I just took out an old "wishing well" that "used" to be gorgeous cedar until I rented out my house for 5 years and the tenants PAINTED it! and made a PLANTER! with 4' of beer cans at the base and topped with dirt! Needless to say it rotted out! and it was ALOT of work to demolish the WW and bag up all the cans (16 bags!) I am now exhausted!!!
I have a Hibiscus hedge around the WW that I would keep trimmed to just below the top of the well area. I need Ideas of what I can put in the center that would be taller than where I keep the height of the Hibiscus (about 3') The center area is about 5' across - I have a small area to access the center. Any and all suggestions are so welcome! I had thought posible of putting in 3 brugs of various colors, but think they might eventually be too crowded

Castor bean plants work well in a lot of places, but could give too much shade. Maybe a Cassia plant would work if yellow would work into the color scheme okay. I'm sure there are tons of things that would work, even a tall double datura or two might be nice.

Thank you for all the wonderful ideas! I had originally toyed with the idea of putting a brug (or 2!) in the center area but since it gets both morning and afternoon sun, I need one that would handle that much sun/heat. Which ones can tolerate that much sun? I also like the idea of the dark leaf cannas flanking the brugs. (I have the double red Hibiscus which needs pruning again)

Linda,
The Miami Orange Glow that I gave you can take all day sun, that's the one I have planted in my rose garden in the front yard. I've actually been considering the idea of removing that one and putting a lemon tree in its place. How soon do you need to plant something? I haven't made up my mind yet but if I found a reasonably priced lemon tree that was at least 4' tall I would remove the MOG, I'm a little tired of it being up there.

My favorite are Grimaldi and honey suckle or night bloomng jasmine.
That is what renter do. I got out of the residental market for this reason. Much cheaper to do multi family units. Hard to tear up an apartment landscaping.

Well going to work on the area tomorrow. Putting up an arbor with 2 trellis behind it and an opening in hedges for access. Will put a potted brug on a table in center and start some vine seeds in planters to climb up the arbor and tellises. Will see which potted brug likes it best there then plant it in the ground once it gets the height I like. Michele--does your lime green potato vine climb? I would like some cuttings for 2 pots, but might want to do some up the arbor as well. What are your thoughts on this?

Linda,
I believe it will twine its way up if it has support, I've not grown it that way but you're welcome to cuttings I have a lot of it from last year.
