Ok, here's a thread where we can chat about the brug lists we post and the details of our swaps. Can we get comments/questions going on dates to ship by, size of cuttings, etc?

Aha! I can't wait...I want to jump in here with the first topic of conversation!

Shirley commented in another thread that brugs start to slow down their "sap flow" if you will, in the fall. I think most of us have discovered that cuttings taken in the spring & summer root easier & faster than those taken late in the year.

While some of you in warmer climates have an extended season on brugs, I think we need to agree upon a latest date scenario for cutting & shipping. I hate to see money and effort spent on cutting that might freeze in a late shipping or may meet with rooting failure in a colder & darker climate.

Shirley...would you offer your opinion on dates?

Re: CHAT Thread for the Fall '06 Cuttings Swap

I will probably have to ship out of here the first couple of weeks in October, unless Mother Nature has better plans for my fall than usual. As for things coming in....as long as they are sent Priority Mail and the person in cold climates is notified they are coming, it shouldn't be a problem if the cuttings are taken before frost time in that area.

I can usually get two to three extra weeks out of my brugs by putting them in the garage for the three nights that it usually frosts here and then taking them back out for an extended fall. It's warm again then and they are usually blooming. I don't have trouble rooting them at that time. So, I could feasibly send cuttings up until the end of October. At that time we will get a hard freeze and almost nightly frost.

Size of Cuttings

Personally, I find it very hard to root greenwood cuttings. I don't have good luck rooting in water and bought a cloning machine to try to help. Well...I'm not totally a believer yet.

When I send cuttings, I try my best to send them "thumb" size or larger, and about six inches long. That's a give or take. If I run out of the larger cuttings, I will send some greenwood and hope that some of you can get it to root.

I prefer to send below the Y cuttings when I can. I'll also send basal shoot material too, when available. I guess I'm saying that what I send it what I prefer to get, but we can't always have what we want, so I'll be happy with whatever I get and hope that my little machine will help me get cuttings rooted. LOL!

I don't want anyone cutting up their nice plants to send cuttings to me. I've found that the larger our plants are in the spring, the faster we have bloom. That is why I won't be cutting below the Y on any that I plan to keep. I have extra basals and plants of the doubles, so it won't be a problem sending good cuttings from them.

I would also like to say that I don't mind sending cuttings to people that I trade with, but it does get expensive sending Priority boxes so, if there is no trade involved, I think it is only fair that postage be paid by the recipient of the cuttings.

Now....my fingers need a break. It's time to hear from someone besides me. LOL! Looking forward to trading and sharing.

Thanks for all the great input, Shirley. I'm in full agreement with you.

I had a greenwood cutting root easily for me in early summer, but generally have much better luck with wood that is more mature and not super skinny. I will follow your example re cutting circumference & length as well as below the Y where possible. If I have to vary from that, I will advise the recipient.

I also agree that priorty mail is the way to go & that the recipient should pay that expense unless there is a trade going both ways.

Shirley, I love your attitude of sending what you'd hope to get...a mantra we can all live by! I would rather decline to send a cutting than to send something that's likely to fail.

I have to agree with everything that Shirley said. I have had trades that I sent long 8" or so cuttings, that were semi to woody. And receive little pencil like green tip cuttings that really never had a chance.

I don't have much to trade right now, so I don't think I can make an available list just yet. However I have seen a couple wishes that I might be able to fill.

I also agree with priority mail and postage paid by recipient if no trade is involved.

On the subject of green wood vs. hard wood, I haven't had problems rooting either, but I'd rather know the preference of the person I'm sending to. I don't want to send green to someone who's had problems rooting green, or hardwood to someone who has problems with that.

Re: CHAT Thread for the Fall '06 Cuttings Swap

August 8 2006, 11:23 AM

I wish I could root the cuttings for people, but I'll have to just send bare cuttings.

Basal cuttings are taken from a stalk that grows from the base of the plant. Those cuttings should produce taller growth than cuttings taken from above the Y. If you have a short brug that you wish were taller, just wait and watch for that tall shoot to appear. Of course, sometimes it never does. Let it get about three to six foot tall and then cut it off at ground level and root it for a very nice tree.

My cloning machine is a Daisy Cloner with 8 cups. My friend has another kind that has 20 cups. The company I bought it and supplies from told me that they are extremely easy to make and they carry all the parts. It's basically a short plastic container, about 12 inches tall and as big around as a stock pot. It has a top with eight holes in it that the net cups sit in and there are collars that fit around the cuttings and into the top of the net cups to hold the cuttings in place. Inside the cloner you place a pump that recycles the water and with this particular little gadget on it, it sprays water lightly on the base of the cuttings all the time. Pretty simple. I would probably make one if I weren't so lazy. In the water...I'm using distilled and it calls for distilled or bottled water, I put a fungicide, a cloning solution concentrate, and a vitamin/fertilizer that is optional. I just bought a different cloning solution. I didn't like the first one. Felt like I could have grown the plants faster in dirt. As soon as this first batch is finished, and they were all greenwood cuttings, I'll change water and cloning solution and start again. Hopefully it will work better next time.

Re: CHAT Thread for the Fall '06 Cuttings Swap

I don't have much to trade this year - only 2 named brugs, one of which is too small to take even one cutting from...) but I would GLADLY pay postage for any cuttings someone is generous enough to offer me. Shall we set a "going rate" of $5 or do you think it should be more?

Priority Mail IS the way to go but even that is not foolproof. I sent a large brug seedling to Linda via Priority Mail and it arrived about 2 weeks after I sent it! And the poor thing was beyond hope.

As we get later into October, maybe Express Mail would be a better choice for the final trades of the season. It would probably cost twice as much, but it would be worth it to avoid any problems.

Re: CHAT Thread for the Fall '06 Cuttings Swap

August 9 2006, 11:37 AM

Express mail costs over $17 for a box the size of a shirt box or a little larger. That was before the last rate hike. I won't go that route. I've sent Priority mail, hundreds of boxes over the years, and never lost one. That doesn't mean it can't happen, but at the difference in price, I'd rather lose a priority box. Express can be lost too. This is another good reason to send thumb size or larger cuttings. If the box is late, they will still root.

I've found that the best way to mail Priority is to just mail it and when you know how much the box costs, let the person know who owes you. They can then slip stamps in the mail to you. I've always asked for stamps because I live in the country and hate having to run to the PO when I'm out of them. LOL! Generally it will be a Priority Stamp and some small stamps to make the total. I don't like checks, myself, because that means a trip to the bank. I think that people who are here all the time can be trusted to return the postage money if it isn't a trade. I've done this for years and only been burned a couple of times. If you don't pay up, I'm sure something can be said on here that will remind you to get your money/stamps in the mail.

If you need the money prior to mailing, just ask for what you think it will be and if you get too much, slip it in an envelope and send the extra back or email and ask for more, whatever the case might be.

Another good way to mail is by using click n ship. You can have it put on your credit card, but you have to have an accurate way to weigh the boxes.

Re: CHAT Thread for the Fall '06 Cuttings Swap

August 9 2006, 11:53 AM

Shirley, I use Priority Mail also and the price varies due to weight and zip code, so the only fair way is to wait and see how much each individual's package will cost to mail. I trust the people on this forum to send the money "after the fact". Funny story: I shipped brug cuttings to a GW friend in San Antonio last year (along with a number of other shipments) and heard from everyone but her that the package had been received. So two weeks after shipment, I emailed her and asked her if her cuttings had arrived in good shape as she was the only person I had not gotten confirmation from. She said she had forgotten about them and would go to the post office TOMORROW to pick them up. She then emailed me that they had rooted in the box, took photos to prove it and emailed them to me.
I heard from her the other day that all are doing well and blooming.

chat for fall of 06 brug cuttings

August 14 2006, 3:56 PM

Shirley . where did you get your brug rooting machine, I don't think I read that or can you post a picture of it, I"d like to try to make one if I can, I think i've seen them around or others have posted pictures of them.

I root all year long, but do slow down this time of year, there are a few that I absolutely cannot root and I would love to try this system your talking about on these brugs that I have a hard time rooting.

There were a few of your brugs on your list I was going crazy over, and I have the other two on your want list if they aren't supplied to you yet. I can give you at least y cuttings or as big as my thumb cuttings, or I can try to root them for you. the insignus orange is about to bloom so I'll wait till later on to take cuttings off her.

I guess I'm gonna go back to my have trade list on the fall trade list and post some special brugs I have i forgot to do that.

see ya

oh yes, and thank you so much for reminding me of this site. I'll be around more often you can bet on that.

Re:cuttings

August 15 2006, 12:58 AM

Ok I am still rather new to all this Cutting and rooting process and I have a few questions? I do know this much. I recieved from a garden swap in june two unknown Brug cuttings. They had a few roots on them. So I put them out side in a bucket in the shade and in a two weeks I had more roots and leaf growth! Then I planted them into 3 gallon patio planters. They have done ok so far but I don't think it will bloom this year! I plan to just put the planters in the basement for the winter and hope they make it!

Now to my question. When you send me cuttings in Oct. and Nov. what am I to do with them? My house is small but I do have a Basement that stays around 35-40 degrees in the winter. I think this is too cold for cuttings. I am looking into a homemade Clone or Root Machine. I guess I could keep it in the house and get roots to grow. But then my next question would be what to do with them after I get root growth? I am guessing I will have to pot them up. Will they grow in the house? What kind of light will they need? I really don't have much room in the house. I guess I could squeeze a few in on top of the dishwasher in front of the window!

Here is a payment thought ...I have and use Paypal ...does anyone else? Well no matter what I would be willing to send cash upfront or whatever is needed for shipping.

I posted a link in a new post to a homemade Cloning Machine ...I am seriously thinking of making! I am so looking forward to growing more brugs for next year thanks to all of you!!

Re: CHAT Thread for the Fall '06 Cuttings Swap

August 15 2006, 10:23 PM

Wayne, for years I have taken cuttings in the fall and just stuck them in damp soil to root. I always do a couple of each kind in case one doesn't make it. Right now is a good time to take cuttings for yourself from your own plants.

You can keep big plants in the basement at those temps with no problem. Mine are kept colder than that. Just barely water them...maybe a cup or two of water each month. Newly rooted cuttings won't survive the cold, you are right about that. I can tell you that once they are rooted, they don't need tons of light. Just enough to keep them semi-growing or semi-dormant, whichever you prefer. I give mine light so that they will gain some size over the winter, but they don't usually get all that big. Winters in Iowa don't give us much sunshine.

Last year I took cuttings of whole plants. I cut them off at the ground. They were at least four ft. tall. These were seedlings that hadn't bloomed and I wanted to see what they would do this year. I stuck them in buckets of cold water, kept them in the family room and all but one rooted. Some of them are outside now with big fat buds on them and some were affected by the heat and have no buds yet.

In any case...you can root any part of a brug that has some trunk or stem on it in soil or water. I bought the cloning machine to do some tropicals that I want to keep, but don't have the room to hold over the whole mother plants. Just thought I'd see what it would do with some brug cuttings. Good luck with your projects everyone.

Not sure if this quesiton has been answered before or not....and there probably is no definite answer. After making cuttings, how long before they need to be rooted either in water or soil? I probably won't set up an aeroponic system so I would do it the "old fashioned way". Can they be left setting around say for several weeks or a month or will they dry out too much??

Re: CHAT Thread for the Fall '06 Cuttings Swap

Your best chances for rooting will be to put them in the medium you are going to root in, as soon as you cut them. The open wound (cut) will take in fluids readily at this point. If you do hold them for a period of time, you can make new cuts and rehydrate them. It takes time. Personally, I would at the least, keep them in a jar or container of water. Remember when you take cuttings to keep those clippers sanitized between plants and keep each plant's cuttings in separate containers to avoid spreading possible disease or viruses. This doesn't mean you have anything, but it is always possible with brugs.

I've been upset with the way my brug leaves have been looking and finally took some pictures and sent them to Monika. I told her I was scared to death that they had a disease or virus. She wrote me back and told me not to worry, that the condition was caused by the heat, the broadmites that I had and the spray I had used. I had to spray when we had the terrible three weeks from you know where. Spraying isn't supposed to be done when the temps are over 80 or maybe it's less. Shoot, it wasn't below 85 at midnight, so I had to take my chances. It was either that or lose the plants to the mites.

So that no one worries about me sending them broadmites on their cuttings, I will be dipping each cutting in Forbid. It kills all stages of mites, including eggs.

Shirley i'll bet your relieved to find you don't have a deseased brug there. I have sprayed this time of year, sometimes youjust have to regardless of the weather, didn't seem to bother them too much. broadmites are so hard to get rid of unless you want to spend the big bucks, As far as I can remember, isn't that forbid stuff high dollar? I bit the bullet and bought the merit for aphids, best thing i've ever done. have been trying to keep everything else under control with malathion spray . it takes a while to get those broadmites under control though . Hey Everybody... Rather than send each one of you a email I am taking the easy way out and making one post!

I can help out some of you with a few of your wants. Due to the weather our Brugs did not get the size they usually are this time of year. If they grow more between now and October I can add more to the list but I will go by what I have now and if you would like some cuttings now instead of the fall, I can probably do that too. I figure most boxes are not going to weigh more than a pound. If you have paypal, you can reimburse me through there. I do have a business account so I am charged to receive funds. I figured a box 1 pound and under with fees will be $4.47... If you want to mail me a check the charge will be $4.05. If you're on the list just email me and let me know if you'd like them now and I can see what I can do.

I don't want to hurt anyone's feelings so if I don't have your name and wants here it isn't because I am ignoring you but simply because I didn't have what you asked for or the Brugs are very limited and not available for trade. We do have a business so I have to take care of our customers to pay the bills but I believe in sharing too. What comes around goes around and I do like putting smiles on faces!!!

Bren....ya made my day reading that.I NOW have a lil something to look forward to.I was going to order butterfly but can wait now.

It has been strange with the plants shorter.Cypress gardens is blooming& is barely tall enough to keep the flowers out of the dirt......

Shirley....Is there a differance in basal shoots from the ground & the ones that sprout from the lower portion of the trunk.I normally let my ones from the ground get about a ft and will search for some of the root and cut some of the root for the shoot and stick in water.I have a few growing on lower trunks.

Postage. They have a flat rate priority shipping box.It comes in 2 sizes.one more flat& one more square.I find them very handy for shipping something of weight like cannas. It would cost $20+ for a xerox box of cannas, but $8 for a flat rated box.I find myself buying stamps from the PO sometimes cause is 18 miles to the PO.I average about $1 in mailing& a 2 day wait depending when they are ordered and you can buy shipping stamps. Its been a year, but I had some $4& $7. IF you know the weight of box(digital scale) you can caculate your shipping cost on the USPS web site.box measurements also& caculate zip to zip.You can get pretty close to actual cost.

I don't think I left anything out.I gotta go water& fertilize for another scorcher of a day.My lime tree& bougainvillia's leafs look awful....like they've been in an oven.We had storms but no rain.....too HOT to rain when the heat index is 107 at 11 pm.
Cypress gardens has bloomed& knightti held onto one bud& it bloomed last night.darn thing is SCENTLESS
But it looks pretty.

You can generally tell if they are a basal because they grow straight and strong, plus very fast. Side shoots don't grow that fast, in my book. Basals will grow tall before they Y. Side shoots can produce flowers very short. Once in a while, you will find a basal shoot inches and feet from the mother plant. Those age good ones to keep too. Hope this helps.

Wayne, I don't know what has been offered to you so far, but I have a few here with some color, if you want them, none of them have names though.
A pink with yellow... I have a couple of these already rooted.

A Charles Grimaldi look-alike, several already in the process of rooting.

And some peach (starts white, changes to peach,) might have a couple of these already rooted, or I can get you cuttings.

Ugh...missed swap?

August 25 2006, 8:43 PM

Well, not sure I have much worth swapping- just Dr. Seuss and an unnamed double white. But I would like send postage to pay for a priority box for if some one is still feeling in a generous mood. From what I understand from the postal web site they have two types of priority boxes that can be filled up to 70 lbs and shipped anywhere in the US for $8.10. Does that sound right?

Sorry, I missed the wish list. I am just wishing for Pinks!

Please email me if 'Dr. Seuss' is interesting to you. I can send nice thick cuttings off my very large tree.

Epi=epiphillum, like a Christmas cactus, only the blooms are bigger, and just as many different blooms on them, as on the brugs. My mom used to have them, and when they bloom, they are so beautiful. Night blooming Cirrus is one type you may be familiar with. They do not do well in Washington state, I have tried. Selma

Thanks, Selma, sounds beautiful. It might grow down here in these tortuous conditions. Might have to try it sometime. I do have a Christmas cactus that does pretty well...bloomed beautifully this past Christmas. Will be anxious to see Joy's in bloom.

"Patrick, glad I'm not your neighbor, might have to call the Kops!"

Just have to say this...
Ya know... there really wouldn't be a need for that.
In 1999, living in NY, I was sitting outside topfree.
Someone felt the need to call the cops on me. (Oink oink.)

In 1992, the state of NY passed a law allowing women to be topfree (legally) anywhere that it is also legal for a male to be topfree.
Despite this law being in effect for 7 years prior to this day, the cops still responded to the call and came out to force me to put a shirt on. Had I even known about the law at the time, I would have refused and been able to continue sitting there enjoying the beautiful day.

"If something about the human body disgusts you, the fault lies with the manufacturer." - Lenny Bruce

Patrick, I say, dance away! And let me know what day, I'll be there, with bells (and nothing else) on, lol!

I have her sitting in my window in my office at home since I spend quite a bit at the computer on and off. It has been exciting watching her progress! Especially in such a short time! Off work today so trying to get things done in the gardens, but VERY hot! (Taking an ice tea break!) Going to redo all the gardens around my pond in front which means major pulling up plants and relocating or putting in pots. Will leave the plumerias but move everything else. Lots of trimming and weeding to do everywhere!
Will post pictures as the Lady progresses. I am so thrilled!

Lmao....I wanna see how red Patrick's Face gets after that quote!!

Yes New York does have that law...but I thought it was only legal at State Parks or State Property.....Local law would still be against it..or there probably be dancing going on everywhere!!!!

Re: CHAT Thread for the Fall '06 Cuttings Swap

September 2 2006, 2:15 PM

Wayne, it actually has more to do with equality than anything else. This site has some good info on it. If I'm understanding the info that's available online correctly, the specific laws regarding it (statute 245 of the NY state penal code,) were never updated after the court decision, so even though it is legal to be topfree anywhere in the state of NY, except in places where shirts are required for everyone, the people in charge just don't want anyone to find out about it. Incase you want to try looking it up, I believe the court case is The People vs. Ramona Santorelli and Mary Lou Schloss, at the New York State Court of Appeals.

"Maybe we'll both just have to dance on the same night!"
Patrick, great idea! If we can get more people to join in, it could be a nation-wide 'Show the full moon to the full moon' night.
We could start a new holiday! LOL!

We never had much luck getting the webcam thing to work well, but out there somewhere there's probably a video of my husband painting the bottom of one of my feet with a sharpie... strange night, odd request...lol.

Speaking of cuttings though, ours from Bren... (Thank you, Bren!)

L'Amour and Axel Rose both have roots showing beyond the dirt, Hawaiian is growing on top, so I'm sure the roots will show through in a couple of days or so.
