Cuttings, etc.

October 29 2006 at 5:59 PM

Ok, after reading my post saying that I couldn't really talk about the new cuttings yet, my husband first said I made him sound like a tyrant, lol, it wasn't meant to sound that way at all... then he said it sounded like we were giving in to some silly superstition, in a way, we were. I just figured, whatever works, I don't care as long as they make it, grow.
So, we've decided that it's ok to talk about them, reasonably, none of the "I'm sure it's..." After all, you can never really be sure that any cutting will take and grow until it has, too many things can go wrong in the process.

First, going in order by date here, we'd like to say
many thanks
to Brenda, Shirley, Linda, Dott, Michele, and Debra.

I had planned on posting pictures with this, but yesterday was windy and rainy so the pictures are all blurry and dark, pictures later then...
Brenda, they're in 3 gallons and doing well. The variegation on AxelRose... well, pictures simply do not do it justice. L'Amour has been sprayed for the bugs, and the buds are still developing, I'm just not sure I should let them continue, part of me wants to clip them so she'll put that energy into growing first.

Shirley, most are in 4" pots and doing well, at the rate the roots are growing, I should be starting the transition to gallon pots next week. Some more specific comments...
On the three double pinks, Monika, DD, and PP. We had really only planned on having one of the three, and I know PP was tops on my list, still love the German spelling, but all three are doing well, and I think I like the leaves on Monika better, but shhh... don't tell the other two that, lol. There are actually two PPs, almost lost one, when it came down to whether or not the cutting was going to survive, I clipped the seed pod.
Gartenzauber x RoseBeauty, thanks to Jarie, I now know what the Gz something rose something somethings are. I think there are two, but I can't be sure of the second yet, the leaves are slightly different. They both have fuzzy leaves, I love the fuzzies!
By the way, zauber means charm, so Gartenzauber would be Garden Charm... how pretty! My husband looked it up for me, because I asked him what zauber meant.
The two lost tag's, I love the leaves on the one that says "Lost tag - Monika's." They're long, thin, softly fuzzy, and the newest ones are developing teeth. I don't know what the flowers are going to look like, but so far, the leaves are wonderful! The other one, you said was a pink, and since I could make out the letters IMA, we now call it "I'm a pink." The leaves on that one are long and thin too, also softly fuzzy like the other. Guessing they're not the same, maybe they are? Either way, I like them both, a lot. Fuzzies!
I still don't know how I got Popo out of White Pearl x Rubirosa, but the name has stuck, that one will forever lovingly be called Popo around here. I had my doubts about that one making it at first, but sure enough, it has roots and is keeping up with most of the others in growth rate. More fuzzies! (lol!)
Mountain Magic, there are two, we're keeping an eye on the new growth to see if it develops the corky stuff too, so far, they look ok, did she have a particularly rough summer? Anything odd happen? Or was it more of a poof, out of no where? Our little suave variegateds have similar cork on them, started when they ran out of space last time around. We found pictures of Suaveolens Variegata online with similar stems, not mentioned as a disease or anything, so we thought maybe it was just the way they grow? Could it be weather stress, or stress in general?
Rothkirch was slow to start, but coming along fine now. SuperNova (3 of them) and KBS (2) have taken off and are growing faster than all of the others. Guinivere, Pumpkin, Georgenpalais, the unmarked, 4 Harlots, 4 Mayas, and 5 ForeverMorrs are trying to catch up to SN and KBS, ok, they're not as huge yet, but they're growing strong. Wait, I think we're up to 6 ForeverMorrs, the last one finally grew a root last night, it's a small root, but atleast it has finally started. The others were among the first to grow roots, FM and ForeverMorr are the same, right?
The last bit of AxelRose is rooting on one side, rotting on the other, it's growing, we're trying to stop the rot. I don't know what to say about that one.
RK x Balao and Balao x ApQueen... did Balao pass on some hard to root genes or do those two want something different? We're 99% sure that RKxB is not going to make it. I think it may have cooked a bit too much in the bag, probably going to be asking for that one next year. BxAQ, there were three, the two little green ones never developed nubbies, now there's one, it has nubbies, it has had nubbies for a while now, it's driving my husband crazy, he's checking it 5 or more times a day, he's asking me to pull it out of the cup to check it almost daily! Perhaps I should remember that "watched pot" thing and tell him to stop watching so it'll put out the roots, lol! Seriously though, is there anything I can do to sort of nudge this one along?
And, Champagne Fizz, I don't know yet. Finally spotted a nubbie on the last one left, we're hoping, but not expecting it to make it.
I think that's all of 'em, Shirley... I can handle this many when it comes to taking care of them, but later in the recall, I might miss one or two, lol! But, you see now why I like to play the odds with duplicates, right? I can always find homes for the extras, share them back with the group when the time comes, but for most of the ones we lost some of, we still have atleast one.

Linda, Strawberry Creme is taking off, they're both in 4" pots and probably ready for gallons, wow! fast grower! Dr. Suess, both of them were a little slow at the start, and are still going a bit slower, but growing. I'm thinking a little extra food might give them a boost.

Dott, Golden Lady, Desiree, Butterfly, Tropical Sunset, and Jessi Noel all have roots starting, they're still in the cups, I'm letting them develop a little more before they move into 4"s. Tiara hadn't shown any roots, so I pulled her out this morning to check, there was a bit of mush starting, so we cut it off and put her in a little water... it's kind of odd, she's the one with the most going on up top, perhaps mis-directed energy.

Michele, Sunset, you were right, lots of roots! I put that one straight into a 4" pot, seems to be doing well so far, the newest leaves are getting bigger and there were new roots growing when I checked this morning. The shredded white dried out a little, so I put it in water to rehydrate. It looks like it's starting to nubbie, so I might keep that one in water for a bit longer. I messed up with Ecuador Pink, doubled up on it between you and Debra, oops, but if they all make it, more to share. We cut that one into 3, hope you don't mind too much... sometimes we have a problem with Ys, one side will shrivel down to nothing, making the whole cutting slow down in rooting, or sometimes not root at all. One of the top pieces nubbied before the bottom, the other hasn't yet, but they all look like they're doing well.
Also, while on this subject, I have a seed pod developing on one of the CGs I got from you, crossed it with Pink Floyd, and Candida Double White has a bud, well, actually 3! I'm excited, watching it develop, checking daily, will post pictures when it opens!

Debra, I know you were concerned about the thickness of Rosabelle and Creamsickle, but no need, pre-rooted, you've done the work for me, all I have to do is sit back and watch them grow. lol!
Ecuador Pink looks good, has nubbies. Peaches and Cream nearly floored me this morning. I knew it was going to be wet, I couldn't give any of the cuttings sun yesterday through the wind and rain, so I wanted to check and make sure the overly abundant amount of moisture hadn't caused a problem. Popped it out of the cup, broke some of the dirt away, and there, staring back at me was a root. It's been, what, two, three days, maybe.

Sidenote to Michele and Debra, I know I haven't written to say they're here, actually, I haven't done much with email lately... sorry about that... they're here, doing well, shipping costs are on the way, if it hasn't made it to you already, Michele, mailed yours the day after I saw the email with the amount, Debra, mailed yours the day after the box came, would have been sooner, but I couldn't remember if I had (or couldn't find) your address, so I got it off of the box. I will write email soon, I swear! lol.

Again, I say thank you to all of you! I hope you like the animated gif at the top of the page. (It's thank you in 6 languages... actually, the last one, Japanese, thank you very much.)

Sorry, long post here, but I told you I had a lot to say about them already, lol.

Wow, how do you do it? I couldn't remember all of that if I tried. I'm glad you have had good luck with most of the cuttings. I can tell you that most don't get 'Monika' to root, so you did very well. Champagne Fizz has sometimes been a rough go on rooting and if you got that many ForeverMorr's to root, that was a job well done. I have never tried to root Axel Rose. I wasn't impressed with the low numbers of blooms on her this year, so I have let her go unless a piece of her is rooting in the barrel in the garage. I will be anxious to hear about the cuttings from Monika's brugs once they bloom. I have my doubts that we will want to keep a couple of them. The RKxBalao is one that you will want to get a piece of again. It isn't the same brug as the named one, but it will have excellent genes for hybridizing in pink. I only kept one of each of the same cross of that one, and two others. They all looked so similar. I apologize to everyone for the lousy permanent marker I used. I'm sure it must have lost it's ability to remain permanent. Most times, I have no problem with Sharpies. It could have been a problem having so many cuttings in the plastic too. Much sweat may have helped them bleed a bit.

Keep up the good work. Lots of pictures next year will be so much fun.

Shirley, Thank you!
As for how I remember all of it, partly a list, partly, running out to recheck the list while in the middle of writing the long post. Oh, daily interaction with the plants, picking them up, telling them how much we them, etc., certainly helps.
Monika was the first of the three to show roots, and actually right there at the beginning of any of them showing roots. The ForeverMorr's, 6 out of 7, one upside down, lol.
All of the ones that are Monika's... I'm anxious, excited, thrilled, can't wait to be able to tell you all about them as they grow! Yes, RK x Balao, I really will want that one again, genes and all, you know.
I still say don't worry about the marker thing, whatever is still not known, I bet we'll be able to figure it out as they grow. Actually, as far as I can tell, there's only one that I still don't know, couldn't find a trace of mark on it, but the leaves and stem are looking similar to Georgenpalais.
If we ended up with some that you decided to let go of this year, and happen to change your mind and want it back later on, lmk, we should be able to get some back to you.

Thanks, but I'm going to be busy enough growing from seed and some other new ones I have. I doubt I will need anything back, but may have more to share. Summer will tell. We are to be 71 tomorrow and then we go down to highs of the 40's. The sooner we get through this winter thing, the sooner I can get started growing brugs again.

Lynne, sounds like you really have things under control!!
Shirley, why did you go and have to say Monika was hard to root?? LOL! I have her in water in a cool room. Both cuttings of her have rooted, even the green cutting. Now that she knows she is suppose to be hard to root, just watch, she gonna rot! LOL!

I'm impressed with Lynne .... way to go, girl!!! I had such a lack of success last fall with my cuttings, and I hope I remember what I did wrong so I will never do it again. Mine are looking good, so far. I have almost everything potted and ready to go into their little pockets for winter, and that is a good feeling. The good feeling will be complete when everything is in place.

Lynne, great description of the progress of your cuttings. Look forward to the pictures.

LOL loved the comment about your hubby but doubt that he'd cause any concern on the forum....he's too much into brugs to do that. He'd probably be a positive addition to the group. Thank him for looking up "zauber" for us because I was wondering about that myself...figured that garten meant garden.

I took pictures of my cuttings on Saturday but with the busy weekend we had, didn't get a chance to post them in my album. Plan on doing that today.

Continued GOOD LUCK with your cuttings, Lynne.

Way to go Melanie. I can only root her in the summer. Have had no luck in the fall. I have a lot of doubles now, so it isn't a big deal and I have a friend who has a big plant of her should I ever want to try rooting again. LOL!

Sounds like you are doing a wonderful job Lynn. It gives me a headache thinking of all those cuttings to overwinter. Tiara is a harder one for me to root. I don't usually get many to root.

Re: Cuttings, etc.

October 30 2006, 3:23 PM

Thanks everyone!
Carrie, Patrick, if all goes well, perhaps next time around, obviously not right away, not enough to make two cuttings, let alone three, and if you haven't already gotten her from elsewhere by then, I can get a couple Monika's started for each of you? If I can get them rooted and send 'em to you that way... at least you won't have to worry about that part.

Melanie, usually once there are roots, the chances for rotting seem to go way down... just keep doing whatever you're doing... sounds like it's working, "don't fix what isn't broken."

Jarie, his words, not mine, about him joining the forum, lol. By the way, last count, there are 8 CGxEPs, two more popped up the day after I said there were 6 so far.

Dott, good to know that Tiara might be a little tougher than the others. If she doesn't make it... hey, 5 out of 6 isn't bad, and there's always next time... I'm still hoping for 6 out of 6 though.

BTW, I'm looking forward to not only posting pictures of ours, but seeing pictures from everyone else too!

Lynne, glad the seeds are sprouting for you. Let's hope it's 100% and they produce something great. I haven't started any seeds and not sure I will since all the cuttings have arrived. Guess I have to draw the line somewhere and right now, I have to find places for the cuttings. One day, I'll try seeds again though.

Lynne, sounds like you're doing great with your cuttings. Congratulations!

Shirley(thank you so very much),all of the cuttings you sent me are doing great (even the trial brugs) and have shown some growth and little (very tiny) leaves are starting. MM is hanging in there, though not doing nearly as well as the others...(I don't think I am destined to have this brug - first the seeds didn't do well...)The only casualty so far, I'm devastated to say, is 'Monika'. (Patrick and Carrie, I know how you feel...) The poor thing didn't even have a chance. (Shirley, that's the one I couldn't identify the writing on).

Michele (thank you so very much), yours are all doing fine too. No 'victims' of my TLC yet. (Of course, we cheated - you sent them to me with some roots already started...)

Brenda (thank you so very much), yours all have nubbies and I potted them up today.

Ladies, I can't tell you how grateful I am. I now have more than one 'named brug'. (Linda sent me a Strawberry Creme cutting this past summer, which took off like crazy and had several hugh flushes.) Now if only they make it through the winter...I know, POSITIVE thoughts...

cuttings are doing great. They are liveing in the laundry room & will be getting a grow light for them today when getting some more potting mix.
Brenda
Butterfly& milk& honey are doing great& will move up to a qt pot today.I've trimmed the leaves off to help keep problems at bay& sprayed 'just in case'.
Shirley
everyone is fine& happy.B X GQ I only had in water for 5 days then it went in soil.It had started nubs.its been the one thats tried growing a bud and drops it.I've had 3 bud drops.I love Monikas leaves they are so fuzzy.Every time I clip one I rub my face with it.Daydreams is growing the fastest.Daydreams& PP have worm caseings mixed in the soil.I ran low on potting mix then so I got out my fishing worms& moved them from 3 different containers to 1 and mixed the caseings so could pot my cuttings that day.plus I also don't normally use AV soil mix,but was all they had that day.
Dott
Everyone is happy Versi orange nugget has shot a leaf above ground now its in a 4 in pot.cutting rooting proper end has 1 root and will be potted today.sunray had nubs when went in pot,but still no growth.maya looks just happy as can be& if find enough pots.....can get them 3 cuts out of one pot
Carrie
Marthas about the only one showing signs of nubs.I divided JY into 3 cuts& nipped a piece off for SIL.shes got a nugget

Debby
They will get to go in soil today.Creamcickle is growing leaves.everyone else looks the same, but they just arrived Fri-saturday.

Patrick
Charles is still in water.I planted your cannas out in deck bed behind seedling #2 & also see seedling #2 has'Y'd now.I think seedling #1s buds have stopped growing, but the plant has grown a few inches since they showed.I'd guess at least 4 inches.I just wish winter would stay away for about 2 more months.I wanna see these bloom.I just know when I cut their trunks they'll drop them buds.I've a mind to ask Melda to loan me her pump house cover for pool to cover with just see the buds.

I'm doing no cuttings in the Cold GH this year, though I only lost Carries BM last year. Then I'll be adding a few whole trunk cuts for growing so will have a few taller plants for next year.

KBS X Supernova seedling is doing fine.It will enjoy being up potted today. It hangs out with versi orange nugget& sunray.I also ordered me some seeds from seedbank, but will likely start them christmas.

Anyone wanting cuttings:
Frosty pink
Unknown pink
seedling pink
Dr Suess (possibly 8-10 cuttings skinny)
Please hollar.I'll keep them till christmas then off to Meldas they go.

I'm just THRIILLED with all my cuttings.
But Next fall,,,,,,,, I will need to propagate a few pairs of hands. But my summer will be so great.

Thanks everyone

Lynnne...with all of those new babies you are going to have one glorious garden! I am thrilled over the ones Shirley sent and all but one are rooted and begining to leaf out nicely. I was so sad that I lost Monika. I waited too late to ask Shirley about that one and I got down to about 2 inches of the very generous cutting and it was just too small to care by that time. I am so looking forward to the other ones. I can't wait until we are able to show Shirley pictures of our blooms!

Bren and the rest, sorry you've lost Monika. I guess I got the lucky cutting as she's doing fine at my house. Here she is at 3.5 weeks.

She's one of the first to be transplanted into a larger pot. Others, were Guinevere, Super Nova, GZ x RB, Day Dreams (Shirley), Tiara & Pink Beauty (Bren). These can be found in a photo posted in my album yesterday.

Next year, hopefully, I'll have Monika (and others) to share with the rest of you.

to everyone for the cuttings they shared with me this year! An update on their progress...

Shirley - Daydreams, Pink Perfektion and Harlot have all started leafing out. Harlot is in potting mixture and Daydreams and PP are still in water--will pot them today most likely

Bren - Painted Lady is looking great! She gave me a scare a few weeks back, but pulled thru and is growing well.

Lynne - The peach cuttings you sent have all leafed out and growing FAST! They are all in 1 large planter right now and I may separate them into separate pots soon.

Ruth - Adora is getting nubbies and I think some growth is starting - will pot them up in another week.

Michele - Grand Marnier, Miami Orange Glow, and Equador Pink are looking very healthy and growing great--you can check them out Sun

Kathy - Elvis is doing wonderfully! So glad he made the trip safely this time!!!

Can't wait for blooms on all my new plants--will be exciting watching them grow and bloom next year. I will take some pictures of these and post them next week.

Thank you all again for sharing. Next fall I will have alot of varieties to share with the group if they do well through the winter and next spring/summer.

Here's my cuttings in laundry room.I'm sure hubby will figure out soon the real reason the chair went in that room was so I'd have someplace to fold clothes!**If you had seen the look on his face when he seen it gone from liveingroom....he thought I was nutz then.**

Edited to remove wrong image codes, see my post lower down for the images please.

This was Knighttis last flush.it rained the next day.then the wind blew& they looked trashed. Its still got buds, they should turn down in a few days.

I clipped PP top and have it rooting.I figured I could squeeze at least 5 more in there somewhere if change pots.

Attaching Photos

November 2 2006, 12:52 PM

Joy, the method you used to attach photos to your post didn't work.

I want to suggest to everyone that you use your PREVIEW button before hitting the RESPOND button, especially when adding pics. If your pics don't show up during the preview, they're not going to show up in your finished post either. Unless you're pretty saavy with HTML code, I'd suggest you don't try to "fix" the failed entries. During PREVIEW you have a MODIFY option. Delete the pics and attach them again.

I strongly suggest using Photobucket, and especially the THUMBNAIL option. Ruth Ann recently showed us again how to do this, when helping Christal.

Noids... lol, I like that one, Shirley.
"I remember you saying that you didn't care if they weren't marked."
Still don't, just wanted to let you know that we had been thinking they might be the same, but as the leaves develop, they're turning out quite different.

And as for how I feel about ??? tags, mostly, doesn't matter to me, as long as it grows well and stays healthy, it's all good.
However lately, there are a couple that are annoying me. We found a house a while back, completely surrounded by Brugs, but no one was home to ask about cuttings. We kept going back hoping to find someone. Finally we asked a neighbor who said no one had been there in a year. We decided, why not and took a cutting from each Brug. Months later, they all came out to be the same white, "unk. white from the house," all except one, it's still "??? from the house." I just want to know if it's the same as the others... lol.

By the way, the ??? new cutting, along with several of the others, have buds, so unless they drop, we should have pictures for you before the end of the year.
