Saturday doesn't look good - east winds. They are supposed to be out of the southwest on Sunday, if that happens on Saturday night then there may be birds. The festival used to be held in late September, a much better time for birders. I wonder how crowded it is these days. Back when I used to be a leader it could get pretty busy. No matter what the conditions the day can be fun and you never know what might show up, there is usually something interesting.
The few times I've gone it's been pretty crowded but not too bad. One thing to note is that there are limited vendors this year. The convention center was condemned. So, from what I understand, they will just have a few binocular vendors send up at the hotel.
At the advice of one of you wonderful people, we hit Cape May this fall, but not on the Big Weekend. After Hurricane Gustav came and went, then seeing that Hurricane Ike was heading our way we left SW LA and drove to Cape May. It was really great and and we learned a lot. I especially enjoyed The Nature Conservancy twilight walk. We got to see a Merlin and a Great Horned Owl which were new to us.
It was lots of fun - and an excellent way to spend a hurricane. I've recommended it to all our friends.
I was down Stone Harbor,Cape May and on the way home Avalon. I arrived at 9am Sunday morning and went right to the point in Stone Harbor, then to the Wetlands Intitute on the way back to the Parkway and straight down to
Cape May Point State Park.
I added 8 new birds to my list before leaving Monday afternoon.
I would have liked to have gone on the early morning walk at the Migratory place but didn't wake up in time because of watching the Phillies game.
I'll try to post a thread later.
Congratulations on the Owl;I've never seen one.
