A newbie to this forum

Hi. I'm Karyn. I live in Maryland and have only been growing brugs for about 4 years. I've always been an avid gardener with an interest in tropical and sub-tropical plants. Not a good thing in my zone. lol I started off with a few of the old standard brugs (Chas Grimaldi, Frosty Pink, etc) and really became interested in other varieties two years ago. I started playing around with cross-pollination and have come up with one nice flower so far. My knowledge of brugs is still pretty limited and I'm looking forward to learning more about this beautiful flower and getting to know you all.

Welcome Karyn. Your area is so beautiful. I have learned so much by reading all the old post and keeping a copy of any how to's that are posted in my AT file. I am looking forward to seeing your gallery pictures. Cj

Hi again. Thanks for the welcome. I'm in Montgomery County, MD, the Ashton area. Where are you located Dott? I see quite a few zone 7's here.

Can we post a pic in a new/old thread or do they need to be posted in the gallery? I haven't had a chance to look around much yet. Between the kids, pets and plants I usually don't get to the computer until the evening.

Hi Karyn...glad to see you found your way here. As you can see, new members are VERY welcome. I'm sure you'll feel right at home in no time.

As far as posting photos...well, we're a little loosey-goosey here about that. The way it is "supposed" to work, is we'd like each person to have his/her own album in the Photo Gallery and post most pics there, keeping verbiage to a minimum. Then author a thread advising you've placed pics in your album. Other members then make comments or ask questions in that Main Forum thread. Photos placed in a thread/post are supposed to be for the purpose of enhancing what we are writing about...an illustration, as it were. But as I say, we sorta stick pics in the main forum sometimes when they should be in the albums. No one gets too excited about it though.

More important than where we post the pics is posting pics that aren't too big...please don't post pics larger than 400 X 600...and it is GREATLY appreciated if you post THUMBNAILS rather than full sized pics. Big pics really slow things down for the members using dial-up and large pics skew the width of our Message Text, making it necessary to scroll back and forth to read it.

I strongly recommend using Photobucket to store pics you want to transfer into our forum...they work very compatibly with Network54 and we have instructions available for anyone wanting a little "How To" assistance.

Again...welcome to the forum!

A hearty to you, Karyn. So nice to have you join the group and I know you'll enjoy every minute you spend here because there are some very talented brug growers who willingly share their knowledge.

We love to see each others' gardens/brugs so set up an album in the Photo Gallery soon. Your new hybrid sounds exciting. Are you going to try to register it with ABADS? Keep us posted.

Are you getting the impression we are all happy you joined us? Speaking as a fellow Newbie (last week), I can tell you this is a very warm, welcoming crowd.

I too would be very interested to see the cross polination you did. Did you have something particular in mind when you chose the two plants you used? Were there any surprises with the way they mingled?

I too, would be interested in more info on your hybridizing effort. Did you have more than one seed pod? How many seeds per pod? Did you grow out any other seeds & if so, what results did you see? I hope to do my first hybridizing next year.

You all have been so gracious and welcoming, thanks.

The only reason I chose those two to cross was because they happened to be the only ones that were blooming. Out of all the blooms I pollinated only two pods matured. My Frosty Pink and a Jamaica Yellow bloomed first this year so I got a couple pods from that cross. My doubles bloomed so late this season that I didn't bother trying with them. There wouldn't have been enough time for the pods to mature. I just play and really don't know much of what I'm doing. For instance no matter what I do with my Charles Grimaldi I can't get it to produce a seed pod. I recently started reading the ABADS site to learn more about them. I'm sure I'll have plenty of questions for everyone here.
