Well, it sounded like a good idea....

I'm on Fall Break until tomorrow, and typically I do a lot of Christmas shopping during this holiday. I just love a project, so I decided my 2 ft square platform feeder from WBU that is threaded through a post needed a roof. Sounds easy, doesn't it???? I decided to build a frame a little smaller than the feeder, add 4 legs, and put plexigas on top of the frame. What a job this turned into. I looked like the Three Stooges meet Dumb, Dumber and Dumbest. Normally, I am pretty handy, but not today. It is up, but it's not pretty. I would send a picture, but my camera is at the Canon Factory being repaired.

Gayla,
I laughed when I read this post. Last weekend I made what I thought would be a squirrel proof feeder for my deck. I made a temporary one last year and no squirrels got in all winter. I used these storage cubicle grids made for dorm rooms from Bed, bath and beyond:

I made a cube and a roof and put a small platform feeder inside. I was so proud of it as I attached it to the deck railing and watched the first chickadee go in.

Next day, I came home from school and there was this skinny squrrel inside, as happy as could be.

I think dumbest would describe me best.

I really like your solution to squirrels on ground platform feeders. I will have to try it. My platform feeder is huge and is on a pole about 5 ft off the ground with a baffle, so squirrels are no problem.

I may need to get some stencils for the plexiglas roof because it is clear as glass. I certainly don't want to harm the birds.

I like the idea of a clear plexiglass roof. Maybe you could put a few stickers on the underside?

Gayla,

Most of the squirrels have checked out my new homemade feeder but only this skinny one got in. When I went out on the deck it had some trouble getting out and hasn't been around too often. Maybe the seeds it ate put it over the size limit?

The spaces in the grid are 1 1/2" squares.
So I really know what you mean when you say it sounded like a good idea!
