I recently bought a lovely mare from the sales but it turns out she is just to wild to make anything because she has been on the forest for too long.I found out recently that she bred a foal roughly 2, or maybe, 3 years ago.I would love to know how this foal turned out?If anyone has information on this foal or knows the person who owns her, that would be fantastic.Any information is greatly appreciated.

According to NED, she had a dark bay part bred filly in 2007 - Burgate Bramble by Buckland Afterburner (P/B).

I wouldn't give up on Buckland Brass though - she's only a 5 year old and you should be able to get her handled and broken. Get some help if you can't do it yourself - I'd suggest Sarah Weston.

I found her foal, thankyou for your help happy.gif

I'm not giving up on this mare in a hurry! She is so lovely,it just seems she was born wild, having spoken to previous owners. She is Halter broken and is so lovely in the stable, i can do anything with her.Its just in the field, she lets me approach her and she is happy to have cuddles but as soon as you attach a lead rope she just runs! Not sure what to do with her at the moment, just taking it at her speed as she doesnt respond well to being pressured, she goes back about 10steps.

Keep persisting with her!

If she's quiet to handle in the stable, it will eventually come right.

I have a chestnut mare who came 'wild' off the Forest last year, much the same kind of reactions! When I have her 'enclosed' in a small space, I can do almost anything with her, but she can throw the most amazing hissy fits about 'being held' if there's any room that she can break away into.

Do you have a round pen or small schooling area that you could work with her in? Something where you could attach a lunge rein, for example .... but if she ran, she could only run in circles around you because the fences are closer to her than the length of the lunge rein? If you do, try that, and every time she slows down, praise her like mad. If she'll come to you from a call, with gentle pressure on the lunge rein, give her a treat and lots of fuss, etc., until she realises that the lunge rein is just a method of communication.

Try also putting the lead rein on her headcollar when she's in the stable, giving her a treat, then taking it off again. Do this loads! She may learn that lead rein = treat.

Best of luck with her happy.gif

She has actually come on really really well in the last couple of months!Having spoken to previous owners i have drawn the conclusion that she was rarely handled before i bought her so with that in consideration, she now comes to call in the field and is picking up feet and coming in for nice long grooms which she loves happy.gif Its so satisfying knowing you have done it all yourself happy.gif I'm going to be buying wild ponies much more often!

Hi Katie
