The baby is dropping in the womb!!! Today, I watched Day Dreams off and on and the bud took on a rather "lumpy look"...seemed to be bulging slightly where it was very cylindrical & smooth for several days before and I think it's more enlongated. The sun was out today for most of the day and temps were in the 70's so I think that helped.
Anyway, I think we're gonna have a baby real soon. Will keep you posted.
I've been known to do C-sections on a couple of doubles and it doesn't help. Once a plant is producing deformed flowers, I'm convinced that it will continue.
All fun aside, that's an interesting item, Shirley, that once a plant has deformed flowers it will always have them. I just took out a Jamaican Yellow for that reason. For a couple of years, it was really nice but since the freeze a couple of years ago, it's had very few normal flowers so it's gone. Had to make room for the new ones. I hated to lose it but room is precious, especially right now.
LOL Linda, I agree. Patrick has "birthed" many a beautiful baby out there in WA state. His seedlings are to die for since mine didn't make it last spring.
By the way, Patrick, is your MM X U still hanging on? Can't wait to see it's blooms.
LOL...well, so far, no "birthing" assistance has been required to get the blooms to emerge from their calyxes ...strictly natural & solo efforts on their part!
Thanks for the compliments, btw. I do "mother" my seedlings pretty carefully.
Jarie, I think all my brugs (seedlings & otherwise) from last year are still ok in the garage. I'm due to get in there and water a bit again, but I'm not sure I'll be able to read all the labels & locate the MM X UNKNOWN plants...the pots are really crowded in there & in some cases, stacked 2 pots deep. It is a challenge to reach all the pots when I water. Next year, the entire (single car) garage will have to be ready to receive the brug collection.

Well Carrie, I'll keep an extra broom handy, just in case you show up this summer...you can help me clean! Then we can insulate the garage to save heating $$$ next winter. Gee, as long as I have extra hands, maybe we should put up wallboard too?! And then there's painting. You're much more used to heat than I am, so if it gets too hot in the garage, I'll let you keep up the good work & I'll have a little break with my iced tea in the shade. LOL
Shirley, I've always loved that movie...particularly the first part, before the war. Yes, Prissy was a hoot! And I loved Mammie.

That was one of my favorite movies as well. Perhaps a coincidence I named the new business "Scarlett's Signs & Design Studio"? I wound up with a pretty sandblasted sign I had taken down awhile back that said "Scarlett's" which I have to touch up paint on before I hang it.
Wasn't there a brug named Scarlett awhile back? Have not hear anything more about it.
You just hang in there, Patrick, and WAIT for me to get all that work done while you are sipping iced tea in the shade!!! Don't be surprised though when you get my bill!!!!
I've got lil buds forming on my Daydreams cutting.I measured bud to pot level too....so will be raiseing it up a pot today too. I've had good weather for 2 days...........so my plants are outside, but I'm bringing them in now. They got their rain....I fertilized them& up potted 4 yesterday.Worked on the hex bed for one group of them and will be real sweeet this weekend cause need to borrow someones time for 15 minutes with the tiller.I'm on the way to go get more 'manure'.
We're getting closer! The big delivery day is near. The calyx is finally open and I can see about 1/2 inch of the new baby. It took a few days of warmer weather for it to progress along. This morning it's sunny and warmer so I suspect it will be in full bloom tomorrow or the next day. Will keep you posted.
Oh my...and Day Dreams doesn't like high winds, at all. Hope she makes it through it all. Generally, her deliveries are pretty easy. Crossing my fingers that she makes it through the stormy weather.
Good luck to all you gals who have them outside!!! Mine are still safely tucked away in their respective places. They are safe - I am the one who finds this unbearable!!
Oh boy, and she's in the ground. Will have to figrue out something. Of course, we have high winds often so hope DD learns to deal with it. Maybe I can find a more protected area for her.
Great suggestion, Linda. Something of that sort should work, although, my hubby is telling me that it's to be in the 40's so she should be able to endure that. It's the wind that might be damaging.
OK...just covered DD and my Creamsickle from Ruth (3 buds, 15 inches tall) with large plastic flower pots weighted down. This should protect them from the wind.
Day Dreams has about 2 inches of bud dropped out of the calyx now. I'm afraid that if we have rain and a dreary day, she might not be completely open yet tomorrow. Had hoped it would be a nice Valentine's present. We'll see.
I finally put Daydreams in the ground, at the front of Angel Island, she is perking up and getting some good color. Its taken quite awhile for it take hold, maybe it will take off this Spring and I'll have some blooms to show. Mysti Morning and UConn Treasure have set buds. I'm putting Amarillo Paja, Tiara and Adora in the ground today.

Nature, in order to be commanded must be obeyed. Sir Francis Bacon
These were taken over a 3 day period. This bloom has been about 2 months in the making. I think cooler temps have caused it to be more salmon color and, no doubt, the reason it took so long to open. Anyway, I'm thrilled as you can imagine to finally have her in bloom even though the bloom is almost touching the ground because the plant is so small

Oh Jarie, she is beautiful!! My DD cutting is still in water. We were in the teens again last night. NC isn't used to these type temps. this time of year!
Kathy & Lynne, hope you have results pretty soon, too. It's really a lovely..lighter than I expected but figure the weather may have something to do with that. Yes, was over two months in the making...half the life of the entire plant. LOL It's worth the wait, though. I have another bud coming along that is higher on the plant to maybe it will show better.

I am glad she finally made an appearance. LOL! The bloom is nice. Her calyx does seem to be tempermental during hot, cool, and windy spells. Next fall, she should really perform for you.
Shirley, she was a beauty and I enjoyed her for two days and then today, with the heat, she began to wither. Can you imagine 2 mos to open??
The bloom was about 12 inches long from the stem. The second layer didn't drop too much but I suspected that she didn't want to get her "underskirt" dirty, being so close to the ground. Yes, am really looking forward to more blooms as time passes. Another is pretty close, possibly in a few days if the temps stay warm.
Congrats Jarie! After she gets adjusted to the warmer temps I'm sure she will perform well for you and give some nice flushes.
I find that most of my pinks are lighter when the temps are cooler and when it warms up and there's more hours of sunlight they turn darker.
Yes, it was exciting, Patrick & Terry. I was a bit worried a couple of days ago when the wind really picked up. I put threes large flower pots around her for protection. I think it was anchored on pretty good though. The color stayed pretty much a peachy, almost salmon shade of pink. We'll see how it is in the summer time...if it can handle our extreme temps here in south TX.
One of my 3 Creamsickle buds fell off today from natural causes, I assume. I can see that new plants probably shed some buds as they are developing. You just notice it because there are so few and anxious for them to open. I'm learning to be patient.
Beautiful photos. I have daydreams also. It just opened up its first bloom yesterday. It has a nice fragrance, sweet but not overpowering. It started to darken up last night (get pinker) and the inside skirt is starting to come down now and open. It is a little pinker today than last night as well.
When is the best time to collect pollen on these doubles/triples, should I wait till the inner skirt opens itself or cut a slit and just go in there (so to speak)?
SJN, I had to slit my double white because the inner skirt stayed way too tight to allow me to get to the pollen. Never had any pods take so not sure if that worked or not. Did access the pollen, though.
My buds are small still.I know they've grown cause looked back at picture.I did worry the other night when we got to 38 I thought the buds would drop, but all was well and we made it through the windy days ( with a few blow overs and adjusting spots)my current leaves are now all outdoor leaves grown cause have stripped then since being out.
Jarie. Most my brugs survived the hurricane cause I stripped the leaves. Some of the blooms even stayed open durring the hurricane...but had that 3rd day look about them afterwards.
Actually, Joy, I think the brugs like the upper 30 and 40° days, especially if it's sunny. Now freezing's another story. Of course, they grow faster when warmer. Glad yours were spared during the hurricane. Probably a good idea to take the leaves off during those conditions because they'll get whipped around a lot less.
Your B. Daydream is very lovely ! I can remember when the first bud on mine opened and how excited I was. Mine is setting buds now in the greenhouse, so I am going to be anxiously waiting to see it again this year. I have Shirley to thank for mine and it has brought me so much pleasure.
Patricia, DD is certainly an eyecatcher. Mine is about to bloom again and I can't wait. This time, the bud is higher on the plant so it should show better. I have Shirley to thank as well, along with all the others that she sent me. Enjoy your greenhouse DD.
