I am getting a Canon xsi for christmas with a 70 -300 mm lens. I called J&R whom we have used for several purchases for advice on other accessories. I asked about using an extender or teleconverter, and they recommended one. Then I called Canon and repeated the question to see if I got the same answer. I ended up talking to Tech support for lenses, and he said that I couldn't use an extender or teleconverter with that lens. He said the only lens you could use them on were the white barreled lenses.

Does this sound right to you????

Well, I would think that there is a converter for every lens out there. However, the only way to even start looking is to have exact information on the lens, make and model, and the same info on the converter. Do you have this onfo?

Has anyone tried the Tamron lens 28 - 300mm? Someone recommended it.

I purchased a Canon 1.4 extender to use with my Canon 400mm lens but the auto focus feature is disabled.

I have a Canon Rebel XTi and also called Canon about the teleconverter. They told me I couldn't use the Canon 1.4 so I bought a Tamron teleconverter. I also bought the Canon 300mm 4L prime lens that Martin mentioned. Since I bought the lens at a later date I made sure they all "worked" in the store before I made my purchase.
