Question about Pine Siskins...

Hello Folks,

We have a regular Pine Siskin that seems to have possibly taken up residence here. It comes to our thistle feeders with our house and Goldfinches. From what little I've read about them, they are supposed to be way up in the northern fringes of the US and up through near the artic circle now. They don't breed here in Nebraska. I can't imagine that this one here is still going to migrate further now. I also read that they are somewhat nomatic too.
Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Pine Siskins this year are actually breeding in a lot of places they aren't "supposed" to, including my house here in Maine (admittedly, I'm a lot closer to their normal range). This was a heck of a dispersal year for them, and many seem to have stayed put where they ranged. So don't be surprised if there are actually two...

Pine Siskins move around with the food supply and breed at any time of year, they nested here this spring and most have moved on but there are still some around, we go from hundreds and hundreds to one year with none, I always get asked by passerby's when working in the front yard what birds are making all that noise since they can be very noise in quantity.

It's wonderful to see a new variety once in awhile visiting our yard.

After being so happy to have pine siskins during the winter for the first time ever in my yard in a suburb of Buffalo NY, I was especially surprised that a couple of them are still around. I don't get tired of my usual birds but you are right, it is nice to see new ones. Although I've always had house finches, I was excited to see a pair of purple finches for the first time ever this weekend too, three days in a row.

I'm always amazed what I see here in the middle of a suburban housing tract.

Add me to the list of people seeing Siskins in late spring! They are usually long gone by this time of year!
