My wife and I were house hunting in Southwest Florida a couple of weeks ago and I had a chance to spend about 30 minutes at the Venice Rookery and an hour at Ding Darling. Both are amazing places for bird photography.

We bought a house in Cape Coral

March 16 2009, 2:55 AM

Ruth,

We close on our house in Cape Coral, April 2nd, and will probably move down there about the middle of April. We have lived in Florida in the mid ninties and I grew up in Tampa, so we aren't going to be surprised by anything. Our house is about 25 miles from Ding Darling, 60 miles from the Venice rookery, and 55 miles from Corkscrew Swamp. The new house is on the water (fresh water)and I expect to see quite a bit from our own dock. I know places in Florida where you can stand in one spot and photograph more birds in an hour than you would see all day in most parts of the country. I am really looking forward to it.
