After seeing the prices of the Cloning Machine ...I went on a search and think I have found what I need...just thought I would share! This guys website is loaded with good info!
I thought that the store bought ones were too high dollar for my blood as well. This seems easy enough and cheap enough.
I'm very new to the cloning machines, the water inside the tub never actually touches the botttoms of the cups then ha? just the bubbles that burst sending up tiny bursts of water right? I didn't see where he said what kind of pump to buy? I need to go read on, I"m considering doing this as well.
I have a couple diff brugmansias that I have the hardest time rooting. I wanted to try this with those.
YOu know Wayne, I think i'm going to start accquiring all the items to make this. I think I can do this LOL. I have a pump already, so most of the expense is already taken care of, I have the container too. need that timer though, also I think i'm going to try the clay pellets instead of rockwool. I'm new here and not sure yet how to post pictures, but it won't take me long to figure it out and I'll post pictures when I get it set up.
The net cups are cheap and I use neoprene collars to hold the cutting in the cup. They are cheap too. If I want the collar to hold a larger cutting, I just cut it to fit. I bought extras for that purpose. Here is a picture of a brug cutting that is rooting in it's net cup, without anything in the cup. Mine don't hang down through the bottom. I would be worried about getting it out of the cup without tearing some of the roots off.
I'm sure it works just great and if this one takes a nose dive, I'll make the next one.
Yes I was amazed by this website and the info too! I think the pump he uses is a double air hose one. A good one can be pricey at around 40.00 or so. The timer too might be about 19.99. If you add it all up it can cost around the same as what shirley paid for hers but it is much bigger. I have almost everything I need too. But I was thinking of using a smaller container and maybe a single pump in the middle! The guy on the site says the real key is 72 degree temp. Shirley thanks for the pics and info,it all helps.

I too kind of wondered how they got the cutting out of the cup when all the roots are down below the cup.
your pictures are inspirational shirley, that's a small cutting that I wouldn't normally be able to root , most that small rot, and seems they do well with the cloning machine that small.
did you get your net cups from that same link.
Also, one other question, LOL, not about this subject , how come it says anonomyous on top of my sign in name?
Hi Kathy Ann...I'd like to add my "Welcome" also! We'll look forward to chatting with you and hope you'll have some pics to share with us.
It looks like you've resolved the Anonymous problem. If you have further techie problems, feel free to email Ruth Ann - she's quite good with this stuff.

Kathy Ann, yes I did get the net cups and collars from the same site. The guy I talked to there was Pete. He said the cups and collars should last a year or more, depending on how much you use them. I also use a cloning solution, and fungicide, and I have a product called Liquid Karma, recommended by Pete, that I'll use next time around. It is a very weak fertilizer. That's what I'd call it anyway. The container calls it a "plant growth catalyst".
Thanks for the welcome, I guess I did solve that problem of annomyous LOL didn't even know it.
Thanks shirley, I have just placed my first order for the hydroponics stuff, I bought the 3 in net baskets and some of the neoprene tops to hold the cuttings in place, and I will also try the clay pellets off ebay, to see which I like more, I think the idea of nothing around the base of the cutting is going to be more useful in this situation and the clay pellets all around the base won't let the bubbles reach the end. We'll see how it turns out, I'm very excited about getting this started. I also bought some stuff to take the clorine out of the water. and I bought some thrive alive B1.
I have a heater from a 50 gallon fish tank and will have to pick up a pump at walmart to pump water in the bucket. thanks for the info on what you use in the water too shirley, I am also looking into some clonex do you use that? does it have a shelf life? wasn't sure.
I haven't had a chance to figure the picture posting thing out yet, but soon I hope, I have lots of pictures.
For the picture posting, here's the link to the FAQ page about it. Also, the page for making clickable thumbnails. If you have any problems, Ruth Ann's really good at fixing them.

KA, the fungicide is called Hydroguard and the cloning solution I'm going to try next is called Power Clone, both by Botanicare. I tried Olivia's cloning solution and it didn't do what I expected it to do except on the Clero Ugandense and those things shot roots in about four or five days that were two inches long.
I've heard of olivia's cloning gel, wondered if it was good or not.
I've gathered the heater, pump, hoses, and I got a bubbler from the fish tank department at walmart. Getting those supplies together, going to cost more than I hoped for though. I hope is going to be worth it in the end.
Wayne have you been gathering your things to make yours yet? I have a container but wanted to wait till my net pots came in before I got my husband to drill the holes. The anticipation is driving me nuts, I really want to get the ball on the road here LOL. I hope to be able to Root Mountain treasure with this homemade gadget. I have the hardest time rooting that one along with BIG. wouldn't it be nice to know there wasn't much that cloning machine couldn't root> and I'd love to be able to cut 2 in cuttings or maybe 3 in tiny ones and see how well they root.
I'll keep you guys posted to the progress of mine, and will take pics as soon as we get it together.
I'm rooting some cuttings out in the greenhouse now, and they seem to be doing quite well dispite the heat out there, but still have trouble with mountain treasure.
Shirley, do you have a timer on yours? I have yet to get one, and was wondering , jeese, I'd have to spend alot more money to get one that turned off for 45 min and turned on for l5 . walmart doesn't sell timers that can do that.
I'm thinking, why can't I just turn it off and on ever couple of hours, for so long. I may have to do this to keep the cost down, I think i'm gonna have bout 40.00 inmine when I get it all done, that's with all the stuff for the water too. Which will last along time Iknow,
No, mine is a leave it on all the time machine. I can't imagine that the pump will cost too much to run, but I've been wrong before. Mine has been running since day one, 24 hours a day. I've been told to sterilize the set up between new batches of cuttings, but gosh...that would take a lot of solution and distilled water to start over every time. I'm going to try just adding a little more of the cloning solution and see what happens.
have you gotten your stuff together yet Wayne? for your cloning machine.
I'm still waiting on the pots to come in, and a couple other things still haven't made it here yet. Want to wait to drill the holes in the lid till I get the pots. DH is going to do that for me. I'm really looking forward to getting it put together. I want to try axelrose and mountain treasure first off in it.
I put a short fat cutting of Janet Reno in mine two nights ago and it is all nubbed up this morning. I think I'll be doing more fat cuttings in it than tip cuttings. I think I'll be able to get more plants from less cutting material this way. Hope you two have fun with yours. I'm still in disbelief at how quickly the Clero Ugandense rooted for me. I'm trying some Iochroma cuttings now. They are usually hard for me to get going.
Kathy I stopped by the Nursery and bought some Rooting solution. I already have most the stuff to make it. I am kinda waiting til I get back from a work trip in Canada. Also Michele is sending me cuttings and I will have it done by then.
