Shipping cuttings to Canada

Someone from another board is requesting cuttings and I was going to offer her some of my NOIDS but noticed she was in Canada. I thought I would ask first before getting into something that might be a problem. I don't need any new problems. LOL.

Suzie

I recently shipped several cuttings to Canada priority mail ($16.00 for the box). I also received a few in trade from Canada! The post office clerk said as long as they did not have soil - they could be shipped. Go figure! On the customs form I listed them as a gift & when asked what was in the package I clearly wrote 'Brugmansia'. Simple enough! But then - who knows when it comes to the post office??

I've also shipped bare root plants to Canada but I really don't know if it's legal or not.

It is illegal, but if you can find a seller willing to have the inspection of the cuttings done and you be willing to pay for the phyto, there is no quarantine time for cuttings received down here from CA. I will tell you that a long time ago, I had some illegal cuttings sent to me from Canada. The package got stopped at the border, the cuttings taken out of the package, and an explanation put in the package along with a slap on the hand, and it was sent on to me, complete with the tee shirt that was marked on the declaration of contents. I felt at that time that my name was probaby on a "watch" list, so we didn't try it illegally again.

Please notice, I'm talking about it being illegal to send cuttings from Canada to the US. Not the other way around. I wasn't totally clear about that when I wrote the above.

This is my understanding of the law

It is NOT illegal to ship soiless cuttings from the USA to Canada.

It is however illegal to ship from Canada to the USA
It is the American import and custom laws that prevent us (Canada) sending to you ( USA) without sanitation certificates.

Having said that, you can still run into a badly informed Canadian customs official and have the cuttings seized and destroyed at our border.

Here is a little reading material that might help you decide what to do when shipping to or from Canada. Only parts of it will apply.

Thanks everyone. I'm still not sure what I'm going to do, but I think it may be more than I want to wrestle with right now. Maybe I'll feel more adventuresome later. LOL.

Suzie, I just sent some cuttings to Canada recently myself. There is nothing illegal. If you print the shipping label online through USPS.com it makes it easier to do. The $$ for priority is higher and usually takes 6-10 days for them to recieve. It was easier than I thought and nothing illegal about it.

Recieving into the US is where the hassle comes in.
