Looks like one of the sphinx hawkmoths from the manduca species - perhaps a Rustic Sphinx (manduca rustica). Did you notice if it had any spots on the abdomen?

I can't say. I never touched the critter, nor did I ever see it move. It was there in the evening, but it was gone by morning. It was a little too menacing for me to get near, which is funny because there are far more truly dangerous things around that don't faze me a bit. Thanks for the inquiry. I hope your id is correct. I don't have any moth resources on hand.
