Lots of buds but leaf loss & yellowing (?)

Like last year at this time, I fert every 7-9 days & have lots of buds but lately getting yellowing leaves & lots of leaves falling. Only one bud fell, but buds are flowering.
Anyone know what's causing this? Am I watering too much? Too little? I water when they tell me - when they start to droop, & then give a good soaking.
My Dr. Suess -in pot -inground with big holes in sides, is not doing good. Losing leaves like crazy & branch ends rotting off. I don't water it much as they are not drooping.

Patty, it would not be wise for me to try to address these issues for you as our climates are so very different. I have to water every day, and during the heat we are experiencing now, twice a day. I, too, am having more leaves yellow this year than in the past, but I attributed it to the intense heat. I am just going to do the best I can with them until we get cooler nights to see if this will correct the problem. Good luck !!!!

Patty, I too am zone 5 and when it gets to be over 85F here my Brugs droop too even though they are all planted in the ground. This is normal for them to do in the heat, even though they are well watered. You will know they need a drink if those drooping leaves don't return to normal position later in the day and/or when the sun gets off them. That is when they need the drink. I wonder if you are watering them too much.

Thanks Carrie & Ruth.
I have one planted bareroot inground & it is doing OK. The potted plants are doing OK (although very thirsty lately). This one is in a 5 gal bucket with big holes on sides. I gave it a bigger shot of water today. Been treating it like a inground so maybe not getting enough water?
The one inground doesn't need watering so often (as potted plants), but this one might be behaving as a potted plant even though it is inground... I don't know.
Thinking of pulling bucket out of ground. I just can't imagine why it's not doing well. It might die.
I gave it a good shot of water today & if it still looks bad I will pull/dig it up. Thanks for the input.
ps...I tried rooting cuttings on this Dr Suess & even THEY rot before they get roots. Is Dr Suess hard to root or what?
Maybe I should get a gun & shoot it to wake it up LOL.

Patty, Dr. Seuss is one the hardiest, and easiest to grow brugs that I have. I have one inground in full Texas sun that was a trunk cutting from last November, and it stays full of blooms all the time.
The trunk cutting stayed in water all winter in my plant room, had many roots on it, and I planted it inground this Spring. I don't know what the problem could be, but why don't you try rooting it in soil?

I think this is the time that the leaves just yellow in the heat & fall off. Last year I thought I was doing something wrong but this is about the time everyone starts complaining about it. Since they are budding & blooming & look fine other than that, I don't worry about it anymore. I just pick them off so they don't look so odd. They are probably concentrating on flowers & not so much on leaves. If you notice, it is probably mostly the bottom leaves that are dropping. They will do that too if you overwater.
