Looks like it's time to start a fresh round...the last thread was getting pretty long. Thought I'd stick my Valentine's greeting on here while I was at it.

Happy Valentine's Day to everyone. I got a kiss and off he went. LOL! Years ago I asked Jim to not get me flowers because I always had more than I could take care of. I don't need candy either...so we just get what we want, when we need it and enjoy the day however we can.
I thought key limes were rounder. This little guy has a "tip" at the bottom of it, and Mikey is NOT offering any clues. Okay, Mikey, time to give at least ONE clue !!!!
yup sally got it is cotton. this is what one looks like after it has opened. next time i put one up here i will logg in more often to check on it and give clues.
in gardening there are no failures only learning experiances unless of course you give up mikey in fl

I'll guess hibiscus again. Seems to be all that comes to mind lately, lol. My poor tropical ones have been battling those little sucking greenish color bugs all winter and I've nearly killed them with pesticide to keep them under control and from spreading to my other plants in the garage boo hooo.
I had to double check to make sure it wasn't related to Hibiscus, it isn't. Native to Brazil, flowers are smaller. Grows well in southwest Ireland, I think it would love the warmer areas of the pacific northwest.
I was partial to one peninsular south of that, would live in Cahirsaveen if I could. Subtropical climate that last had a frost in 1934, but never goes into the 90's either. Some really impressive gardens in the area.
I will go off to the edit program and give you more of the flower.
If you go back to the picture you will see I put more in.
I have one blooming in the plant room right now grown from cuttings from Patrick.
It is a beautiful dark pink.... but it does not look anything like this photo just yet --- it is not fully opened.
Ha! Check out this pic from the Hummingbird Forum. I know I saw it before, but had focused on the bird, not the plant. After making my guess, I happened on this pic again.
Hummers like the Abutilon, I have one hanging from the deck in the summer and a shrub in a pot close to the house also.
Would that be beebalm aka Moranda?
Yes, Sally...it's beebalm/monarda...you're very good at this game! I misplaced the full image, but all the red flower parts are obviously found at the top of what you see here.

I love this plant and grow lots of it. It grows best along the edges of my compost pile which is shady and rich in manure. I also grow it in hot sunny dry soil. After it is through blooming I cut it back right to the ground, it looks ratty if you don't.
I had a nice stand of Monarda for a couple of years, and then we got rain. I can attest to the fact that it does NOT like wet feet. That is a beautiful photo of yours, Sally, and agree with Patrick --- the hummer looks good, also.
Here in the Seattle area, we were extremely lucky to have a clear night & I had a good look at the lunar eclipse. When it was low towards the horizon, it looked smokey - I guess because of the earth's atmosphere. Later, when it was higher in the sky and still about 35% covered, it was beautifully clear.

Here in North Texas, we were fortunate enough to have patches of clearing so we were able to watch it develop. But we had a short time of seeing it once it turned red before the heavy clouds rolled in.
Hey!!!

Kylie
Yep, it was in the high 80's here today too. I sure wish I wouldn't have had to work. I'll be off Wednesday to take hubby for outpatient procedure. I hope the weather is nice and I can get outside some in the afternoon.
I was late finding an email for Kylie, explaining her need to be with her sister & asking that someone post a photo for her, so thanks Sally for doing that. I know we all hope for the best & quick results for you sister, Kylie & for you to be back with us.
Are the pictured flowers ageratum?

I will post the whole pic since this is rather rare to see at this size and I was the first to discover it after the lakes flooded last year so we will see if anyone can identify it.
No guesses? They are colonial organisms. If nobody guesses it by tomorrow I will put the name up. It was identified by wildlife biologists after I reported it to the game wardens. This was in a tree top that was submerged when the lake rose 40 feet during the floods last year. It looked like invasion of the body snatcher things, lol.
I guess it was too unusual, lol. It is bryozoa. It was all over the place and looked so gross but they said it wouldn't hurt you. It is always there but usually microscopic. Something about all the flooding and the heat made it grow to mostrous sizes.
I had never heard of them either until then. They had it in the news after I told them about it they had biologists hanging over the water intake by the damn trying to get samples, lol. They could have done like me and drove the boat right up to the submerged tree tops instead. I guess here they usually don't get that big. From a distance it looked like someone had put water balloons all over the trees, lol. I had to go investigate since I am so nosey but they looked so gross I didn't want to touch one.
