Photoshop question

First I should 'fess up that I have not used my Photoshop program yet, but I plan to!

This year I took the ubiquitous picture at the beach where the whole family is in white shirts and khaki pants. Unfortunately, my son wasn't there, so I took a picture of him at home, and I now want to insert him into the picture. He is 6'3" so he will be in the back row.

Now for the photoshop question. Since he is in the back row, should he be the bottom layer, or should the family picture be the bottom layer since it will be mostly unchanged.

That's a bit of a loaded question... It really depends on where he'll be in the picture. Is he going to be next to someone in the back row with no one in front of him? If so, then you can just cut him out of his picture and paste it in the top layer. It's not so much of a layering question, it's really about how you cut him out of the home picture.

I don’t use photoshop but I think all programs work the same and your answer is bottom layer – assuming he will have people in front of him. But to be sure save your original picture and then try it. If it doesn’t work, I think it will, just change the layer. Changing layers is very easy, usually simple drag and drop. You can change it as many times as you like, you can reposition as many times as you like until you save the new picture or combine all objects with background. And please save your new creation under different name

If he's going to have people in front of him, it's not really the bottom layer. The background of the picture would be the bottom layer, he would be between the top layer and bottom layer.

Here are the two photos. This Photoshop is not as easy as I had hoped!

I did print out two 8 x 10's, cut out Travis literally with scissors and then cut a slot to add him to the other photo. Then I made a color copy of the whole thing. Very low tech, but it worked out surprisingly well.

That's a way to do it for sure! It looks like the lighting was pretty consistent in both photos, so that probably made it look pretty good.

Isn't this great! I just wish I had done it by myself.
