Deformed Creamsickle Bloom

One of my Creamsickle's is in bloom again and has a deformed flower. It looks like a single but deep in the bloom there's a few little parts of the inner skirt. The outer skirt is also deformed. I wonder if the remainder of the blooms in this flush will be normal? They've always been normal in the past.

Karyn, I'll bet it's a solitary incident unless it's brought on by an environmental influence that's still present. I imagine there are things that can happen to a given flower in its early stages that cause it to deform as it develops. I've had only 1 bloom on my Day Dreams and it had a "streak" down the length of the corolla that failed to develop properly & turned brown & ugly before the bloom was spent. It was a single blossom on a cutting from last fall, so I'm waiting for more blooms...but I expect they'll be normal & I'll bet your Creamsickle will now throw normal flowers.

BTW, my Creamsickle cutting from last fall has its first bloom open. The marking on the tag that came with it was not indelible & it's been a "mystery brug" until it bloomed. Sure is a pretty thing!

I'm finding that the doubles in my yard have not been opening properly this summer and I've felt it was too much rain, excessive heat and dry conditions in between. They seem to turn brown and don't open fully. Sometimes the buds are deformed or drop off completely before opening. I'll be anxious to see how they do this fall when conditions are better, hopefully.

Singles have faired much better when the slugs, snails and worms leave them alone. Some of those blooms have been enormous, especially Cotton Candy, Super Nova and Adora.

I've felt fortunate to have brugs in bloom almost all summer, unlike last summer when it there was less rain and much hotter.

I'm not sure what happened to this plant but it appears that all the blooms will be similarly deformed. Three more have opened on different branches and all look the same. I have had other varieties that have an entire flush of screwy flowers (Jamaica Yellow had shredded blooms) but they did return to normal with the next flush. I guess I'll have to wait until next year to see if it will go back to normal. I have another Creamsickle that came from this plant. It's starting to bloom and has normal looking double flowers.
