Bluebird just out of the nest

Usually the earliest we see bluebirds outside the nest box is a week to 10 days after they fledge. By that time their tail feathers have grown considerably.

When mine fledged last week, this one flew up on the deck and stayed there for some time, and I was able to get some close up pictures.

So here you see a male eastern bluebird, just a few minutes out of the nest. As you can see, his tail feathers have some growing to do.

Thanks so much for posting these Dave! I've never seen a fledgling like that with the tail feathers so short! You are so lucky.

What great pics. I have only seen one bluebird in my life and that was two years ago and I have never seen one so young even thought the Bluebird is the NY state bird.
