I thought some of you might like to see the nighttime roost of Zebra Longwings here on my property near Homestead, Florida. They aggregate each evening and hang onto small twigs, and one another, to form a colonial nocturnal roost. Pretty cool.
I live in Tampa and didn't know they did this at night! Very cool. Thanks for sharing. Oh, and you're so right about the jungle part. Bobcats, gators, and snakes, oh, my! Never a dull moment. Love it though. 80 degrees today! Can't beat that with a stick.
Roger - That is so cool! Never knew they roosted together! Zebra Longwing Butterflies are the Florida state butterfly! I usually have one or two in my yard, but never very many like in your photos! Awesome shot!
I don't have a photo of a Zebra Longwing roost, but I do have a mating pair living in my yard. I love the graceful dance they do off and on. And they seem to visit flower blooms with each other. I think they are the most graceful flying butterfly I've ever had the privilege to observe and have in my garden. I love all species, but these two are the "waltzing couple"!
Here is a photo of one of them on a Lantana bloom.
