Well, my Vixen finally decided to bloom! I am hoping the color will darken a bit in a day or 2. Will take more/better pics then
Yesterday I decided to finally paint the back deck-I had moved everything off the deck 2 weeks ago! Another project finally done (Other than moving stuff back!)
Got lots of projects planned for the next month, weather permitting.
Beautiful brug and the deck looks great. You want to come over and spray a few coats of Thompson's on mine? You don't even have to paint it, just seal. lol We do it every two or three years and it's such a PITA!

Your Vixen is looking great. Hope you'll snap more photos and let us see how she looks when she's full of beautiful flowers after all those blooms start opening.
I like the color you chose for your deck, can't wait to see how it all blends in with your house, and the rest of the place out back.
I like the way your plant is blooming, like it has a cap of blooms. Very nice. The color of your deck boards is cool. I've always had brown, but I'm liking the red look a lot.
Vixen is still looking good, although a paler color than expected. We are due for freezing temps this weekend, so I will be lugging all the plants to the greenhoouse. One more time!!
Very pretty Linda ! I have tried to grow Vixen for three years, and I always lost it for one reason or another. This year it looks like I have one that is going to do good. I am excited to see what it does here. We get really hot in the summer and have cool Springs and Falls.
So very pretty, Linda! You have my sympathies about MN. She zotted me again last night, and with the most ferocious wind (my least favorite part of winter), and it looks as if it will blanket all of Texas AGAIN. I don't know when I have ever been more ready for Spring!!!!
Carrie--it is heading our way! We are due rain, high winds and freezing weather.
I think we are all ready for a change! Spring, with showers as needed, summer with afternoon rain, and not unbearably hot, lots of blooms and "outside time"!
Shirley, I forgot to add that we are to be barely above freezing tomorrow - our average for this time of year is 60 degrees--- will it never get here to stay????
Those low temps must be hard on people who don't usually have to deal with cold and snow. We ended up with 5 inches of snow and now the wind is drifting it. We are supposed to have wind chills near 30 below zero either tonight or tomorrow night.
I know the weather forecasters are predicting doom and gloom but....every year I wait for the robins and waxwings to come through and then I know there will be no more freezes. Well, they came through last week! So, I find it difficult to believe that it is going to be as bad as they predict. I sure hope that the robins and waxwings aren't wrong this year!

I can verify that it is NOT always a true predictor, as I had robins two weeks ago, and we have yet another HARD freeze, and the robins are nowhere to be seen. I have not seen the yellow waxwings as yet, and since my pyracantha is still full of berries, assume they have not come through as yet. Sorry, Michele, as the saying goes "all signs fail in dry weather", or COLD as it were.
Michele, I just saw you have a hard freeze warning up for tonight....
Quote:A HARD FREEZE IS EXPECTED INLAND WITH MINIMUM TEMPERATURES BOTTOMING OUT IN THE MID 20S. THE DURATION OF THE HARD FREEZE WILL BE 2 TO 4 HOURS. A LIGHT FREEZE IS EXPECTED ALONG THE RIVER AND AT THE BEACHES WITH MINIMUM TEMPERATURES THERE AROUND 30.
Well, the first time in 10 years that I've been recording the robins and freezes, I did get a very short freeze in the backyard. The bird bath had a little ice in it and the leaves of some my taller brugs got bitten by the frost but no major damage. The small brugs in the ground were not effected as they were protected by larger trees. Surprisingly, my orchids don't look in the least bit effected!

Today I finally saw one of the robins that wintered over in Iowa this year. There is a flock of about 8 that use my neighbor's cedar trees to sleep in and their bird bath has to be refilled every day. Yesterday, my husband saw a bluebird. These two species of birds are rarely, if ever, seen in Iowa when we have such cold temps that we have had and snow on the ground as deep as it is. Today at 35, we are feeling like it is a heat wave.
I hope we are winding down on these wintry temps for all of us. Weatherman says we may near 80 next week. That will give me a chance to get my roses pruned, and a lot of trimming done. I can hardly wait - just let me at 'em !!!!
Shirley, good to hear that you're finally having a heatwave at 35°.
Carrie, have fun trimming the roses. Mine have been blooming up a storm. My double Delight has really been beautiful the past week, followed by Chrysler Imperial. Spring is on the way!!
Weatherman says we will be in the 70's approaching 80 for the week. I so hope he is right. ! I have SO much I need to get done, and what wonderful weather to do it in. Maybe we will be past the freezes until our Easter snap - we have it every year!!!!
Jarie...2 of my favorite HT roses! I like roses with fragrance, before any other attribute. Another of my top choices is Sheer Bliss. And then there's Don Juan....and ....and....and!
Carrie, I'd have to work fast! By the time the temps are in the 80's I'm pretty much looking for a place to sit in the shade! Now, give me 55-65 with sunshine and little wind and I'm good to go.

I've placed Day Dreams in the same bed as Double Delight and Chrysler Imperial. Guess you would call it my "premium feature garden" as these are my favorites.
