Garden Update...end of September

Well, as we wrap up another month it's pretty obvious there's not much left of the growing season in my area. We could easily go another 5-6 weeks before frost, maybe longer, but I don't think I'll see much more brug growth this year. Just before dark today, I took stock of what's happening with my brugs:

DR. SEUSS - having a big flush & has a large basal shoot rising up.
CG - budding up for a decent flush. I'm layering the shorter of 2 trunks.
CYPRESS GARDENS - has been blooming for a few weeks and continues with a good showing.
BETTY MARSHALL - 6'+, heavy flush now.
MY 1RST BRUG..UNKNOWN PINK - 6+ feet tall & blooming.
EPxPNC1 (my hybrid seedling #1) - 7 feet, 2 blooms open & quite a few buds developing.
EPxPNC2 & EPxPNC3 (the sister seedlings) - about 5' & both have Y-ed..have buds I think will open this year.

(the following are all new from cuttings this year)
KBS - no blooms currently..a few small buds visible.
SUNSET - 5'+ had 4-5 blooms & now setting several buds.
EP - about 3', had 2 blooms & now has several buds opening.
ROSA TRAUM - 4' has just formed a Y & I see a few buds.
GOLDENE KORNETT - 2'+, 4 blooms open, darker than CG
(2)MIAMI ORANGE - 2'+, just Y-ed & showing buds, nice serrated foliage.
PINK BEAUTY - has 2 4' trunks, 1 starting to Y.
WEISS POSAUNE - 3', trying to Y, bothered by mites.

(the following are seedlings started this year)
SUAVEOLENS WHITE - 5' and just showing a Y.
CG x INSIGNIS PINK - 4' with no Y yet, nice serrated lvs.
(2)MTN. MAGIC X UNK - 3', BIG leaves..looking good.
(3)FROSTY PINK X UNK - nearly 4' with no Y's yet.

The sanguineas all look good but only one has any buds. Their future with me is still very uncertain.

I have several cuttings rooted & starting to grow under fluorescent lights. My cuttings from Shirley arrived a couple of days ago & have nubbies starting to whiten.

Today, I bought some 8' lumber...2x2's and 1x2's...to build a box-like frame in the garage - sort of an add-on room for my "greenhouse in the garage", making it possible to store brugs below the area the garage door occupies when it's open. I'm trying to not leave too much for the last minute when the weather turns cold.

Patric,
Most of mine are giving me one last flush of blooms. The unknown finally bloomed, it is a nice yellow with a slite blush with age.
Island girl has set buds and I am looking to protect to see it through to blooms.
I have several seedlingsthat I will keep under lights this winter. These are an unknown mix, so when they bloom all will be interesting.
As for the sangs..... I have yet to see any buds, with moving and work I haven't given my brugs the attion os any blooms are a bonus.
DH just got done with the shed so I now have a place to store them.

Gosh Patrick, it sounds like you are in bloom heaven right now with lots to come. I probably couldn't count 5 total blooms here and for that reason, decided to get started on cuttings. I sure hope next year will be better, tho I won't have a lot of the brugs next year due to cut backs. I'm already looking forward to growing more seedlings and less from cuttings. Right now I'm heading to the PO with boxes for Allison, Joy, Ruth, Jarie, Wayne, and Selma. Talk to you later.........

Patrick, you had better send me photos if you don't post them here. I have been meaning to share with you that my Weisz Pousane is loaded with buds and should be opening today or tomorrow. I have blooming right now: CG, Betty Marshall, Aurea Pink, Martha Stewart, Whiskers, Dr. Seuss, Frosty Pink, and several (4 I believe) unknowns....oh, and Janet Reno. Looks as if Cypress Gardens will have a third flush in the not too distant future.

Well, my unknown pink (my first brug) has/is blooming for the second time, and now the pink is much much paler than the first flush. Also, the smell is much less, I have to get right in the bloom to smell it. And yes, it is getting fall, so I cut the sucker off, and have it sitting in a bucket of water, hoping to get nubies on it, and pot it up for a friend.
Can anyone give me a guestimate on size of pots for size of cutting? I remember someone suggested a tall pot, so the roots would grow down, is that so?
Thanks to all for the help and suggestions I have received, directly and indirectly (from reading past posts). Selma

Wow, Patrick, it sounds like they're all doing really well!
Not much blooming going on here right now, but after this summer, I'd rather them put their energy into growing anyway.

Anyhoo, looking forward to seeing those photos.

Can't wait to see your pictures. There will be very little to take pictures of around here now. All the spare brugs are gone. (cuttings saved for mailing) Those I'm going to hold over this winter are lined up in front of the garage and number 15. That is a lot less than I've ever held over before. I have one table with cuttings in the house. I really was serious about cutting back.

There are a few seedlings yet to bloom in the garden and some of those I'll be either digging up or cutting off at the ground and hope for rooting in water. My total will be less than twenty five when all is said and done.

It's almost time to call in the yard people to clean up after me. I'm really looking forward to winter and moving into the new year with new seedlings.

Yuk, almost end of the season is right. I am flirting with danger and putting of the magority of my cut back and all my lifting to after the weekend of Oct 14th as I have folks coming by to stock up for their addiction.Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

I have had a few broken branches I have stuck in the pond to start nubbing up, I have lifted 3 of the smallest Brugs ( about 3' tall and one has small buds) but that's about it thus far. I am waiting on the blooms on 6 2 year old seedlings before the cut back.

I have ...
-10 2nd year seedlings form German seeds to keep for
another year of trialing
-Exotica
-Enchanted Double White,
-Peek-A-Boo,
-Golden Lady,
-Native Habitat Double Orange,
-Maya,
-Butterfly,
-Rosabelle,
-Equador Pink
-2 Herrenhäuser Gärtens,
-3 Tiara X Versicolor Orange crosses with buds
-one Tiara x Butterfly cross ( double) that needs another year for evaluation
-a Butter Cream x Butterfly Cross ( I keep for the leaf shape)
-a Rosamond x L'amour cross that holds her pink and white
blooms almost horizontal and smells wonderful
-2 of a Rosamond x L'amour cross I registered this year
-a Whiskers x Ecuador Pink cross that has large flowering pure white blooms that has the most terrific fragrance
-2 of my own crosses yet to bloom
-2 other veriagated Brugs
I am sure I missed a couple and all these are mature Brugs not under 7' tall and currently fill my garden space.

Then there are the 27 seedlings I have from this years German seeds, currently in pots but need to be planted in the gardens somewhere next year!Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Something has to give BIG TIME here this fall with the current mature ones I hold over. I need homes for many and next year wouldn't mind garden staff either.Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Shirley, you are to be my role model!!!

Thanks Ruth Ann. I just had to do it. Next year may be a big cut back year again. I just can't keep all the seedlings, but if we know they are good and Monika agrees, I am sending them out for trialing. That way, I can just grow the cutting I need and grow more seeds. If it is registered, then those who already have it can pass it around. I can let mine go to make room for more seedlings. Growing from seed is my passion anyway. Real Estate is valuable during the winter months, so keeping big brugs and lots of them just can't happen. I've got about thirty seeds soaking and have ten other planted and I'm just getting started. This year my Alocasia Mac. gave me two seed pods, so I'm growing baby ears now too. On top of that I have a bunch of hibiscus cuttings trying to root. I don't know how successful that is going to be. I just came in from watering. It sure is easy when they are all in one spot.

Look at our forecast for the next few days. Unreal, if you ask me.

Monday: Partly Cloudy; High=90
Monday Night: Partly Cloudy; Low=64

Tuesday: Partly Sunny, Slight Chance of Showers & Storms Late; High=84

Wednesday: Mostly Cloudy early, but clearing somewhat; High=71

Wednesday is more like normal. It was so hot today that I had to turn the AC on again.

I turned the furnace on here Shirley.

We are to be from 70F to 52F this next week with rain almost every day but tomorrow. Those are the highs too, we are to get down to 40F in the nights as the lowest.

Well, you guys, I am still in the 90's for highs (of course it beats the heck out of the 100's) for the next week at least. And just when my brug blooms were beginning to last several days.
