you are an idiot! what do you mean "i need tips to care for my black babies' hair." okay, sorry. first tip, do not, under any circumstances, put chemicals in your childs' hair. let it make that decician when she/he is old enough. use a good moisterizing shampoo(safe for baby hair). if this is not your first child, you may notice that baby hair rub off easliy in certain areas. try keeping a hat on its head. you might try loose braids if its hair is log enough. treat your baby's hair very gentle. also, you might discover that your baby's hair frizzes a lot. dont worry about this: if hair is frizzy, than its frizzy. dont blow your head off trying to find a product that will calm the frizz. last, enjoy your beutiful baby and dont try to change its hair!
Hi French,
I am a mixed race woman(my father is White, my mother is Black).
First of all your child is not "Black", your child is biracial and has bi-racial hair which is different than Black hair.
I wear my hair very short now, but when I was younger and wore it longer I did use various hair products, although it has been 14 years since I had long hair(I have worn my hair very short since I was 15, I'm 29 now).
My best advice is to talk to a hair stylist at a good beauty salon who would know what the best products are for mixed race hair on the market nowadays. Also there is different types of mixed race hair. Some mixed race people have somewhat "Black hair", others have fairly "Caucasion hair" and still others, like myself somewhere in the middle. Just as complexions vary, so does hair.
It doesn't really matter what the child is mixed with. But whatever you do, avoid perming (relaxing) and putting any harmful chemicals in the childs hair until they are teens. Actually i dont even recommend perming as a teen. Teach them about natural hair care. Many mixed children's hair gets brittle after perming. But their hair can be beautiful naturally. Be gentle.
Be very gentle. I know that the subject of what to do with a very fragile head is scary, but just go with the basics. Such as johnson and johnson's shampoo with j and j lotion as a moisterizer. That goes for both mixed and black babies depending upon the softness, thickness, curliness of the har ( the lotion)
Hey I don't know why that "hairmaster" person is flippin out. That is a good thing that you are trying to find out some tips in maintaing your child's hair. I know a lot of white women who's children have hair unlike theirs, who don't know what to do and their kids always look a mess! Therefore, you really don't have to worry about her hair when she is a baby, but as for toddler ages, braids isn't a bad exception. It doesn't require too much time, and it's healthy. And when you child get's older, you prob. don't want to give her a relaxer because her hair will already be beautiful. Also, taking her to a black hair stylist when the time comes isn't a bad choice either. Good luck and I hope I helped you!
Hi,
I just wanted to commend you for seeking hair advice. Although most of the info you have received is good, to be frank you will really have to wait until your baby is born to assess what type of hair your child will have, just like any other parent. And too, as you probably already know by now, your child's hair will probably shed some and it may change as the new hair grows in. I would ask some of your baby's father's relatives for ideas as well. Just be gentle and moisturize. Babies hair do not really need alot of manipulation until they're older. I have an 18 month old and although her father and I have coarse african american hair, her hair is very fine, straight with a slight curl pattern. This just goes to show that you never know what you'll have until you have it. Try this website for bi-racial hair tips. Hope this help!!
