Call them what you will, do you count how many of them a brug bloom has? I hope I'm not the only one who does! I haven't paid any attention to the number of points on double blooms, but every time a new single cultivar begins to bloom, I'm checking out how points there are.
So...question: does anyone have a Pink Velvet currently in bloom? My cutting from last fall has its 1rst bloom opening and there are only 4 points! All my other brugs have always had either 5 or 6...and I have a Harlot that had some 5's and some 6's on the same plant. Maybe it's a late season phenomenon to have only 4?

Hmm, interesting observation, Patrick. I don't check every bloom but don't think I've ever seen a 4 point. Would be an interesting photo once it opens fully. Post one for us, please.
I just went outside & checked & all the flowers I can see on Pink Lady & everything else all have 5. Do you have a picture of the one with 6, I'd like to see that?
Linda, you may have to look closely...I didn't take this pic to emphasize the 6 points, but in its 1rst flush (early Aug.), the plant had 3-4 blooms with 6 points and an equal number of blooms with 5 points. I believe I have another brug that normally blooms with 6 points, but I don't recall which one it is.

Well, wouldn't you just know it !!!! I'll be out there bright and early tomorrow counting to see how many my blooms have ---- never even thought of this, Patrick, but now you have the wheels turning.
I don't usually think to count them unless the bloom looks unusual for some reason and then I may take a closer look! I like the color on your photo Patrick
Digital cameras are funny beasts, when it comes to color representation. Mine tends to "enhance" colors in the red family, sometimes making them a bit richer than reality. I have software that I can use to tone down the color, but my monitor is darker than average...so I hesitate to modify colors and/or brightness, as other computer monitors aren't going to display the pics the same way. Add to that, the fact that many brugs change color intensity based on such factors as sun light, heat & maybe fertilizer levels. Harlot has been one of those for me, but I can tell you it's color was close to this at the time I took this pic.

Your picture of Harlot is pretty close with the color. I've had this one be pale pink and I've had it turn a dark coral. I think I could safely say that Harlot changes color more than any other brug I have. Mine hasn't done well this year, so maybe next year she will show off again. As for the number of points on brug blooms, I've seen up to ten on one flower, but when they do that, they can't support the skirt of the flower well and tend to stay folded more. Mother Nature at work again. I had one flower years ago and I don't remember the name for sure, but think it was Marrakesch, that had four points consistently while it was cool out.
I did it - I counted tendrils on the blooms that I have open --- most have only 5, but I did run into some with six - and these were on the same plant. I will be watching this more closely in the future.
I think I count most of them, especially if I notice right away that they look different. When there's an oddity it's usually extras, up to 10 so far. I'd like to see a picture of your 4 pointer as well.
Patrick, digital cameras in general don't handle the red part of the spectrum properly. With mine, darker reds get splotchy while brighter reds take on an odd glow. It's like CDs not being able to handle the full range of sound that records can... newer technology, more convienent, slightly less quality.
I have counted on some of mine off& on over the years. This year had seedling pink-whiskers x butterfly give 2 blooms with 7 points.I count them on unknown pink alot cause some flowers are huge where others are smaller or narrower ( but was thinking temps may caused that or moisture levels )I think i've seen a photo posted somewhere of a 10 point brugmanisa it was white.
Here's a pic of my 4-peaked Pink Velvet. This is the 1rst bloom for it, so I have no idea how much darker the pink would have been earlier in the season...most of my colored brugs are blooming much lighter colors now.
I was out in the garden at 12:30AM with a flashlight, checking out the brugs and enjoying the fragrance. The full moon was out, so I turned my flashlight off to enjoy the ambience. I'm sure my neighbors think I'm dingy!

Well, Patrick. the neighbors might think you're dingy but WE CERTAINLY DON'T. Been there, done that many times myself. Usually, first timeres open in the evening anyway so it's the best time to catch them, especially since we're always so excited about "the first time".....LOL
