Yesterday was one of those events that could almost be missed, I am sure most folks did. In the afternoon the sun finally came out after days of cloudy weather. When I walked outside the office I noticed a few Red Admiral Butterflies coming out of Philly crossing the parking lot and getting confused under the eves of the building. When I went to my car to head home more were crossing the parking lot and there were more in every direction. Traffic was heavy during the first 15 miles of the commute home giving me the leasure to look around and never was I out of the sight of Red Admiral butterflies. All seemed the whole sky was racing north on a light south breeze. This continued the 30 miles home and when I grabbed a beer and sat by the garden with a neighbor towards dusk we watched many more pass by - at least I did because she failed to notice. There have been times in my park when 1000s have been on the trails, invasion years, but I don't remember ever seeing them spread out so thickly over the whole geography. In a couple hours I will be birding, butterfly numbers may well be distracting.
