I thought female kestrels were usually much paler in coloring? Are there different regional variations?

That's a real nice closeup shot James!

We saw our first Kestrel ever yesterday... in a neighbor's treetop 150ft away!
Suffice to say... we appreciate your photo. wink.gif

Thanks all

I always consider it an honor when birds share the same physical space with me. For some reason, the normally shy kestrel paid me no attention. As for her coloration, this is a lightly colored one...some that live nearby are much darker.

Regards,

James

Nice photo! I have a male Kestrel that terrorizes the birds in my yard when it gets really cold and snowy..other than that, I never see them in my yard. The other day I had a magpie in the yard that found a House Sparrow that must have given into disease or the cold. It picked at it awhile then left it in the snow. I was going to go out and pick it up and put it in the trash but got busy doing things in the house. About 2 hours later, the birds scattered in the yard and I looked out to see the male Kestrel on the fence eyeing the dead house sparrow. It dropped down to the sparrow and gave it a few pecks then lifted off with it to my neighbors roof and had breakfast. I didn't know kestrels would scavange, but I guess hard times with hard packed snow make critters do what they can to survive.
