Great Cormorant

Not an everyday sighting in our state(nj).
There were two on Sandy Hook this past weekend

Very nice! They are more common up here in Maine, but I usually see them winging by or at a great distance. What a great look at that distinctive white patch.

Actually, on the Delaware River between Philadelphia and Trenton they are the common cormorant during the colder months. They seem to be localized, further down the Delaware River they are difficult to find. The white on the head is highly variable, some of them have a marked bridled look. They can remain on their wintering grounds quite late, we used to get them most years on the World Series of Bird in the first part of May.
