This was one of the starts I received last fall, and it is still alive, but one of my frailer ones. Does this one need to be out of sun, cooler, warmer, more fertilizer, less?? It seems all my others are doing very well, growing nicely (and the slugs think very tasty); and this one is green, but seems wilted, the stems are softer, and some of the green leaves do not stand out so stiff as the rest. Any help appreciated. Thanks
Maybe you should check her roots to make sure they are nice and white/cream color and not brown or black. It sounds a bit like she could be too wet. Wet roots and cool temps don't go well together. I don't have Monika anymore. It's hard to make room for new ones without getting rid of some of the older ones. LOL!
I got both Monika& Daydreams from fall cutting swap.My tags faded...my tag didn't get lost(just words)The other is suppose to bloom this week, looks Monday or Tuesday. The one that bloomed, yes it opened green then turned pink.its 1st flush was at a hot time& lasted briefly(I don't think they care for heat index of 112)Its grown in 5-6 hours of full sun,but think the other may get a lil less sun due to banana trees.I'm thinking of trying growing in a more shaded spot next year, but will still have it return from own root and see how next year goes. Its 2nd flush-duo.had been nice all week, then decided to be 94 heat index of 106.so hopefully the next buds will bloom on a cooler day.I'm hopeing to squeeze 2 more flushes in.
Joy, I don't get as hot as you, of course, but I have one Day Dreams in full sun in the ground and it has bloomed twice. I have another in a black pot that gets some over head sun for about three hours and it is just now setting tiny buds. A friend has her's in morning sun and it is gorgeous, but she hasn't been as hot as us. So, nothing makes much sense with this brug. Cool and wet, in a pot, in Wisconsin morning sun only, and she blooms. Hot and dry in Iowa and she blooms in full sun, but not a shaded pot. I don't know what to try next for the potted one unless it is full sun and a white pot. I have often wondered if the plants from seed pods produced in one climate could possibly not grow as well in another climate. Monika probably has a climate much like Wisconsin. It can get hot as heck in both places, but the nights might be a bit cooler than nights in Iowa and definitely cooler than in the south.
The other plant has bloomed now.
1st two pictures are it.
The remaining pictures are from the other plant its last flush. Its 71 this morning& will climb to 91.Maybe next year it will do better with haveing more roots& maybe the salvia will shade the roots next year. This is also this beds 1st year growing.I'm not going to grow the banana trees that fruit in this bed next year, just the one hardy one and its going in a different spot.
They say seeds should come from your climate area...but I trade and get seeeds from all over the US& Canada& UK .It hasn't mattered WHERE I get foxglove seeds....they just don't grow for me.
Well I've played with my pictures from winter cuttings.I really miss my camera program that came with my crappy Dell, but setting as wallpaper still enlarges enough for what I needed to know.
So NOW we know Daydreams has bloomed twice and this is Monika blooming now.
She bloomed for 3 days, then dropped her flower, but it stayed pink on the ground for the 4th day.I'd say she handles the heat better than daydreams....but shes in more shade due to banana leaves& she gets fanned with those leaves when the wind blows& shes blocked from most of the afternoon sun.I've removed some banana leaves & should be cooler for her next bloom.
