Spicebush swallowtails overwinter in the chrysalis form, then emerge in spring. The seven I released will find mates (hopefully!) and the females will lay their eggs on sassafras, the eggs will hatch out caterillars which will grow and finally form the chrysalis that will overwinter.
In the northern parts of the country, these particular individuals would have already gone into diapause, that is, overwintered.
