My potted brugs were wilting so badly from the heat, and the soil at the top of the pot was getting dry so soon after watering, that I dug up some moss and put it around the base of one brug "test pot".
Is there any reason I shouldn't do this? Because it really seemed to help keep the moisture in - much better than mulch. The plant I tried it on didn't weep in the mid-day heat as the others in the same location did.
What do you think? Is there any reason NOT to do this?
The only problem might be if it gets soaking wet and stays that way while touching the trunk of the brug, like during a several day rain. I've not had experience with rot from having the moss around the brugs, but a soaker hose caused rot on two or three brugs a few years ago because it was touching the main stem. I didn't even think about moisture staying in the hose after the water was turned off. I've used wood chips as mulch and it worked very well. Don't be afraid to use the moss. I would think it would work just fine, especially since we look at our brugs daily and watch them for anything strange happening.
Using this to test a weather sticker. I hope it works, but I haven't been having good luck so far.
Okay, someone tell me what I'm doing wrong. I'm adding to my signature, just what it tells me to copy. If I remove the excess...that doesn't work either. RA...help!! LOL!
Then you can send it on my way, Shirley. Good news, though, my new well is up and running to the tune of 15 gallons per minute. That will be enough to run my sprinkler system again ---- whoopee and goshdarn!!!! I am excited !!!!
That would have me excited too. I have to pay for every drop of water here. Jim gets upset when the water bill goes up, but his brother told him that during the summer, their bill in Texas is around $200 a month. Jim shut up. LOL!
Oh, mine would be much more than that if I had to buy the water, Shirley. Our water company can run a bill up before you have any idea what hit you. As for the excitement I feel about this --- it just simply means I will not be dragging water hoses 12 to 14 hours a day just to keep things alive --- I think that is just cause for celebrating, don't you????
Absolutely, Carrie and think of all the spare time you will have to do so many other things that will also excite you. By the way....I put a few more pictures of hibiscus in the gallery. They are keeping me going this hot summer.
