My Jamaican Yellow is about to bloom and it seems to blooms with split blooms each time. This bud is very weird looking. Does anyone have any idea why it looks this way?
This is how it bloomed the last few years
I have been trying to get another Jamaican Yellow to see if it will bloom correctly. Hopefully will find one in the spring
Hi Linda... Jamaica Yellow will often have shredded blooms such as what yours is doing now. As it grows and matures they will be less frequent but will throw a few in the weather change.
My Jamaican Yellow has looked like that the last couple of years. This began to happen after we'd been hit with the snow of Christmas 2004. I think I'm going to be taking it out as it's blooms are pretty infrequent and certainly not very attractive. I've tried to start cuttings to see if they might be different but haven't had any success with that either. They just won't root!! Apparently that plant is really messed up.
The same thing happened to one of my JY's this summer. The first flush was normal, second was shredded and the third was normal again. I only had 3 flushes from that particular plant.
My JY bloomed all summer right along with Charlie G. I was quite impressed with the flushes and number of blooms. Don't know what to say about yours not rooting, Jarie as every thing I stuck in dirt from JY rooted.
Interesting, Carrie. None of my JY have rooted. They just seem to shrivel up. Have tried them both in water and soil. Maybe I'll have a surprise one of these days.
The rest of my cuttings are growing like weeds and....I may be getting a bud or two on my Creamsickle. Sometimes they look like buds but turn out to be little leaves beginning to open. Will keep you posted.
I do have a single Dr. Seuss bloom, a pathetic looking Ecuador Pink trumpet that I think was affected by the cold temps over the weekend and a couple of CG thought to be.s
I don't know if it would work or not, but maybe some added light to lengthen the day and trick them into thinking the growing season has arrived would help. Seriously....I've never tried it myself.
I had posted a message about my JY having split/shredded blooms on another board. One of the responses was from someone who also had that happen and it turns out that was who I got my JY cutting from. So I wouldn't be surprised if your cutting has shredded blooms at some point.
Karyn
Karyn--perhaps we got them from the same person!!?? But I have heard of quite a few people having split blooms to some degree on their JY's. Possibly it is a hidden trait in JY's and only show up under various conditions.
Carrie--I might like to try a cutting of yours to see what it does in my climate. It really is pretty this afternoon and filled with quite a few blooms. The bees are having a field day in the blooms! Seed pods from this could be VERY interesting!
