O.T. The Wild Center

A few weeks ago I went to The Wild Center,a new museum about the Adirondack Mountains of New York. It tells of the geology, the animals and birds there now,and the trees and plants. 6,000,000 acres of state owned and privately owned land.

They have a display of live river otters and most recently this little guy was given to them after a dog had injured the animal.

Yup,a young porcupine. The hands you see belong to a museum expert, who gave an interesting talk about porcupines while all the while feeding treats to the animal. The youngster very delicately took the treats from the human hand and daintily ate them. I loved it.

Aren't they cute? We see them on the driveway from time to time, and I had to pull quills from one dog already, but they are still so neat. They are also very loud during the mating season! Great pic.

I'm not sure I want them in my yard, but they are cute. Of course I have been tempted to import a few to girdle and kill the evergreens across the road (on someone elses property) so I can see Lake Champlain again.

Thanks,Sandy. I couldn't resist sharing it. How often can you get that close to a porcupine?

Hi Nancy..Thank you for sharing the adorable photo..

they are awfully cute.. especially when they are not depositing their quills into unsuspecting laboradors and other (ofen)'friendly' dogs.! What a painful experience to have to take out the quills (best left to a vet, usually)
