They're fairly common, but we don't see them in our yard too often...interesting little butterflies... with a serious "snout". This one has been in our yard for 4 days, following around the bees that have been piercing the base of the cuphea and salvia blooms. It feeds from the slits in the base of the blooms... cool [linked image]

Hello Bud,

Awesome pics! I was hoping to see one this year here in our gardens. We've had 33 varieties this year. There were 2 I still have yet to see...a bit late to think they will still visit (Common Buckeye and Black Form tiger Swallowtail...both were here last year).
I just checked the range of this American Snout. It does exist here in it's range, but it's probably not all that common. I will definately look into adding a possible Hackberry bush (not a tree) to our yard. It's their host plant. I don't think there is any of either within 10 miles of here at one of the city's parks near the marsh and along one of the hiking paths if I remember correctly.
Thanks for sharing the great pics! [linked image]

It's nice to see ya'll excited about Snouts happy.gif We're in the middle of a Snout migration - they are flying by in the thousands. So far it hasn't peaked. I remember last year there were so many folks had to pull over to scrape them from radiators because their cars were heating up. (not to mention all the nasty looking windshields!)

They are all over the white brush, lantana and mistflower bushes back at the ranch. They kind of do the Snouth "wave" when you go by - I putter around the back roads in my golf cart and they fly up as I drive by then light back down. Funny to watch happy.gif
