Holy Cow--Seedpods in January

January 17 2008 at 6:55 PM

  (Login jas4141)

My Noid White(the pretty one that frequently has 6 points and has had a few 7 points) is sporting 2 huge seedpods, 9 inches long, a couple of smaller ones and two that I crossed with Creamsickle....in January....and there are several blooms on it right now. That's one Noid that I'm quite proud to have.

It's Brrrrr here in the Valley today. Stay warm everyone because I understand from a friend in northern WI that another frigid streak is on it's way

Nice pods, Jarie --- cool looking !!! One of my best bloomers this year was a noid white - has not always been my favorite "color", but it sure was a great performer.
And I am so ready for warm weather - all it takes for me is the first cold front, and I am ready for summer. We are in the mid to upper 20's at night and into the 40's during the day, but it is still cold to me. Shirley, please stay warm -- those are bone chilling temps !!!!

Because they are way under the plant that was laden with blooms for about 6 weeks, those two pods were almost that size when I first noticed them. Just hope they are viable, especially the ones crossed with Creamisckle. Yes, even though I said I wouldn't, I might chance growing a few seeds once they ripen.

Yep is surely is brrrrrr today, even here in the Valley.

Quite overcast, too, so there probably won't be much change. When I think of many of you who are in sub zero temps, I consider myself lucky to only be in the 40's. Stay warm, safe and remember SPRING IS COMING!!!

Jarie, you're colder than I am...that's rare! But not for long - we have a 3-day arctic cold front headed our way & will be seeing temps down into the 20's. My outdoor sangs might bite it this time around!

British Columbia is falling down on their duty...they're letting it in the back door, flowing westward thru the Cascade Mtns. via the Fraser River Valley. But so far, we haven't gone below the upper 30's.

Well, I hope it stays above freezing - I can tell you that the past few days have been miserably cold for me. The sun is shining today, so maybe my birdbaths will thaw so that I do not have to take water out there. Carl keeps telling me that they will drink from the pond, but they have sorta become accustomed to eating and drinking at the same spot..... !!

Thanks for that little tid-bit, Patrick ---- I don't even do that when it is warm outside. Guess I had better get out there and feed them anyway before I get mobbed when I do --- there are two feeders only with seed left in them, and they do so like to have their own little perch. Too, the bluejays, titmice and chickadees are out of peanuts.

Different weather today, Joy.....in the upper 40's , chilly and dreary. Think it may rain in the next few days and stay chilly. I'm not complaining because I know many of you are knee deep in snow and chilled to the bone with your zero and sub zero temps.

The past few days, we've been outside in short sleeves cleaning up beds, adding manure and fresh mulch that we purchased from our local recycling center. Things are looking a lot cleaner. Some of the new brugs that I put in the ground in the past month or so are coming right along. Hope some will be Ying soon and I get a glimpse of the new (to me) angels.

Joy, will be happy to share some of the UN x CS seeds when the pods ripen. Will let you know...or remind me lest I forget!! Senior minds have minds of their own.

Spring is coming, gang!!!

I know how you all feel. We have had rain almost daily for the last two weeks and when it isn't raining it is only in the 40's. We have cold arctic air hitting us right now and got down to freezing last night and will most nights this week. I am soooooooo ready for Spring. The only redeming thing about our weather is that between rain showers we have had a little sun which heats the greenhouse right up, giving me buds yeahhhhh. I have had three pods ripen this week and new buds starting to hold , which means I will be able to get some crosses to take. I am definately an outdoors person, so all this cold dreary weather really affects my moods, but a few brug. buds and seeing a few daffodils with buds on them gives me hope that Spring isn't too far off.

Lol, me too. We got into the 70's for a few days and I was sick the whole time and didn't really get to enjoy it. I am finally feeling a little better today. Its been really windy here. Glad the fires breaking out aren't close by. I got a Day Dreams with one flower that opened in the box so I pulled the anthers off it and rubbed them into a flower I had opening on my pink. Maybe I will get a seed pod! I bought an electric mattress pad today for my aching bones. Now I won't have to move the heating pad all over the bed when I am hurting, lol. I can't wait to go to bed as soon as it gets warmed up! Talk to you all later.

Hello Jarie & Gang!
Sorry not here so much...I miss you Caught my attention with the "seedpod in Jan" & all this bad weather.
First, I have one small seedpod - 3 1/4" long on my Rosamond for almost all winter now! Still green so I won't pick it off but maybe I should & plant the seeds huh? This is the worst winter ever I think...we are second to the most snow on record. Tired of shoveling! We just got more light snow today & it is in upper 20's tonight. One year ago we had 80* temp!
All the brugs are coming out of dormancy - new growth. They are in cool sunroom & seem to be fine. I just fertilized them for first time this year for a boost in growth. I cannot wait for these girls to put on their show!
My fiance' loves them (did I tell you he proposed Dec 22 & we are engaged?) Maybe because of Brugs intro last summer? LOL He never heard of them.
Anyway, I s'pose if I plant the seeds they will all come out to be white flowers from what I hear. I'm sure this one wasn't crossed with anything else.
Anyway, I'm glad the bad weather is almost over & summer on the way so we can all get rid of our colds & chills & enjoy the flowers!
Nice to be back here again! Took me days to load up my new DSL setup & it is not worth it -- just as slow as dial up

Hi Jarie, is that the white NOID you sent me a cutting of? It sure is nice looking. And the pod looks nice, too. How long has it been blooming?

Right now the only thing blooming in our yard are snow drops. They come the earliest, next will be my crocus. It's still too cold to work outside. I can't wait to start getting my containers ready for planting. Next week I'd like to start my seeds-tomato, morning glory, and whatever else I might want to try this year-like maybe eggplant.

You guys down south enjoy the nice weather.

Theresa, I'm pretty sure that's the Noid White I sent you. I have another NW but don't think I had any cuttings of it at the time. You'll be able to compare when it blooms. That white has been one of my best performers and so pretty. It's in bloom almost all the time. Those two seedpods are still not ripe and are as large as the big green cucumbers...amazing. Have no idea what they may be crossed with. The rest of the seedpods on this brug are much smaller. I've harvested a couple of them.
