Iochromas at Kartuz Greenhouses

Hmmmm, Kartuz must have just completed a round of Iochroma cuttings. The last time I checked, they were sold out on most of their I. cultivars, but I just checked and they're not sold out on any right now! They carry 9 of them...how's that for a temptation?!

OK Patrick, are these any easier to grow than "rear" brugs? At least they would be smaller and could be wintered in the house. Do they have the wonderful fragrance of brugs? Do they come in any other colors than red and "blue/purple"? [linked image]

Sorry Selma, no fragrance and limited colors...blues & purples, which of course are missing in brugs, seem to dominate the color options. There's also a white (Alba), which Kartuz doesn't seem to carry anymore. Hummingbirds will feed from at least some of them. And the Iochromas don't stay all that small. I have 2 of them and they will probably reach 5' tall by 3' or 4' wide this year - all new growth from the base! The plants are very handsome & I like the way the blooms are clustered. I can't really say they're easier for me to grown than brugs...maybe about the same.

I think they're a little easier & they don't get eaten up by as many things as the Brugs. I had one in a hanging basket when it was smaller. They will bloom most of the winter with a little extra light.

I have one that is now taller than the greenhouse, but it had lost all the leaves and died back quite a way when put in the greenhouse last fall.

Jody, what is its bloom status?

A side note....my NOL has its first 4 blooms open...she's quite amazing.

It has 4 bunches of blooms now. My Pink Perfektion has about 30 blooms, perfect for its first flush. MM and MT both have their second flushes now. Boy, am I having fun. Saw Sally's place yesterday and she came up here. She's going to introduce me to the Puyallup Farmers Market when she has some ready for sale.

I have a white alba.It gets its leaves eaten every time and looks horrible. Its pushed a bloom here and there through the heat.I killed a powder light blue one over the winter in GH& then killed the purple one after getting it through the winter.Least I seen that one bloom.it arrived budded. I've decided to stick with my one...one with ugly foliage is enough& tired of trying bug sprays that don't work on it...even neem failed! It looks better in the GH& I'm tempted to grow it indoors next summer.
