any fragrance. I'm wondering if the extreme heat has something to do with that. NP and RK both had fresh blooms tonight, otherwise, the older blooms had very little fragrance. NP is one that Terry grew from seed. She might be able to describe the fragrance better having been around it for a while.

Now...let's hope I get some blooms soon that aren't pink. I'm really tired of pink right now. LOL!

And I am just hoping my Aurea Pink opens before the buds fall off because all I have are two yellows and one white. All the buds fell off Cypress Gardens - that one really, really doesn't like 107 degrees. I am so hoping they can revive a little this week-end as we will be only in the low 90's -- and lows in the low 70's. Wow, haven't seen that in awhile. Keep posting the pinks, Shirley - I love them ----

See my new YELLOW brug. It has a unique new shape with a darker corolla center and numerous anthers. It holds its color and shape well and makes lots of seeds. It has no smell, but it isn't poison either. I believe it might even be self fertile. LOL! Oh, and the best part is that it re-seeds itself so I don't have to over winter it.

Okay..kick me now!!

Shirley, LOL I won't kick you. Right now I don't have a brug bloom one.

Day Dreams has a bloom that is about to break open the calyx. I can't wait either, and she has plenty more buds waiting in the wings. I'll post a picture here for everyone to enjoy when she does bloom. In my environment DD has withstood the hot, mid-day sun in a large pot. Even in mid to upper 90 degree temps. But she must be keep well watered, this would be the case for any brug in full mid-day sun.

And Orange King won't be too long behind DD in blooming. I can't wait to see if OK will have dark orange blooms in the summer heat. If he does, it will over come one of the two major obstacles in it being released this year.

Re: A few new pictures

Ok, taking out my list and adding either Rothkirch or Northern Peaks.
I love the tendrils on both, and we still have to get some Brugs that point outward.

Shirley, that yellow "Brug" ... We have a few similar ones that grew from some spilled birdseed. They're shorter, not even up to my knees.

Question... Do yours constantly stare at the sun? I've been watching these for a few days now... early morning the flower heads nod toward the east, mid-day they're straight, and in the evening they nod toward the west. I should remember to check at midnight to see if they're nodding straight down! lol

I have a sunflower that is so large and so tall, about 9-10', that it can't hold it's head anymore. Looks like somebody praying.

Wish my brug seedlings had grown like this sunflower planted about 3 months ago.

It's funny but I don't think the birds around here know what sunflowers are as I've had another head on the ground, seeds spread out and it hasn't enticed any birds yet and we don't have squirrels around here. I've enjoyed watching it grow, though.

Gee, Jarie, my birds usually strip them while they are still on the plant. I had one this year that I wanted to remove from where the birds planted it so as soon as it matured, I pulled it up and hung it on the fence for them. Maybe I should send one of my birds to have a talk with your birds - just look at all that good food they are missing ------------

Re: A few new pictures

Good idea, Carrie, send a few bird dieticians our way. Our kiskadees, of course, are fisherbirds and find my little lizards a delicacy. Hummers have a different diet. Our green parrots should like seeds but they don't stop long enough to feed. Not sure about mockingbirds & sparrows, you'd think they'd like sunflower seeds but with many of them around, the seeds still lay on the ground. I guess even the opposums aren't sunflower lovers.

Oh well, at least I've enjoyed watching it grow..and man did it grow..TX style.

Jarie, it is mostly my cardinals that devour the sunflower seed, but I also have chickadees and titmice that love them. And for the record, my possums, skunks and racoons clean up what the doves don't of the seed dropped on the ground.

Re: A few new pictures

Unfortunately, Carrie, we don't have cardinals nor robins here. I really miss both of them as we had many while living in Illinois. Had forgotten about the doves. Nothing seems to find my sunflowers enticing even though they're laying on the ground waiting to be eaten. I thought we had opposums but I guess none have come to our backyard for awhile.

I just planted three more sunflower seeds. If nothing else, I can watch them grow. You know, I just thought of the ducks, maybe they will partake sometime while wandering through our yard...which hasn't happened for awhile. They seem to be staying in the pond.

Just had a downpour...3/4" in about ten minutes....looks great on the newly mowed lawn that my hubby did last evening.

Re: A few new pictures

August 20 2006, 8:08 PM

Thanks everyone. I really enjoy everyone's pictures. Growing brugs is a lot of work and when they don't bloom, it isn't much fun. I'm going through the Not Much Fun stage right now. Still hoping for blooms on a lot of them before frost. After that first flush, I've had zippo. Right now I have a new little double in the garden, the cross done by a friend and this is the only seedling to survive. It's white, small, and kind of stuffed. I have one other that has a couple of blooms on it, but I had already determined that I would compost it as the triple + blooms are deformed. Susanne and MM both have three or four blooms and that it is. No, Harlot has a couple. It's really bare for having 80+ brugs. I can't even get any crosses made. It was to hot to make them when I had blooms. The pollen was gone. So, anything I do get made, will be late in maturing.
