I just want to know if dropping potted brug into the ground will still make it gain height and bloom, or does the brug need to be taken out of the pot and put into the ground?
I ask because my zone is 5b Canadian and thing like this can't be left outside come winter.

I regularly plant my brugs outdoors pot and all. They send roots out the many holes of the pot (yes, I drill extra holes in ther sides) and grow like mad all summer. Then when it's time to dig them up, they come back inside pot and all. I cut off any roots that are sticking out of the pots at that time. It works for me.
I am in Burlington ON. It would work better for you to plant them right into the ground in the spring and then dig them up in the fall, put them in a pot, cut them back and keep them dormant over the winter. This is how I do it and it works well for me. Where are you located , I am Zone 5b.
Am in zone 5b too, just past Hamilton ON. I'll still love to have a cutting off you in the spring if you have spare please? Since we are in the same zone, when is an ideal time to pot this in the ground date wise?
Email me in June and I will find you a rooted plant or a cutting to get you started. Also don't forget to watch Canadian Tire in April, Home Depot has also had them in boxes. To email me just click on my name.

Edited to say I plant mine in the ground the first week of June usualy. I have over 40 so too many for pots and they grow much better for me in the ground.
Plan on coming for a plant/cutting and a coffee when you come.

They are pretty muck still sleeping in their shed, some sre starting to send out shoots. At the end of April I will remove the insulation in there and let them get on their way. I am in Edmonton for a week at the end of April so need to keep them semi-dormant until I get back. I will contact you in May to come get one.
Hi all
I planted one inground - one in a POT with big holes in side - inground, & the rest stayed in pots. The one inground got huge! I will do it again this year. Was I s'posed to cut it back? I didn't - oh oh. What's the consequences?
They were all in pots in sunroom being semi-dormant till about Feb. I'm ready to take some out to get adapted to sun. Some are well leafed out. I can't wait!!!
I'm also in zone 5b

Looking good, you are doing well with it.
If you have it sitting all the time on the black asphalt it may get the roots too hot in the summer Micheal. You may want to move it onto soil or lawn.
I wish I had a magical answer for you but I don't. Yours is growing better than mine of the same cross and mine are no where near 'Y'ing yet. Once you see the Y you can start to expect blooms, likely withing a month.
Oooh no, don't give up! You WILL get flowers this year. Some of mine are Y'd & not flowered yet, but I know they will. 3 are starting their 2nd flush of buds.
I fertilize now once a week with M.G. 24-8-16 & that helps.
I'm worried about the Dr. Suess in a 5 gal bucket with big holes on sides & planted inground. Last year it did OK but it doesn't look good now. Knobby looking & not as many leaves, & they are yellowing. No sign of any buds on it. Anyone know what's wrong? I'm thinking of pulling it up.
Hello Ruth Ann.....sorry you haven't heard from me in a while. I joined the military and had to go off to basic training. I am now an officer, so didn't really have time to come on and post.
The wife did manage to send me some pics of the brug blooming thru summer, but I hope it's not dead as she didn't bring it in on time and the frost got to the branches. I have cut it down a bit and it's now in the basement.
If you have any cuttings from other types, I'll be interested

Most of us do the majority of our cuttings in the fall. I don't like to mail unless the temp is at least 40. Come back here often & learn about them, we are busier at different times. I am zone 5b too. I have dug them up & potted them to bring them in. I'm thinking about trying the pot in the ground method but I wonder about the roots that are left drying out faster.
