ID LBJ?

Hi all! I know I haven't been active here much lately. I've been busy with work and holidays. But the birds have been great! We have Common Redpolls and Pine Siskins again this year. I think that means we are colder than usual! LOL!

Anyway, I have a pic of a LBJ who was at the feeder this morning. I am almost certain this is a Field Sparrow...which would be a lifer for me! He was a very agressive bird...like he hadn't seen food in ages. I am happy to oblige him....it's what the feeders are out and continually filled for.

Here's the LBJ...

edit: I tried to make this a clickable thumbnail but I think I may have read somewhere in the past several weeks that this option isn't available on PB anymore. I will resize and add the pic to the post in a few minutes.

Hopefully this is sized okay:

Kristy, a Field Sparrow in your neck of the woods at this time of year would be quite a find - but much more likely would be an American Tree Sparrow which is very, very similar. Were you able to get a look at the breast? The Tree Sparrow has a dark mark in the center. AMTS also have grayer heads than Field Sparrows and typically have a bicolored bill (can't tell if your bird does or not).

I am guessing that this is an AMTS, but if you can get a photo of the bird's chest and there's no dark spot there, you might want to run this by your local birding groups - it definitely would be an out-of-season find if it's a Field Sparrow.

Thanks, Jill. I thought it was an American Tree Sparrow too but I didn't see a spot on the breast. I'm sure the bird will be back and I'll try to get a better look! :::going back to browse through all the pics:::

And now that I think about it (though I can't really tell from the pics)...I believe the bill was almost two-toned like the Tree Sparrow. I'm going to bank on that being the ID. But I'll keep a lookout just in case.

Thanks again!

Sure looks like an American Tree Sparrow to me. I think you can barely see the two toned beak.
